Zach Gentry

but necessary because Gentry was such a zero. Gentry is the type of pick you make when you are all set with 2 good TEs so you roll the dice on a project to develop as a 3rd TE. The problem is that Vance’s long injury history made him far from reliable and Grimble isn’t very good. The steelers seemed to love Grimble for some unknown reason. Their misjudgement of the TE situation cost them a 5th round pick.

Necessary? Really? So you think we go 7-9 without him? Maybe they would have been next to last in offense without him?.. oh wait.

Fact is he did next to nothing. They could have played an extra tackle and been just as effective or more effective.

He has an almost guaranteed spot given the lack of depth and him being a developmental player

He has a training camp shot that is the only guarantee. Because of his lack of reps and how raw he is...it isn't even an almost. He will have to be either a better blocker or receiver or he won't be on the final 53.

A lot of rookies have a tendency to put MUSCLE weight on over their first off season. I'm hoping GENTRY is one of those type of guys. Is he the answer,....NO not at last year's skill level. If he worked hard and added stregnth, then he does have a better chance of success. Training Camp will answer that question.

Seems like another reach to me. Tested very poorly at the combine, though I guess he improved his 40 time to a respectable level at his pro day. At least as a prospect he seems to be a better fit than the Rugby player who is huge and strong but would lose a footrace to most interior olinemen.

They did play Banner at TE quite a bit in run situations. That was fine for run situations, but without Vannett, you have to tear out all 2 TE formations from the pass game. And with backup QBs they needed the extra protection, especially since the RBs are not good at blitz pickup.

The mistake was not drafting a TE that could play as a rookie or signing a vet for depth. Once Grimble was gone, getting a TE was necessary. Jesse James needed work as a rookie but he was able to play. Gentry wasn't. He is lanky and weak and can't block at all. I think they hoped Gentry would be able to play as a rookie but my guess is they saw that he was a bigger project than they'd hoped. They had to get a #2 TE.

With Gentry not ready to contribute they essentially had just 1 TE on the roster. Are you suggesting they should have just not had any sort of backup?

Again, the mistake was the faith in Grimble and not addressing TE earlier. But once they were down to just Vance and Gentry, they had no choice.

In USING Banner as a blocking TE on run plays is what tipped off the "D" on stacking the box. Randy was to stuborn or dumb to realize that he was showing plays by the Personel he was sending out onto the field. MAYBE he didn't have any choice but still you have to camaflodge somehow.

Do you sacrifice a level of the "D" to improve the "O"......... That is the true QUESTION.
