I expected more. Maybe I shouldn't have, as he was a 5th round pick. I just don't understand how you can be drafted and have the size needed to play, and barely see the light of day your first year.

He was a QB when he went to Michigan, then switched to Tight End.

So he's a smart guy, Has the size at 6'8", 269.

He catches ok.

I guess the problem is blocking? I mean it was so bad we went and traded for Vannet who was on the last year of his contract. The guy is/can go where he wants.

Did they just take a flyer to see if he sticks ? As a project?

Or was it a pretty big Whiff?

They needed to address the position at the end of camp unless they thought Gentry was ready. They taped it together and hoped. and then they picked up Vannett in a ridiculous trade. Brutal. If anyone thinks they couldn't have a VANNETT on the street for what they got from him, they are joking.

Eh, he transitioned from QB to TE so not much experience at the position. His testing wasn't too impressive heading into the draft and just about everyone had him listed as an UDFA. I'm impressed he made the roster.

Let's see if he shows improvement in camp.

Low round draft pick. I wouldn't have expected much more in his rookie year. Next year will tell you more as to whether he has a future. Hell if Grimble wouldn't have gone on IR and if McDonald wasn't made of glass, he wouldn't have seen the field at all.

5th round picks aren't whiffs or busts. They are typically projects at best. No one expected anything from Gentry this year. Getting him on the field and doing anything was a hope and a prayer they found a diamond in the rough.

Yeah, that may be the way some see it. Maybe at certain positions. But there are many players taken late,, and even not drafted who come in and contribute. I just expect to see / hear SOMETHING. From a pick. Especially as thin as we are/ were.

I thought Gentry was a reach in the 5th. If he can somehow end up being #2 TE and red zone threat I’d be happy.

I think they are stuck paying McDonald at this point. They could resign Vannett and maybe bring a veteran in while using a high pick on one.

Vannett is fine, as was McDonald when healthy ... this team decided at some point that Te wasn’t a position they were going to utilize down the field... for all intensive purposes, the Te was just a small OT 95% of the time... This kid was a pass catcher... he served no useful purpose in the abortion that was our offensive scheme this year...

Again with young QBs 99% of teams utilize the Te position more in their offensive gameplan... we just ignored them downfield all year long... they blocked or were decoys.. waste of a position...

He played a little but I don't think it was a very good pick anyhow. Not sure if he has much of a ceiling but we can hope. Next year will tell the tale.

was good in the red zone for big blue but all scouts websites had him 6th- udfa maybe they could of waited but maybe Colbert felt theirs upside worth using with the 5th rounder

He wasn't going to do much once Ben got hurt, we started using a ton of Banner as an extra OT, so that lessened the use of the TE, and Rudolph and Duck don't use the TE like Ben would anyways. He's a project, he was a project when drafted.

I'm dropping McDonald and bringing Vannett back. Gentry is a project and until he shows otherwise that's all he is.

James Harrison got his first sack at age 26. Unless your a 1st or 2nd round pick I don't expect much from rookies in their first year.

with so few complete TEs in college, just about any pick is a developmental pick, but I don't know what they saw in Gentry. I think he's too tall. I know James is 6'7 but Jesse was thicker and much stronger. Gentry needs to transform himself in the weight room if he's going to be a blocker.

Gentry will be lucky to get out of training camp. A make it or break it preseason for him.

wait, is he a project? Or is he Doomed in camp. Cant have both in Jan after the rookie season, especially if he didnt play much "Because he isnt a 1st or 2nd rounder."

I just dont get the draft strategy.

Its like buying a new shirt at Pennies, then taking it to goodwill with the tags on, because it just wasnt your color or Fit. You bought it, you wanted that color, you tried it on surely, (watched film and did homework).
Then you go on poshmark and buy a used one for more money. (free agency)

I agree that Gentry was a project when we drafted him. He will have a whole season and a full off-season to get up to snuff in training and learning how to block. This coming season, he has to show something on the field. Or it was truly a wasted pick.

The plan had to be for him to be a factor this coming season.

Why would you bring back Vannett? He did nothing this year. His blocking wasn't even great towards the end of the year. Waste of a 5th round pick.

I am really leaning toward our coaches are dimwitted. I mean, the dude is tall as ****, and I'm sure he'd have caught more than gimpy Vance, why the hell not toss him out there. Nothing like a huge target staring a deer in the headlights qb in the face when he's about to get killed to bail him out. I just don't get it. I guess we will see.

should oif been dressing as soon as they found out Grimble was done could of helped not trade for vanett he for mason and duck could easily been a securitry blanket at 6"7 have vance in line and gentry up the seam could of operned things up but Fitcxher is a ***.

Gentry is tall and weak, would've gotten his *** handed to him, doesn't know the playbook, weakness is blocking, Ben got hurt so they used alot more Banner.

but necessary because Gentry was such a zero. Gentry is the type of pick you make when you are all set with 2 good TEs so you roll the dice on a project to develop as a 3rd TE. The problem is that Vance’s long injury history made him far from reliable and Grimble isn’t very good. The steelers seemed to love Grimble for some unknown reason. Their misjudgement of the TE situation cost them a 5th round pick.
