Your Midterm Grades

Colbert nailed the first two picks for 2014, but the free agency wasn't very good. Cam Thomas started ( YUCK ) Lance Moore was also brought in. The Steelers singed Mike Mitchell, and I think we could have done better.

And i will play along what Safety would you have taken in free agency in 2014?

That draft also brought us Martavis Bryant.

Despite what everyone may think of him personally, the guy has pulled in 15 TD's since he's been here.

Offense: B- Too many turnovers, dropped passes and field goals. Red Zone offense must improve. Ben hasn't been as good as he usually is, and Bell isn't the same world beater he was in 2016.

Defense: A. This is the best pass rush and coverage we have had for years. The coverage for once includes two quality cornerbacks, and our underneath coverage in the zone with Watt and Shazier allows for unpredictability on defense.

Special Teams B+ Boswell and the kick coverage teams have been excellent. The return game is average, and the punting below average.

Coaching C. Poor strategy, use of timeouts, not dressing or playing the right players, and internal issues have contributed to both losses.

GM A+ Hats off for Colbert, who drafted two excellent rookies ( Watt and Ju-Ju ) and had his best free agency ever. Haden, Wilcox, Alualu, and Hilton have all added to the defense.

Bell didn't start off great, but he is currently the same stud he was last year.
Ben has been a C+ player for the offense.

What do you mean by not dressing the right players? Where was this an issue?

I would be surprised if our needs changed in the off-season in regards to the draft.

Regardless of season outcome...

I see us needing a

FS
WR
ILBer
TE
QB

Not necessarily in that order, but would love to see Mitchell upgraded...

Pretty much.
Although I would say that McDonald may be given another full year to prove his worth as a true #1 TE.
Unfortunately, I'm seeing next to nothing at a real position of need - FS.

He means Harrison not playing

I would also like to give the Browns an A for allowing us to sign the best corner we have had in forever!

Offense : C- ; I would give it a solid B if we didn't have the best RB & WR along with a great OL. So with this amount of talent there is no excuse for not having a top 3 offense. And I don't care if they're #4 in total yards. Points are what counts, and they're #14 in that.

And it's time for people to stop blaming Haley. Yes, he's partially to blame - but the real blame needs to go towards Ben. He's so unreliable that a 3rd and long play call is usually a short pass over the middle to Brown, hoping he'll be able to break two tackles to get the 1st down.

Defense
: B ; The numbers are good, and they would more than likely be even better if Tuitt wasn't out. But just like Stafford displayed the other day, a top tier QB can tear this zone D apart. I don't see Brady having too much difficulty with it.

Coaching : C+ ; Clock management and play calling has been pathetic at times. I believe it was the Chicago game in which they got the ball at mid-field with approx 1min left in the first half and only managed to run 2 plays before downing the ball to end the half. Pathetic. Every single season Tomlin amazes me at the plays he decides to challenge which will obviously not be overturn. And of course Tomlin still doesn't know how to beat crap teams. I have a feeling he doesn't know how to get the team properly pumped up for those games.

I agree, absolutely.

However....

The fact is this team is lucky to be 6-2.

They've got the easiest schedule possible for the 2nd half. GB is a different team w/out Rodgers. NE & Tenn are the only true playoff caliber teams left in the schedule. There is no way they should have a record less than 12-4 at the end of the season. But we all know how that goes. They'll probably have their ***** handed to them by Cleveland or Indy. Thank god we don't play SF.

Questions for the 2nd half :

- When does JuJu begin returning punts ?
- Will they attempt to beat NE with that zone D ?
- When's Tuitt coming back ?

Have you ever posted under a different user name?

Anyways we have no idea if they plan on playing zone against the cheats.

And until Haley fine tunes this O, he gets the fair share of the blame. He is responsible for play calling getting the most out of the players he has. Including the red zone woes.

Tuitt will be back after the bye, I actually think all the walking wounded will be back by then.

I am ok wth Juju returning punts. But the coaches have to be ok with what they see in practice, perhaps they aren't at that point.

nope, promise.

Been on other boards here and there. They all died out for whatever reason. I stumbled into here. Looks like there's a good amount of activity, so I'm checking it out.

Welcome enjoy

Offense D --- Still has not scored 30 points and probably cost us both games we lost, terrible in redzone, too much talent to suck
Defense B+ --- Much better than expected, run D is a bit suspect still, gave up a ton of yards to Stafford, but held on in red zone
Special Teams B+ --- Making Boswell a hall of famer this year. Punting not so hot, but coverage has not been horrible.
Coaching C- --- Beat KC in KC, lost to Bears and Jags, like a yo-yo. Haley / Tomlin need to step up the offense, defense needs to counter other teams strengths better. When a QB throws for over 400 yards and we do the same thing over and over it is concerning for whats down the road.....

The first full season with Ben,Brown,Bryant, and Bell all playing at the same time. So going into the season I was saying this offense should be able to put up 30pts a game.

Well, like you said, they haven't done it once.

Defense B+ --- ....run D is a bit suspect still

I'm thinking (hoping) Tuitt will make a big difference when he returns.

Sure, he deserves some of the blame. No doubt. But he only deserves SOME of the blame. I am mostly pointing at Ben these these days. His accuracy looks like complete crap. Just bad passes, no other way to say it.

And Ugs, at the end of the half against the Bears, clock management wasn't a problem. We were lining up to kick a FG as time expired, it was blocked and nearly returned for a TD.

I'm always fine with AB returning punts. He's basically fair catching each punt now, and possession is more important than gaining yardage on PRs. Though JuJu doesn't return punts yet, we have a player who was just activated from IR who can, Sutton. It will be interesting to see if he's worked in to do it in the second half of the season.

I'm just thinking of it as a way to keep AB injury-free.

But I hearya.
Yeah, I understand there.

My thing is AB isn't dumb. He's very conservative with his returns. He usually just ducks to the sidelines anyway. He's smart enough to avoid any big hits. Hopefully anyway.

And what about all the issues we have had in the past in the RZ area? This isn't anything new.

6-2 could have one at least one of the lost games. Biggest down grade need to score TD'S inside the ten yard especially. Defense Burns needs to tackle much better and be aggressive on the receiver once ball caught, stands flat footed and usually gives up extra yards.
