Dallas Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy has been suspended 10 games without pay for "conduct detrimental to the league," the NFL said in a statement.

Hardy's suspension is the result of a two-month NFL investigation following the dismissal of his domestic violence case.

A source told ESPN's Jane McManus that the NFLPA plans to appeal the league's ruling.

Hardy's court case ended with all charges being dropped after the victim, Hardy's former girlfriend, chose not to cooperate with North Carolina authorities.

"The NFL's investigation concluded that Hardy violated the Personal Conduct Policy by using physical force against Nicole Holder in at least four instances," the league said in its statement, and also noted Hardy's suspension would be "appropriate under any version of the Personal Conduct Policy or its predecessors."

The NFL was in possession of photos taken by police of the incident. A judge initially found Hardy guilty but he asked for a jury trial and the result was set aside. This week Hardy has asked that his record be expunged.

Previously with the Carolina Panthers, Hardy was placed on the inactive list before the second game this past season and the commissioner's exempt list before the third game until his domestic violence case was resolved. Hardy's contract with the Panthers expired following the 2014-15 season, but the Panthers made no effort to re-sign the talented pass-rusher.

Hardy joined Dallas this offseason on a one-year deal worth up to $13 million. The Cowboys structured Hardy's contract in such a way that he would earn most of his money through per-game roster bonuses, knowing he could miss games once the NFL made a ruling.

Hardy will be eligible to return to the Cowboys following the team's Week 10 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, Nov. 15.
 
Goodell strikes again. I wonder if he used the pull a number out of a hat method or throw a dart at a dart board method... the world probably will never know!
 
This essentially makes his suspension 26 games, since he didn't play last year. I know its trendy now to go with mob justice over following rules but Hardy is legally innocent.

I know there is evidence he did something wrong, but this is a bad path for the NFL. What happens when the next player has charges dropped and Goodell puts his finger in the air, gauges the wind and says 4 game suspension. Kind of like he did with Ben.

The NFLPA better make this a priority in the next contract. They are crazy if they agree to another deal which gives Goodell the power to punish players, not by set rules, but by something closer to how angry Twitter is about the incident.

I hate Rog as much as anyone and do also think 10 games is excessive. .but the dude got paid all last year not the same as a 25 game suspension. .he did play 1 game last year. The NFL cited 4 instance of some type of abuse toward his GF plus an array of assault rifles plus the fact they say he was not forth coming when asked about things I think a 6 game suspension is probably about right..i'm sure they are just leaving some wiggle room for the appeal. .which has been filed by Rosenhaus. .he was found guilty by a judge then when he wanted a jury trial his GF suddenly clamed up sounds to me like someone got a little extra from someone...after the Rice fiasco they are going to look at everything
 
So, if he was actually charged and found guilty, would it then be a lifetime ban? This is beyond ridiculous. Goddell needs to go.
 
The punishmen t seems excessive. But I don't know all the inside facts either. Not defensing the fluck-stick "rog" at all. Appeal will lower it some. If you boys haven't realized it by now, the NFL is never ever going to be like it was.............

Well since they are suspending him for actual crimes that he was already found guilty of and the woman in question may have become an enabler for monetary compensation sounds like it might actually have some basis. In her case I could understand her position, if she comes forward and he goes to jail his career is over and there is likely no settlement or other compensation awarded her by the court. If on the other hand she refuses to testify he keeps his job she can be done with him and get some compensation for her suffering. This new policy really screws over the people it professes to protect and is full of unintended consequences.
Typical knee jerk media fueled idiocy, It would be much better to have a policy that kept him working and provided a safe haven for the abused parties and monetary compensation for them, but that would take a bit too much thought for the idiots that only care about appearances and not substance.
 
Mike golic had a rant on this,....more or less supporting RG. After hearing it I agree now. I never heard the detail of what he did. Dude ****** her up. Yes he sat last year but got 14 mill to do so.

Good for you, but the "rog" knows a hell of a lot more details than you or I ever will know. I can't stand the "rog", so don't think i'm defending him one bit. It seems excessive to me, but as said, appeal will probably lower it.

Rog saw the pictures. Unless they're leaked we will never know how bad it was. The prosecution was hamstrung by the lack of cooperation of the victim but the NFL isn't. In this case where I think he should be in jail, there's nothing the NFL can do that I will think is too much.

Greg Hardy managed to avoid any criminal penalties in connection with the domestic violence accusations leveled against him last year. But the NFL’s own investigation concluded that Hardy did commit an act of investigation and was dishonest when asked directly about it.

Jeff Pash, the NFL’s executive vice president and general counsel, said on Outside the Lines that the NFL (which was burned by the Ray Rice case) will no longer rely on the legal system. Instead, the NFL conducts its own investigations, and Pash said the league’s investigation found that Hardy committed “a significant act of violence.”

“This suspension was imposed after a lengthy and detailed independent investigation of the kind we really hadn’t done before,” Pash said. “We did an independent investigation, we didn’t rely simply on the record here.”

Pash also said Hardy and his representatives were given ample opportunity to give his side of the story, and that the NFL found Hardy had engaged in “a failure to be candid in the context of the investigation.”

“His explanations of the events that happened last May simply could not be reconciled with the testimony of other witnesses, with other objective evidence, or with, frankly, some of the variations in testimony over time from Mr. Hardy,” Pash said.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made the final call on the decision to suspend Hardy without pay for the first 10 games of the 2015 season. That’s a decision that Hardy will appeal, but that the NFL insists was made after the kind of thorough investigation that wasn’t conducted with Ray Rice.

Sounds like that's the policy.

After the Ray Rice situation they are not going to use the conclusion of the justice system to determine their punishment. These guys too easily buy the lawyers to get them off with a hand slap or they pay off their accusers and contaminate the testimony.

The NFL I guess has decided to ignore what deals District Attorneys decide to shake on and instead do their own investigations, try to track down all the same evidence the DA's have, do their own interviews and decide their own course of action.

After the flack the NFL got over Ray Rice (when in reality it was a failure of THAT District Attorney in Atlantic City and the criminal justice system), how can they NOT go the other way?

The league is establishing that suspended WITH PAY is NOT punishment. So everything that happened to Hardy last season is irrelevant to the NFL. They don't consider that part of this decision. The new rules say domestic abuse STARTS at a minimum 6 games. They found evidence that disturbed them enough to make it 10 games.

That's their position.

I can be ok with that, if they define punishment for actions and not just roll the wheel of fortune to decide it.

When it was first announced, the NFL stated that the new policy was a minimum of 6 games for DV. However extenuating circumstances could mean increasing the punishment.

Too lazy to look it up, but wasn't Hardy the one who, in the course of the incident, pushed the lady onto a pile of handguns and assault rifles? I'd consider that somewhat of an extenuating circumstance; having guns like that just laying around. And possibly using them as an intimidation tactic.

Also, they basically say he lied to investigators and was found out when his stories didn't match up to previous statements he'd made, statements from other witnesses, etc.

Someone was going to get the hammer under this new policy to show the media and possibly the players that they are not playing (or at least to give the appearance of such).
 
The argument against the NFL (from the players' perspective) is:

1. Being suspended with pay is still being punished. The NFL can now kind of hind behind the "suspend with pay" directive while their investigation can take as long as they want. It is curious the owners want this since they are in essence willing to pay (for nothing on the field) to have a media storm go away while they do an investigation and see which way the public opinion wind is blowing.

2. Hardy's incident occurred before the NFL's decision to make domestic violence incidents a minimum 6 game suspension.
 
If you hit a woman and she doesn't have a weapon or gun, there is no excuse to hit her. Especially if you weigh twice as much. He's lucky not to be in jail and deserves to be punished as fully as the NFL can, period.
 
I dont know what the details of the policy, but right now it seems it is basically do whatever you want. I am surprised they have not been hammered legally yet. If the NFL were to go strictly by the legal system then guys like OJ could be playing in the league. Its a touchy slope. You want to punish guys you know did wrong, but maybe got off on a technicality or something, but then you are playing judge
