I believe we are in position for a super bowl run, but only if the defense can be quickly fixed.

Would you take this draft?

1 ) CB Jackson III
2A ) DL Butler *** Acquired via trade ***
2B ) OLB/DL Nassib
3 ) FS Carson Houston
4 ) QB Hogan
6 ) BPA OL
6 ) BPA P
7 ) BPA KR/WR

*** Butler acquired via trade. Steelers give up their first pick in 2017. ***


This draft would give us the following.

1 ) A cover corner with length, speed and playmaking ability

2 ) A big time pass rusher, who also plays the run well and can be deployed at OLB or on a 4 man rush in the 4-3, nickel, or Dime

3 ) A Nost Tackle who can make plays vs the run or pass, and can stay on the field in a 4-3, nickel, or Dime formation.

4 ) A Better backup QB. Let's face it, Jones, if he has to play, is terrible and Ben isn't playing a 16 game season with his age and playing style

5 ) An upside prospect at a position of need at safety.


^^^^ All of the above five picks address a major area of weakness and are reasons why we can't get back to another super bowl.


While giving up a first round pick is a lot, rookies take 2-3 years to develop. By that time, the window might be closing or closed. So in a deep draft with players who have 1st round grades available in round two at positions we need, it makes sense.

how do you know that next year you won't have a bigger need?
 
No. I don't give up a 1st rounder next year and gain very little in return. And, I do not take a QB. Wasted pick.
 
Like the majority, no.

Don't give up 1st rounder next year. Maybe trade back a few spots to acquire additional 3rd, but don't trade away future 1st rounders.

No QB in first 4 rounds. We need CB, S, DL and either pass rusher, another DL or OL with the 4th pick.
 
I see a team that will have needs at OLB, MLB and also the secondary in 2017. I'm not giving up any first round pick anytime soon.

If I wouldn't have stopped drinking back in February (health reasons) I'd go straight to a bar now...

If you think we have a 2-3 year window to win now, why not give up a 1st round pick if you have a 1st round grade on a guy at a position of need? This is the deepest DL draft I have seen in years.

That's all I'm saying. Fix our weaknesses now. Most here think we'll be 10-6 to 12-4 next season, picking past the 25th pick. It's not like we are going to give up a high round one pick in the draft, and the grade of the DL player this year we could get say at pick 40, might be as good as the value we can get at DL in pick #27 next year.

Our punter sucks. He's like 30th ranked in the NFL and does not do well in pressure punts. I'll take an upgrade with a 6th round pick any day.

Might I suggest you get a Berry drink.
 
Are you crazy? Giving up a future 1st rounder for a late 1st playwr?

While Berry isn't the greatest punter ever you are only looking at one stat I would guess Coach, ranking him by net yardage right?

Part of Berry's low net is due to Tomlin's field position coaching style where he brings out the punting crew where many coaches would attempt the long field goal. Almost half his punts were not returned, one of the better averages in the NFL and using hang time to mask a poor coverage unit. He also had an excellent inside the 20 ratio vs times punted, again a product of Tomlin's field position approach. You'll notice generally the punters with the very good net average are on teams that go 3 and out a lot and have a whole field to boom there punts into rather than a half field to to to place it inside the 10 as the situation Berry was in. I'm not suggesting he is the best punter however using the net average as the sole judging when he frequently did exactly what he was called on to is a bit misleading.

I'm all for bringing in some competitors for the job, just bring in a couple UDFAs to compete rather than wasting another pick at a non need position.
 
the only good pick is WJIII the rest is BS...and no way I give up next years first round pick

Nope. Hate the idea of giving up a future first.

I'm ok with the first two picks, but that is higher than I'd want to take Nassib and the QB and punter are wasted picks.
 
NO to trading away the future.
NO to drafting a QB before round 6.
NO to drafting a punter, period.
 
Berry is one of the best at pinning inside the 20. He's a rookie. He banged some 70yarders. I'm willing to give him time to grow.

I don't think I'd take it. That 1st could become a 10th pick if **** hits the fan

You nailed the first part. In Football, the worse your defense is, the more you need a better punter. This is a very good draft for punters.

Berry is 30th on average, and 27th on net. But there isn't a stat for when a big punt is needed, and he tends to shrink in these moments.

GIve me a guy with a better leg, and better hang time. You can find that in the draft in rounds 6 or 7.
