With all the recent signings what is our approach in the upcoming draft

I love reading these threads and need to get more up to speed on the draft this year. Usually by now I’d have a pretty good idea of the top 10-15 guys at critical positions of need for us. Not this year...so I’m lagging behind.

The one thing I have learned over the years is not to get attached to any specific player, in thinking or hoping the Steelers will draft them. Just too many unknowns and intangibles involved with how the draft shakes out, once the picks start rolling in. Couple of examples, the year we drafted DeCastro...no friggin way anyone thought he would still be on the board. Same with this trade up for Bush, or the risky picks of Dupree or Terrell Edmunds. Or who could have predicted Dionte Johnson would be the WR they go after last year, or how good he’s turning out to be?

So I tend to sit back and let the process play out, as opposed to being lulled into believing I have a grip on how they’ve ranked the prospects. I’ve found the draft to be more enjoyable this way, as I’m no longer gnashing my teeth when they leave a bunch of dudes on the board and seem to pull a name out of a hat when they announce their pick. ;)

I found that last years draft was way easier to fill out the mid to later rounds when selecting. Picking even the first and second this year is tougher.

I think I read that Robbie wants north of 10 million per and we’re not going to do that nor can we do that.
If he will work with us and perhaps go 3 years 20 million but that’s probably pushing the envelope for us, and I doubt he’d even go for it.

I like Jalen Reagor from TCU if we could nab him in the third since I want Dobbins in round two.

Not thinking Jalen Reagor lasts that long...... I think there is going to be a huge run on receiver starting outside the top ten in the first round until halfway through the 2nd. There will still be guys available in mid rounds but there should be a definite drop off in the calibre at that point I would think.

We constantly hear that running backs are one contract players. Never pay running backs. I just have minimal interest in a running back in the second. They'll probably only be here for their rookie deal and if you build a good offensive line, you can make an undrafted guy into a star. I'm looking at tackle or wide receiver in the second.

That's a fair take on the situation but I think what a lot of posters are pondering is the fact that we might see what would be a 1st round talent most years fall to us mid 2nd. A stud RB could be the most impactful addition to the team at a discounted price for Ben's last couple of years. If there are BPA in OL or WR then you roll with it as I think we can still land a guy like Akers, Moss later on and a dude I think that is a darkhorse pick in Darrynton Evans

Picking a RB every four years is going to be a likely pattern going forward.... run em and replace em...

RBs Gordon, Howard and Gurley now signed and Freeman still in the wings would seem that the odds of seeing Taylor or Dobbins falling....... just saying

I want a rb or an olineman.

Defensively a dominant NT would be nice.

What ever BPA brings us at the need positions. We could say RB, NT,G,S,T,ILb,OLB, QB, and Wr can all make a case for a selection.

They would look good in black and gold

I’m sticking with the RB Dobbins out of Ohio State. Shifting this offense to a more run oriented one with Dobbins, James and Benny. Now you have two pretty good TE and a good FB, and most importantly a rejuvenated Ben who does not have to throw it 40 times a game.
Receivers should all be better especially Diontae Johnson in his 2nd year.
Please just bring in a veteran backup QB as insurance. I’m not a big Winston fan but, I’ll take him for insurance since he’s been a starter and enjoyed some success but has to get the ints down, way down.

I know some don't like Dobbins but I watched him play a few times this year and he has the whole package. He's fast, strong, can catch, etc. He is a 3 down back and I'd have no problem with him being our pick. In fact, I would be very happy with the pick.

I think the question is that he had a good O-line, but I like the kids overall game.

OL,RB,WR. The defense looks to be in a position to be top 5.
Get that OL set, throw in a wr and they're ready to rumble.

It's on the coaches then. Get it done!

Getting back to these recent FA signings and the trade acquisition, it's worth mentioning Colbert stayed true to the Steelers way we've seen over the years, as far as bringing FA's in.

The goal is always getting relatively young players, coming off their rookie deals, with a few years of solid experience in the NFL.

Wormley 26
Ebron 26
Watt 27

Wisniewski is the one exception, as he's turning 31 soon, but he's got less wear on the tires than most, and also plays interior O-line where players are still playing top-shelf football well into their thirties.

That's why every year when they publish the available FA's list, I immediately zoom in on the 26-28 year olds, as that's likely the group Colbert will be focused on.

Well you guys know I’m pimping Dobbins but I won’t pull a Coach and be critical of the player we pick if it’s not Dobbins.I’ll support whomever we pick, just think he would be a big plus for our offense.

2 G/T/WR Lemeuix Thortonton Claypool
3 WR/OT/RB Claypool Charles Golden NT fotu
4 edge NT C Bachie hamilton Henassy
4 SS WR Chin Muse Peoples Jones TE/WR moss
6 S/LB Hudson Couglin
7 WR Shi Smith

The biggest weakness for the Steelers is ILB. Vince WIlliams, Ulysees GIlbert, and Robert Spillaine accompanying Devin Bush. That is complete weak sauce. If Bush were to go down, they're FUBAR. There are some great prospects that can be had in the late third or fourth round. Dye and Harrison would look great in Black and Gold.

I am almost there with you but think we are short one Oline starter. I think OLBer is right there with ILber. And then QB and RB follow that up as well as a NT and S as well as a WR that can stretch the field.

99% chance the Steelers will be picking players in an entirely different manner than how we imagined it, leading up to the draft.

I don't consider myself qualified to evaluate college talent, so I enjoy reading the comments made here before the draft.

It's even more fun during the draft, right before the Steeler pick, when SN lights up because "that guy" is still on the board.

And when the pick comes in it's like WTF?

Yep, build the trenches! If it was me, 2 picks in our first four go to the oline. I want nasty *** road graders who love to seek and destroy. I have always said, you can turn a road grader into a decent pass protector, but you can't turn a finesse lineman into a road grader! Like you said, you can put anyone behind a great line and they will eat up yards! So, for me, I want Olineman and no RB!

Absolutely! Time for Fitchner to get his head out of his *** and be creative and not so damn predicable.

Qualifications not required
Just throw out your ideas and thought process about our beloved Steeler's draft needs
We can all freak out or celebrate after the fact .... some will even tell us what they should have done 2 years from now........

Oh, OK, this Joe Burrow kid seems to show some potential. Think he'll be there at the Steeler 2nd round pick?

You have 5 weeks to run a smear campaign and secure photo footage to start the landslide into the 2nd round ..... better get started

I think their plans for Feiler will play a role in the 1st pick. If they think he is the long-term answer at LG, they likely go RB or WR with first pick.
If they want to keep him at RT, then that increases the chances the first pick is G or G/C.

Your suggestions are very astute ........ and could very well be the reasonable approach. I don't think there are too many FAs left that the Steelers can afford so the draft is probably the main focus going forward......... those 2nd and 3rd round picks will shed light on how management thinks this team is positioned to compete

Well if they move Feiler that opens up the need for a RT because I am not high on the backups on the roster being able to handle the starting gig.

I really think moving him simply just opens another hole up. I would just double up on a G in 2 or 3.

They would only move Feiler if they are comfortable with Banner or Orkafur starting at RT. Then also bringing in a 4th round tackle to compete with them.

There will be value at G for the #49th pick, not sure a value T will be there.
