Well…look there isn’t much to say after that performance by the Pittsburgh Steelers. A 34-9 beat down by the Carolina Panthers in Carolina. It was the Panthers starters vs the Steelers mostly back-ups, with Dwayne Haskins starting at quarterback. But it didn’t get any better when it was back ups on back ups.

Let’s start with the winners for the sake of something good to talk about.

The Good

James Pierre – Pierre started at corner and solidified the fact that he’s the third best corner on this roster. He was sure on tackles, and was the best player on the field when he was out there. Even if the Steelers look outside of the organization for a slot corner Pierre has done enough to still force Cam Sutton to the slot on passing downs.

Isaiah Buggs – Buggs has had a consistent preseason. He found himself in the back field quiet a bit tonight and appears to have knocked Carlos Davis off the 53 man roster.

Jamie Jones – Jones had another sack tonight to bring his total to 2.5 during the preseason. He also recorded 8 tackles. He likely had a spot locked up, but he didn’t do anything to hurt his chances against the Panthers. He’s just constantly making plays, and he did so against the Panthers starting line tonight.

Now to the bad.. and no we can’t list it all.

The Bad

Dwayne Haskins – Haskins stat line was dismal until he re-entered the game after Joshua Dobbs left with an injury late in the fourth quarter. He wasn’t able to do anything with his opportunity against the Panthers starting defense. His first two possessions were three and outs followed by an interception. At one point he had a 2.8 quarterback rating. His team around him didn’t do him any favors either. Dropped passes, and missed blocks were prevalent.

Pressley Harvin III – Now I don’t believe that he punted his way off of the roster, but he didn’t exactly have his best performance. He only averaged 42.3 yards per punt with a long of 48. He also held on a missed extra point attempt by Boswell late in the game. I didn’t see a good replay of the hold, but it’s worth noting.

Robert Spillane – Gosh, it’s amazing that teams do anything except throw to whoever he’s covering. It’s just continued to get worse for him. It isn’t his fault that he’s being forced to cover DJ Moore, but there were plenty of other opportunities where hes being beaten by much less.

The Steelers SecondaryTre Norwood dropped an interception that hit him right between the numbers. Lamont Wade whiffed hard on Will Grier’s 24 yard touchdown run. Mark Gilbert was called for two penalties. There were zero playa made fr anyone that was inserted into the slot position.

Mathew Sexton – Sexton was in a battle with Ray Ray McCloud for the final receiver spot, and then he went back to field his first punt. He tried to force a return and instead fumbled it away to Carolina. His next return he fumbled it again, but he recovered it. McCloud didn’t do much until his late touchdown from Haskins, but Sexton is likely going to find himself on the practice squad.

Not sure the ramifications but I wonder if Wormley could get cut in favor of keeping Buggs and Davis?

with tuitt hurting Wormley, Buggs and Davis are keepers. Move Alualu to DE with Heyward, then you have Buggs as DT, or get Wormley as the DE with Alualu as the NT

These last preseason games are a train wreck more often than not. Just way too many green guys all over the place. If you add in that they're trying to do too much and make errors on top of being green, it's a recipe for an awful performance.

I always try and skip these last practice games from watching.

Snell didn't do anything to keep a roster spot in my eyes. I'd keep Ballage over him for sure and have Ballage backing up Najee. It should come down to Snell and Samuels and I keep Samuels for his good receiving ability and moderate running ability. I know Snell was coming back from an injury but he wasn't that great before the injury.

Losers for sure is this secondary.....they were lacking in all aspects of being a defensive back.

I didn’t get to see the game. Who started on the offensive line for the Steelers…backups?

AGAIN, Dan Moore was a man amognst men.

PS

Good article Justin, thanks.

Haskins looked mediocre but the receivers dropping passes (not Watt) Duxbury help either...

If be trying to trade Benny until he's gone.

Steve Smith is funnier that Emmitt Smith. Drunk *** had me dying laughing listening to him trying to use the English vocabulary!!!

Was it just me or did Okorafor have a pretty damn good game against burns? I didn’t get to see whole game but burns is a great test he brings it every play he finds a weakness and exploits it… him oak went at it pretty good… so far he’s looks pretty darn good came into camp in great shape and has been pretty good… how well he steps into that left tackle spot is going to be a key to our season. GO Steelers!!!

Considering CAR had their ones starting against our twos and threes, they held pretty good in the first half. Had a stop on downs, held to a field goal attempt on short fields twice. 2nd half the threes and fours were gassed.

Jamir Jones makes the team IMO over Marsh. There was some talk that Boz PAT was on him and pulled it. But you can only guess. Pressley didn’t have any problems the other 3 games.

Gilbert could be a find, but there will be a ton of players available in 5 days.
