By Jared Villani SteelerNation.com Although the Pittsburgh Steelers do not possess a first round draft pick, they could still find a great deal of value with the 49th overall pick by snagging Wisconsin’s stud running back, Johnathan Taylor. The simple fact that Steelers current running back James Conner has had issues staying healthy over his […]

No they will not. They already have a crowded room. The quality of Snell and Samuels is unknown, because you can't run if you have passing game problems. If they add a luxury it will be at receiver.

Will they? Not if someone else drafts him first.

I saw some nonsense about a trade with the Jags for Fournette for a package includingJames Conner. That actually doesn't sound too bad if it could be done.

Yeah I saw they are shopping Fournette.......mass exodus out of Jagland.....

At least we would have a RB who knows how to win a playoff game in Pittsburgh

Steelers also went LB 5 of 7 years for their first overall pick. If they feel it is a need they will not hesitate using multiple picks at that position. They have spoke with Taylor a lot and the Steelers don't play smoke and mirrors with their visits. If they are talking to him they are interested. My guess he is one of a handful of players they are targeting at 49.

There are up to 4 LBs on the field. And one failed and one was permanently injured. Listening to Colbert today, I really dont think they are taking RB in round 2.

Steelers talked to a lot of RBs and a lot of everyone else. Taylor has a lot of carries a lot of fumbles and a lot of teams that probably are looking in his direction. Cooch liked him so that right there almost assures bust status. I hope he is off the board so that it isn't even a consideration.

If a RB is taken, hope it isn’t Taylor, just on Slash’s comments above. Dobbins, if available, could be a sure thing. Never been in this situation before waiting for day 2 for a pick.

Steelers have only spoke with two running backs this year, Taylor and Zack Moss. My guess is they have interest with both. Taylor definitely has a fumbling issue putting the ball on the turf every 54 touches. But besides that can you honestly find a big hole in his game? Elite speed, balance, power, developing hands and pass pro. I mean if it wasn't for the fumbles he's Zeke Elliott.

So out of curiousity who would you rather have, Taylor at 49 or Moss at 102?

There is 7 RB prospects they have showed interest in, and that is just the ones I know about. Go to the visits thread. I think that if a RB falls that they weren't expecting they could take him regardless of what's known. It wouldn't be the first Steeler drafted under this circumstance.

I think the Steelers are trading down to late 2nd or early 3rd, if Taylor is still there then he might be the pick, but at 2.49 I doubt it

I found Walterfootball has 4 RB’s they have spoke with I can’t find anything with more. Taylor, moss, Akers and Evans. Who are the other 3?

Yes, if someone falls unexpectedly they’d take them. I just feel they have interest in Taylor and the only reason he might (I personally think he goes late first early second) be there at 49 is because of the fumbling. Maybe they see something on tape which they feel they can correct. But he’s definitely an option if he’s there at 49.

Colbert said they would take a top player even if they already have a starter at that position. To me, that means one of the top RB's is definitely on the table (and should be if they are there) with our 1st pick at 2.49.

See that is your problem you went to Walter for news you could have found here. (visit thread is stickied at the top).

So you want a player with the first pick with the highest percentage or one of the highest percentages of fumbling and hope they can correct it?

You must have missed where fans almost lost their **** when seldom Juju coughed the ball up and to this day rag on Mendenhall.

Sure the Steelers kicked his tires, like I said they kicked a lot of tires.

For me I prefer the kick the idea of drafting him to the curb. Let someone else experiment fixing his notable flaw.

IF I had to guess who they are more interested in it would be LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Also the Steelers interviewed 125 players. Safe to say there is some they showed interest in that I am even unaware of and I constantly look.

Dillon is my running back of choice in this years draft.

I believe the Steelers will go best O-Lineman available with their first overall...

Why would they trade down? They have no first round pick if they trade down they basically won't be getting any picks till round 3. Unless they think quality oline will be there late round 2 or early 3, but imo they need an almost sure thing at some position in the line

they could trade to late 2nd and pick an extra early 4th in the process. They are one pick short and they lost a lot of depth this offseason, if the guys they are targeting at 2.49 are gone they might see it better to trade back and pick their second tier of prospects there, maybe the Vikings at 2.58 + their 4.105 ?

So you don’t think the Steelers have any interest? At 49 I personally would have Taylor as an option. Depending on how the board fell would determine if he was the pick in a fantasy world where I’m GM. I also think the Steelers have interest in him. I think they have interest for a few running backs but I guess I’m assuming or hoping they don’t feel Moss or Akers are worth 49.

Here’s a good article on what the Steelers look for in a running back by analyzing previous drafted running backs. There’s only 3 that check off all the boxes and Taylor is the only one of those three the Steelers have spoke with (at least to my knowledge).

I like Edwards-Helaire and thought he was the biggest reason they dominated vs Clemson but physically he is very limited. Smaller backs like MJD have defied the odds but he also was a burner where Edwards-Helaire is more of a grinder. Also, I’m unaware if the Steelers have shown any interest in drafting Edwards-Helaire. Not saying they don’t have any just saying it’s hard for me to gauge the level of interest if they haven’t even spoke to the young man.

BPA regardless. If there is a top 5 OL there and you are down to the 8th or 9th RB or WR, you take the OL.The LB and DL are nowhere as deep as OT and WR this year, and it’s not a good draft for TEs. DBs are solid and a S could come into play early rather than lately.

Uncharted territory in regards to the philosophy, but I think Colbert will play it smart. If a top 5 player falls whether RB (Dobbins) WR (Reagor or that Arizona State kid) OL (one of those big OTs) maybe DB (Winfield Jr.) that’s who gets drafted. Definitely looking at OLB, LB, DT and S/$B in later rounds. Oh, and no Punter or QB will be drafted.

When you have a first round pick it's easier to go for a particular position, and the Steelers did just that in picking up Minkah.
That philosophy gets harder in the later rounds, even at 49.

Ya, I know, Captain Obvious.

I hope they do go for the BPA, rather reaching for a perceived need.

It's not that far off the chart values that something couldn't be worked out if Vikings want someone badly enough.

what chart are you using .........??

value from 49 to 58 is 90 points 410-320
value of spot 89 is 145 points

that 55 points difference would equate to Minny wanting our 4th round to bring the numbers more in line

I can understand saying that you would be willing to trade back with a team in the draft if the right circumstances present themselves.... but I can't justify naming a particular team and determining what they would give up, until you are about 2 spots away from your pick at 2.49 and can actually see what has come off the board, what is still available to you and if you do trade back ...who else may trade up and steal one of the options you thought you could still draft by trading back in the first place... too many variables......,
