Pittsburgh Steelers former first-round pick Artie Burns has had a tough time acclimating to life in the NFL and unfortunately his spot on the team may be in jeopardy ahead of the 2019 season. Although Burns has shown promising glimpses in the past, most notably his rookie season, he was very underwhelming in 2018. Burns […]

Burns is due $800,000 on the first day of training camp so this may be another knock against the former Florida Gator.

he went to Miami.

I think no. But if he did turn it around wow what a story that would make. Artie you can do it!

$800,000.00 is a cheap "try him out" training camp VS his potential. If he can regain 2/3 of what he had and then build on that it would be well worth the up front cost. This is where coaching staff earns their money, making these decisions and projecting the future of players. Art 2 doesn't have nearly the football talent evaluation as his DAD had so we must count more on our DB guru coach to determine.

Salute the nation

Athletically he has it, but mentally it's not there. I put alot of that on the coaches though. If you have been to training camp since he was drafted, he's been manned up on AB in the WR/CB drills, and he's usually right in AB's pocket, AB definitely gets the better of the him, but Burns is usually right there. He's a man corner, he's not good in zone coverage, they must find away to get him in man situations more.

If he's gotten better between the ears this season, he can make our entire secondary stronger. If not, he's gone.

I personally think if he's the 5th/6th best CB, you still may have to cut him to make room for a younger, cheaper player with more potential. If he makes it to the top 3/4, you keep him. He still has starter potential.

He likely makes the team just for depth and plays on special teams. There is no way he gets that 5th year option unless he can do a complete 180 on his play.

Yes I think he will.

Here is the problem. This team has trouble once it doesn't have merit based play. They always follow the dollar. If they give him the 800k he is on the team no matter if a younger guy is better. I'd cut him and give the cash to Hilton who has earned

Artie Burns $957,862 $1,293,815 $800,000 $0 $0 $3,051,677
$1,293,815
$1,757,862

Its a $460+K cap savings with almost $1.3M in dead money to cut him. You then need to find someone to replace him. Yes the $800K is also saved if they cut him. History just doesn't show them doing that. I'd try to trade him for a 6th or 7th rounder if he can even fetch that.

send him and a 6th to Arizona for PEDerson - since PEDerson is missing the first six weeks.

Get back to what? When the hell has he been good? He was a horrible reach when he was selected, and has been a disappointment since Day 1.

He was a reach since the moment they drafted him in the 1st round. A lot of us knew it. But we are supposed to kiss Colbert's ring and maintain the lie that he is so super smart.

Everyone had him as a 2nd-3rd round pick. No one thought he was 1st-round talent. He was/IS beyond raw. He gets totally lost in zone, like he's not even close to being able to play it. They said
they would "coach him up" to play zone, but, oops, this staff seems incapable of coaching anyone up on D. Cool Shades just twirls his headset cord.

Cut bait and move the F on. Stop protecting your ego and do the right thing.

He's definitely better in tight man coverage when he doesn't have to really pay attention to the backfield. He gets caught looking in the backfield way too often in zone or off coverage.

That’s the BIG if Cope, he is denying all interviews from the media. Maybe he is trying to avoid distractions while trying to make the club, or he has got in his head already that media perception will dictate his future. He really just needs to concentrate on film study to be better “anticipating” the play opposite him each snap.

In other words, Tomlin sucks. :spy:

Thank you. This is exactly right. Horrible pick that has 'progressed' predictably. And as for Burns having any kind of alleged value as Special Teams contributor, I thought they were trying to improve their tackling skills in that area...

If that was the case, Antonio Brown would still be a Steeler. The Steelers won’t throw good money.at bad money.

that is bullshit. a lot of mocks had him going in the first round and more than a few had him going to the steelers.

Totally different situation. If Burns gets his 800k roster bonus he is a Steeler regardless of how he performs it was the same with Uncle Jarvis and Dupree and about 19 other guys I could name. Follow the money.

I know the bleacher report had him going late first round to KC I think it was, had us taking William Jackson III
