Bruce Arians played key role in Steelers picking Antonio Brown

Antonio Brown's 40-time, small stature, and raw route running scared off 31 other teams during the 2010 NFL Draft.
Brown's detractions did not deter former Steelers offensive coordinator and current Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians, who was delighted when Mike Tomlin asked him the following question when the Steelers were on the board with the 195th pick.

"You like your little one-cut guy here?" Tomlin asked Arians, via ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "I love him right here," Arians said.

When a team passes on a guy for 5 rounds that's not really "pounding the table". 32 teams passed on him for multiple rounds then a head coach handed an OC a ps pick.

Better post title: Intended ps WR outplays role and becomes top tier WR

Well....do you think Tomlin would have listened to Arians if he suggested that they take a player with a low round grade in the 1st or 2nd Round? I think not. I think the article refers to Arians pounding the table to take Brown there because he was the person who really liked him. I bet if you asked Arians at the time, he saw something more than a P.S. player in Brown.

I think Ayers has the tools to be the next late round surprise from the Steelers war room. Great hands, nice change of direction. If he shows ABs work ethic he could be a very useful player.

I'm not saying Antonio's level but a real contributor at least

Exactly, you're reinforcing my point...had Arians convinced Tomlin that AB was going to be a star and we HAD to take him before someone snatched him up and we grabbed a WR with a late round grade in the 2nd-3rd that would've involving some "table pounding" i.e. a difference of opinions where someone had to be convinced. That was hardly the case though. Under Tombert the 6-7 range is where we draft developmental players for the ps. Tomlin offered Arians the pick to grab his guy after everyone passed on him several times, more of a "here use this pick for your guy" agreement than any "table pounding".

I'm not saying Arians didn't see more than a ps player in AB, simply that there was absolutely ZERO "table pounding" as the two were in lock step for what to do with the pick.

I have to agree here. If there is any table pounding going on............Its the "Bruce" hitting it from the underside all so full of himself. He called the plays the same way, smarter to out smart the opponent then to ******* call plays that allowed you to out play the opponent. He is looking back, after the fact, and claiming responsibility. Again, in my opinion, the door couldn't hit his fat *** fast enough as he was leaving....

Too true DIC, had Arians stayed Ben would already be retired from the extra injuries sustained under that O.

Haley sure has some head scratcher moments, but he devised an O to keep Ben upright and alive at least.

Or the last time we won a super bowl, it was with Arians. Without Arians we might now have Brown, a team MVP.
 
nothing in that article mentions "fist pounding" talk.....Tomlin tossed his OC a bone and took a guy he wanted...late in the draft....kinda like he allowed his special teams coach to get a guy he wanted late in last years draft....

typical bullshit thread title that has nothing to do with the article....

Yet some here want to CREDIT the "Bruce" for the SB win. Our team won inspite of the "bruce". We had a really good couple of teams under the "bruce" but it was inspite of the ****** up play calling. I've said it before My One Armed **** Flinging Monkey rental buisnes thrived under the "bruce" as they had BETTER play calling than him.

Maybe not, but with Arians, we also did have Limas Sweed--a bust.
 
Ah yes the **** flinging monkey!!! I really like him as a developing QB prospect late in this draft...in fact I will pound the table for the **** flinging monkey if he goes undrafted for 5 rounds. He could be good competition for LJ and the other Berger. His reads are slow but he can make all the throws necessary.
 
It helps to have a hof qb, who's best trait is to improvise, throwing you the ball... even dhb looks good with Ben running the offense. Had brown gone to many other teams we wouldn't be talking about him.
 
The unfortunate thing is that when Ben retires in a year or 2 we may have a vastly overpaid AB if he is yet another in a line of WRs Ben has made to look better than they actually are. Not hating on AB or saying he can't be good without Ben, but he certainly hasn't shown to be much of a threat with the others throwing to him (yeah I know they're backups/scrubs but it is what it is). AB will never be Julio, Fitz or Megatron...he'll always be a shifty little "one cut guy" that is very dependent on a QB being in sync with him to get him his numbers.
 
I think Ben is here this year & next. After that is all bonus years. As for Brown, above average but NOT top 12 with out great QB. Will be overpaid if STEELERS can't get a high mid grade or elite replacement for Rothlisberger. Then watch the ME FIRST ATTITUDE come out even stronger with him.

To use words like do you want your little one cut receiver now is a bit derogatory, wouldn't you say? NO, you would not. You're a Tomlin B@ll washer, whcih means you felt the need to defend him here.

If not for Arians, we lose a team MVP in this draft. As a former WR himself, you'd think Tomlin would know talent when he sees it.

I am not defending him here. I am stating that the article does not even imply that brucie was "pounding on the table" as your thread title states.

what if Tomlin had not thrown that question to brucie????

The article doesn't give nearly enough information for you to claim ONLY brucie liked AB at that spot. It is possible that Tomlin AB was good value at that slot since he asked the question. But we don't know and won't know because we were not in the room.....
 
I didn't realize when I commented that this was an "Arians sucks" thread. I wouldn't have bothered commenting about Brown if I knew because that apparently isn't even the conversation, despite the topic. Bruce sucks! / Bruce Rules! Carry on.
