I am glad they won, because USA, but man that team was hard to like and I assume that is only going to get worse.
I keep hearing about the goals record for the tournament, but everyone seems to gloss over the fact that 18 of those 26 goals were scored against Chile and Thailand. And for the individual awards, the Gold and Silver boots specifically, Rapinoe and Morgan each had 6 goals. 5 of Morgan's came against Thailand, and 3 or 4 of Rapinoe's were PK's.
To me, while the European teams France, Germany, England, Spain, and Netherlands are pretty good and improving, the rest of the draw was cannon fodder. I mean, Thailand qualified after losing 11 of the 12 previous games they played. And FIFA is talking about expanding the draw for the next World Cup. It isn't going to make the game better have 6 or 8 Thailand's in the draw.
It is great that they won, and they should have won, but the way it is being treated as some monumental achievement is a little over the top. The women's game just isn't as deep as the men's game. Maybe in time, but the US was the easily the best team in a mostly weak field. To lose would have been embarrassing.
As far as the pay, I really don't give a ****. Personally, I think in a perfect world, the women's team would earn more. At least they win tournaments. However, revenue drives the pay scale, and this is what they negotiated in 2017. Maybe they should be pissed at themselves a little for their pay checks.
