I could see them going after Garrett when he is canned.
no way. The panthers new owner is a hedge fund guy. He’s into analytics. Part of why he fired Rivera is likely because he refused to embrace analytics. Garrett has also scoffed at analytics. My guess is the Panthers new coach will be a young coach who loves analytics.
i think analytics in football is just false hope. Analytics work more in baseball because there are so many games, so it plays out. However, I feel that only applies to the regular season. Postseason baseball is short and analytics doesn’t have time to play out. Also you have tougher pitching rotations because a starter could be coming out of the bullpen instead of that scrub middle reliever.
The selling point of analytics is that if you follow it, your team will likely be competitive. In baseball, that’s huge. It means you are doing enough to keep fans coming and making money. It does not guarantee championships.
i feel it has even less impact on football. Right now you hear about the Pats and Ravens being all in on analytics. Funny how they never mention the ****** teams that are also using analytics. Why doesn’t the magic work for them?
You’ll hear them crowing about how analytics is why the Ravens are going for it so much on 4th down. That’s why they’re winning. What a crock of ****. They go for it on 4th and short so much because they are a top run offense with a running QB. That’s why their success rate is so high. Analytics people would have you believe that the simple act of going for it on 4th and 2 guarantees success. It does, in the long term. But not on that 1 big play in a single game.
What Analytics does is provide cover for owners and coaches. Owners get to be viewed as doing everything possible to win. Coaches have a get out of stupid decision free card. Now literally any decision can be justified by just saying the chart said to go for it. Can’t argue with the chart!
