Steelers Expected To Activate Sutton From Injured Reserve

Even with five healthy cornerbacks, and a sixth in Joe Haden who's hopeful of returning by the end of the regular season, the Steelers are expected to recall rookie cornerback Cameron Sutton from the injured reserve list early this week.
Sutton was the team's third-round draft pick out of Tennessee who missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury. He returned to play in the third preseason game and broke up a pass on his first play as a slot defender. On the next series, as an outside corner, Sutton tackled a running back for a 3-yard loss.
Sutton also played in the fourth preseason game. Overall in the preseason he played 27 defensive snaps and 7 special-teams snaps, and made 6 tackles with a quarterback hit and the pass defense.
Sutton made the 53-man roster out of camp, but, because he aggravated his injury in the fourth game, was put on IR the following day.
The Steelers are allowed two recalls from the IR list and Sutton would be the first, and probably only, such move they make this season.
Sutton began practicing following the Steelers' late-October win in Detroit, and his 21-day trial period ends Tuesday. The Steelers could leave him on IR for the season, but they like the way he practiced and are expected to activate him without making a corresponding move in the secondary.
That means fellow rookie cornerback Brian Allen, a 6-3 fifth-rounder, can rest easy.
The same can't be said for the rest of the 53-man roster. Inside linebacker L.J. Fort has already been released and re-signed by the team and could probably clear waivers and return to the practice squad. Defensive tackle Daniel McCullers has played only 11 defensive snaps in his three active games. Offensive tackle Jerald Hawkins has been inactive for every game this season. Offensive tackle/guard Matt Feiler has played in three games and been inactive for four.
Sutton would provide depth on the outside and in the slot, and, based on his quality play in the preseason, could even become a significant piece by the end of the season for coordinator Keith Butler.
However, the Steelers are coming off a game in which the secondary intercepted four passes for the first time in 20 years. Slot corner Mike Hilton had the first, followed by Haden's substitute, Coty Sensabaugh, reserve safety Robert Golden and finally strong safety Sean Davis.
"The rush did a great job," Davis said of the defensive front's 5-sack performance Thursday. "Made the quarterback throw some crazy throws. He overthrew a couple of people, so kudos to the rush.
"The defense did a good job on a short week. We did a good job recognizing what they were trying to do to us. We did a good job of disguising and breaking on routes."
The interception spree moved the Steelers up to fourth in the NFL with 12 total interceptions. However, they fell from second to third in overall pass defense, and from fourth to 12th in the all-important yards-per-attempt category thanks to another long touchdown pass, this one a 75-yarder by Rishard Matthews.
Only four days earlier the Steelers allowed touchdown passes of 60 and 75 yards to the Indianapolis Colts.
"We believe in all those guys," said linebacker Ryan Shazier. "We know that they can make plays no matter who's in."
