Let's be honest, we all have our favorite picks for the first round, but none of us really have a clue on who the FO will choose. This is a pretty deep draft at positions of need for us, so many players probably have similar grades and could go really anywhere from pick 30 to 65.
Assuming the FO and scouting department are doing their jobs competently, I'm curious to know which players at Pick 30 the board is comfortable with?
I don't think, Reddick and Barnett will be there as LBs, nor do I believe Conley will as he's been a late riser. Here's some names to consider:
ILB
Zach Cunningham - Vandy
OLB
TJ Watt - Wisconsin
Takk McKinley - UCLA
Charles Harris - Missouri
Tim Williams - Bama
Carl Lawson - Auburn
Tyus Bowser - Houston
CB
Tredavious White - LSU
Marlon Humphry - Bama
Adoree Jackson - USC
Chidobe Awuzie - Colorado
Kevin King - Washington
S
Budda Baker - Washington
Jabrill Peppers - Michigan
Obi Melifonwu - UConn
Wild Cards associated to Steelers in some Mocks
Deshone Kizer - QB, Notre Dame
John Ross - WR, Washington
David Njoku - TE, Miami
For me, I'm warming up to the idea of taking Awuzie. From what I've seen and read, he's got the size, intelligence, aggression and skill to fill an immediate void for us. I know pass rusher is a priority, but I think the availability of the second round rushers (maybe Williams or Bowser falls. Maybe they like Rivers from Youngstown State in round 2 or 3) will offer better value. I also think a younger DB may be able to contribute faster than a rookie OLB.
I wouldn't be upset if we took McKinley and found a DB in round 2 that could play. Not sure who that would be. Maybe Jordan Lewis from Michigan? Desmond King from Iowa? Doubt any of the safeties I mentioned fall to our 2nd pick.
Little worried about Watt as our OLB. Does he have the size to stuff the run like we need. I know he's not Jarvis by any means, but I'm concerned about drafting most college OLB instead of college DE in our system. Could just be me.
I like what Sean Davis brought to field last season and believe he'll improve in year two. I'm a Michigan fan, but have my questions about Peppers in coverage. As a Michigan fan I'd be happy to have him on the team, he has pedigree and skill but as Steeler fan I have a little angst. Would Baker be an upgrade over Mitchell?
