What was the arguing about on the sideline?

Nothing was wrong with running a running play with 11 seconds left.

The idiocy occurred when Ben failed to immediately call time out on the tackle. The clock clicked 4sec off and stopped at 3sec, when it should have stopped at 7. Giving the team one more chance to throw to the EZ before the FG attempt on 4th down. That is poor game recognition and deserves a good screaming at each and every time.

Tomlin was trying to call timeout immediately, but the nearest refs were 25 yards away, due to the rule the coaching staff can't go past the 30's. He tried pleading his case to the refs to put more time on the clock, but they couldn't because they didn't see him. He probably then let Ben know it's his ******* job to know the down/timing situation on a failed run.

The former QB was even shocked there, and it was from the 6 or 7 yard line, if it were the 2, then ok, but you're probably not scoring on a running play there.

Yep ..Ben was pissed at the dumb **** run call.

While the Pittsburgh Steelers did ultimately beat the Cincinnati Bengals 29-14 Sunday at Heinz Field, their recent string of offensive woes inside the red zone continued on. The Steelers offense managed to convert just one of their six Sunday red zone trips into a touchdown and one of those failed trips came late in the first half. The end of that particular drive included a very curious play call with 12 seconds remaining before halftime that will surely be discussed quite a bit this coming week.

Following a Bengals timeout, the Steelers offense faced a 2nd down and 5 from the Bengals 5-yard-line with 12 seconds remaining in the first half. Pre snap, the Steelers offense had an empty backfield and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger then proceeded to direct running back Le’Veon Bell back to the backfield as a sidecar to his right. After the football was snapped, Roethlisberger handed the football off to Bell and he ran left behind pulling right guard David DeCastro.

Bell was quickly bottled up by the Bengals defense with 7 seconds remaining in the first half, however, head coach Mike Tomlin wasn’t able to get his timeout request heard until there were 3 seconds remaining. At that point there wasn’t enough time to run another play and kicker Chris Boswell was sent in to kick a 24-yard field goal.

The decision to run the football with 12 second remaining instead of passing it was a very dubious call. After the game was over, Roethlisberger was asked about that particular call and the events that led up to it during his talk with the media.

“We had a pass play called and we had a really good look and then I’m not sure what happened,” Roethlisberger started to explain. “The timeout, or something happened, and then we changed the play because we had a timeout. And Todd [Haley] was just telling me that we have a timeout so lets change the play. And I’m a little frustrated with that because I don’t think that’s the time and the place for that. You’ve got 7 seconds, I believe it was 7 or 8, whatever it was, with a timeout. That’s at least two shots at the end zone, but we run the plays that are called. They must have saw something, thought we can get it. I hate to just get 3-points down there, I think that’s what is so frustrating about that particular series.”

When Roethlisberger walked off the field following that failed running play you could tell he wasn’t happy. Tomlin wasn’t happy, either, but that mostly seemed to be because he thought he had a timeout called with 7 seconds remaining in the first half. Roethlisberger and Tomlin also exchanged a few heated words as the team left the field for halftime.

While the Steelers did manage to get 3-points on that drive to end the first half, the offense missed a golden opportunity to score a touchdown thanks to the failed running play and subsequent failure to get a quick timeout called immediately after Bell was tackled.

It sounds like you can put the blame squarely on the shoulders of Haley for that butchered red zone trip and thankfully it didn’t wind up costing the Steelers the game.

Tony Romo was doing the play by play on the broadcast I got to watch. Not until he pointed it out did I realize on 3rd and short the Steelers run the same formation. I'm sure there are other reasons but I'm thinking Ben is getting bored with the "same old-same old" play calling.

If that is indeed the case, then it's time to upgrade our OC fur shur.

3rd and 1 yard for a first down should not be an insurmountable task for a team with an OL like ours, a cadre of self aggrandizing super star wr's like ours and a trio of rb's the likes of which we haven't seen in years.

Someting wong fo sho

The play calling in the red zone has been atrocious for 2 years running. The schemes and the calls are on the coaches. They haven't worked.. I hope that is what Ben is pissed about. Let him have more say in what is going on in the redzone. Run the hurry up inside the 20. It can't hurt and it will keep the D on their heels with no substitutions.

Same formation does not mean same play.

I think they ran 3 different plays, at least, out of that formation. I would expect that it is with Ben determining, by the D lineup, which play that would be.

According to the Ben presser, they had a pass play that they loved, but Cincinnati called time out. Haley decided on the run. It didn't work. Tomlin was pissed because they didn't give him the time out with 7 seconds. Ben was mad he didn't get two plays to throw it into the endzone.

My guess had been that they were arguing about why the TO wasn't called at 7 seconds.

Atrocious play calling. I don't know if running the ball with 8 seconds left is as bad as throwing deep on 3rd and 1 when you have the best rb in the league. Or better yet lets take Bell off the field and hand the ball off to the journeyman Watson. I have nothing against Watson but the only time he ever sees the field is 3rd or 4th and short? Why not mix him into some other plays so its not so obvious what is going to happen when he comes onto the field?
The halftime clock debacle came shortly after Romo was gushing about what a great coach Tomlin is and how he is a father figure to young guys like JuJu. All in all it was a great win but so frustrating to see another field goal fest from Haley. Meanwhile The Pats have the highest scoring offense in the league. Field goals ain't gonna cut it.

I love how everyone projects with Ben...you know "Ben can do no wrong", yeah just don't examine his past and his selfishness. You know what the latest incarnation of Ben's last name is now?

Weisensteinberger................lol C'mon you know that's funny. Read it on another forum.

Its because Ben is white isn't it?

I read late yesterday that Haley checked Ben into a run play and Ben wanted to pass. Maybe Ben complained and Tomlin ripped him

Running a play with 11 seconds to go is DUMB. It means you get one play and then kick the FG. Plus, we didn't have a quick run up the middle, we had a slow developing run to the left that took a ton of time off the clock. Passing the ball pretty much would have guaranteed 2 shots to the endzone and then a kick for the FG.

Why we can't throw the ball into the endzone and score when we are inside the 10 and especially the 5 just baffles me. Other teams do it all the ******* time. But, for 2 plus years now, we can't do it even though we supposedly practice it all the time.

And, seriously, WTF happened to all of the plays they practiced with Bryant during the week in the red zone? He wasn't even in the game on many of those plays. I just don't get our personnel decisions or our play calling. It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ******* erratic.

It was dumb. Tweedledum and Tweedledee should know better.

Here's that Ben said

Even Romo was saying you have two shots here and were shocked we ran it. ****** conservative bull crap again there

Certain posters here at trying to blame Ben. Check the other posts, its either sad or funny, I can't decide which.

Want to know how bad Ben is at clock management? He didn't even know how much time he had when he QBed the running play. He had 11 sec. Not 7, not 8.

So now Coach Cliche and Haley have no responsibility in clock management that is only on the QB...Why the **** do we even have a coaching staff since they are not responsible for or accountable for anything?

Did you read Ben's statement? Haley called the running play so how does Ben handing the ball off of "QBed the running play" have anything to do with the play called by the OC?

Wasn't he the QB during the play? QB'ing a play doesn't mean calling it, necessarily, it means being the QB that runs the play. Right?

Your user name is both sad AND funny.

If tomlin is standing on the 30 yrd line and ben is standing on say the 10. Who is closer to the ref? Who is right there and handed off the ball? Who is the "captain on the field"

There is something wrong with you man. Go check your meds.. Eat a snickers,,, whatever..

Tomlin has a ton of responsibility, He actually called it. At 7 sec, and was infuriated that A) the Refs didn't correctly credit his time and B) that Ben lacked the game awareness to call timeout. Here's the worst part of Ben's game awareness, they HAD to call the timeout, and if it wasn't for Tomlin, Ben would have watched dumbfounded as the clock ran out. I honestly don't know what Ben was thinking and why he couldn't react to the game situation like most HOF QBs.

And Ark is right. QBing a play is running the play as the QB. The QB took the handoff. And I do have to correct myself, Ben actually started that play with 12sec, not 11. But def not 7 or 8. He was too busy not calling a timeout at 8 and 7 seconds...
