What was different on defense?

So I missed all of about 5 minutes of this game as I travel for work. The parts I saw were from an airport TV. What did the Steelers do differently to only give up 10 to the *'s?

I saw a couple minutes of the first half and the final 3 minutes of the game.

They had a few key drops that may have otherwise turned into big plays.. but I think the coverage was just so much better than were used to, and we made Br*dy more uncomfortable than we usually do with pressure

Benched Artie after the first TD miscue.
Went to man coverage when the cheats started to move the ball.
Put Watt in pass rushing situations often.
Prior to the game was mentored for a week by a ex Giants coach.
Overall got better D-line pressure.

Pats had a few drops and a ton of penalties. Plus Brady just chucked up a ball which was picked off by Haden. We also took gronk out of the game

You forgot one VERY important thingy............

TOMLIN had a little "hot seat" conversation this past week and prepared much better than normal..................

Salute the nation

I am no football expert, but outside of one obvious play, dare I say there was an attention to detail that had been lacking?

Like I've said, we are good enough to beat anyone, but inconsistent enough to lose to anyone.

Without bringing the same effort next week we find outlrselves in a bad place

That can happen when your team has their back against the wall.

Someone on the staff said, “Dont let Gronk beat us”. That last defensive stand didn’t seem so hard when several on the field actually listened. Final score of this game should have been 20-3 Steelers.
We get to do it all again next week.

No big plays outside of the miscommunication that resulted in the only touchdown of the game. I think Brady only had a handful of deep shots throughout the game.

New England finished with 14 penalties--a number they aren't used to seeing on their side.

They seemed to just ignore Gronk, like they were saving him for the end of the game. Not sure what was up with that.

I was also surprised they didn't use James White in the passing game. That is the type of running back who could've had a very productive day if they go him involved

NE has always committed the penalties, but I guess for some reason the refs were told to call them. Perhaps as a make up for the catch that wasn't last season.

I don't expect that to carry into the Post Season.

Tomlin said the mix up on the Hogan TD was not on Burns, if that means anything.
We seemed to play tighter coverage for the most, part didn't see to many big cushions.
NE did have 3 big drops, each would've resulted in a first down and 105 penalty yards.
Of course we had AB have a ball go right through his hands and result in a pick and JuJu probably catches that ball over the defender in the endzone late most times

A lot of traffic, but a play you expect AB to make. JuJu's was the exclamation point I wanted on that win.

Burns was on the outside. If they were in a zone defense it WAS NOT his fault. The safety should have passed off his guy and stuck to Hogan.

If it was man... Well - Artie left his guy.

We are horrible at zone communication and passing guys off... we are way better at man...

Also anyonenotice that NE is using a lot of old lebeau stuff this season? More than usual in this game...

All the above, lol

Burns gets the blame since the announcers who had no ******* clue who ****** up that play assumed it was Burns since he was standing next to Tomlin on the sidelines when the next defensive series started....

It might not have been Burns fault but he was gone after that play.

Here's the thing that I found interesting, in the post game, Tomlin said he was late getting the communication into the game on that play.
So....Tomlin is calling the defense?

Coach Cool Shades is just trying to keep Burns’ Head in the season, you never know when you have no other choice. As far as what MT really thinks, just look at Hilton’s snap count after the TD, and who was standing next to MT on the sideline.

The Steelers did to the Patriots what the Patriots usually do to the Steelers.

They took the best play-maker out of the game - Gronk
They ran the ball
They pressured Tom Brady
If Ben would have stayed with what appeared to be a very conservative game and converted 3rd and mediums into 1st downs instead of trying 3 times that I can remember going for the big play the game wouldn't have come down to the last drive.
