Williams really isn’t a sub package defender in the nickel or dime. He’s simply too slow.

He’s not a special teams ace either.

And he’s not a cheap back up.

It’s a fair statement to say that Bush should be on the field in every deployment before Williams.

Outside of well timed blitzes ( something bush was also good at in college ) I wonder what his role will be on the team?

Maybe veteran locker room presence could fit but that role is best suited for an older former great player on the decline.

Vince probably is still the best run blocker.

And a good blitzer.

Coach you love you some bashing players.

But he is a starter get over it.

With the way Mark Barron looked last night, don't be giving up on Vince. I'm not saying Barron was terrible, but he was certainly nothing special. Bush looked like the 7th year veteran out there.

Bush and Barron remind of Edmunds and Burnett from last year. Some how I don’t see Barron seeing a lot of field time.

Maybe so but on run downs I'd rather have a true run stuffer at MLB. What you can do is send him to his gap and if its play action he continues to the qb. Keep Bush covered and drop him if he smells pass.

Best run blocker? If you mean best inside linebacker vs the run and narrow the definition to biggest hitter, I’d agree with you

In terms of snaps played I see a reduced role.

He’s a starter in announcement only. Barron might get more snaps.

Williams is a two down player these days and with multiple we formations with receivers a liability at times when teams decide to pass on downs one and two.

I’m a fan of Vince. He’s a colorful and personable guy from what i’be read in the media. When have I bashed him? But don’t kid yourself, this could be his last season as. Steeler. I just don’t see much of a Role for him barring injuries. You’re welcome to tell me where and when you think he’ll be on the field. I see less than 60 percent of the snaps for Williams. How often was he on the field last year with no one at ILB? It will be far less with Bush on the team.

I agree Ark. If anything I see Barron as the redundant player. Unless Bush takes a lot of steps backwards or is injured, what exactly is Barron's role?

That would be nickel defense. The Steelers signed Barron to upgrade coverage and team speed

We play nickel more often than 3-4. If we are 4-3 format Bush takes that role.

Here’s a better question. Since we have to keep Barron at least this year because of his contract what do the Steelers do with the plethora of young talent at LB? I think Ulysees and dirty red both deserve spots at least at this point. I wouldn’t try to stash Ulysees on the PS unless he really regresses. Dirty red is a solid backup and a special teams ace. We tried keeping Thomas last year by keeping 5 ILB do we do that again?

You have three inside linebackers that are locks. But I could see them keeping 5 again sure.

Steelers took barron to upgrade at speed and coverage. They didn't know they would be able to grab Bush. (hee heee grab bush) in the draft.

Barron replaces Burnett role in this defense and will much better at it. The new “base” package will probably be the nickel, as most teams are doing. Vince will be the 3-4 on 1st downs and situational blitzes.

I think Barron may be a very good player, but I do think he was signed as insurance so they didn't HAVE to take an ILB. It was no sure thing they were trading up and Bush was not goint to make it to the Steelers pick. Voila Barron is a Steeler. I'm sure they can find a role in some alignments, but he is redundant to Devin Bush.

if the team hadnt signed Barron there would be plenty of deserved criticism, you never know what will happen on draft day neither if a rook pans out or not

Vince is good against the run and a good blitzer. Bush will play almost every down unless getting a breather. Barron will probably be in on passing downs with Vince in on most 1st downs or more obvious run situations. Not sure if Vince will get to show off his blitzing if he is not in on passing downs but we shall see. He is terrible in coverage and I think we all recognize that. Hopefully the coaches do as well.

Maybe Devin can teach Mr. Layne how to grab bush. Once you get the technique down pat, the world changes and don't be afraid to stick your head in there.

This is about right. But how often do we really play base 3-4 on 1st down?
