What happened in 2006?

If anything look at game 1 of 2006---Porters reaction to Cowher. Cowher didnt mail in the season cause of his wife, in fact I recall Sweet Titties Wille Parker having a few good games that season. The game against New Orleans comes to mind. Ben's appendicitis, motorcycle accident mixed with an emotional Super Bowl hangover did them in. That 2006 team had talent, I think fatigue and injuries did them in.

And nobody is perfect. Ben made a mistake, but the team trudged on. Last game of the season? Misery loves company. KO'd the Bungles hopes out of the playoffs. That next season Tomlin took the reigns and led that team to a playoff berth, very next season 6 time champions. Teams are not always gonna win championships. Doesnt mean you dont quit on them. Steelers, Pens, Pirates, UGA, Naliers. Those are my teams. I like to see them win cause those guys work hard. But just like anything else in life. **** happens

Hey, It's just like Hines said...they went into the season and got a beating. But they finished like champions. (OR something like that.)

At least when the chips were down and they had nothing to play for (2-6) they found a way to right the ship, recover, and play the way they should. After all, some teams would hang it up and punt hoping for a high draft pick.

Also, don't forget the beating our franchise QB took in the off season care of his carelessness.

And also, yes...why worry about it after 10 years?

Coach Cowhers wife was dieing of cancer. I think that was the biggest issue he faced and Ben had a motorcycle wreck and appendicitis. So maybe your analysis is a touch flawed.

DING! DING!! DING!!! We have a winner!

Please list source link to WP stating this, otherwise it's only a fleeting memory. One could argue, injuries, SOS, and just "bullseye" on back of World Champions could have had some something to do with it.

Still waiting for that link from Parker.......

In addition to a motorcycle wreck, Ben got KTFO in Atlanta with a terrible concussion, we lost in OT. Couldn't contain Vick. Then the next week Ben played in Oakland when he had no business playing and we **** the bed. That was a rough season. Got Timmons and Woodley in the next draft, Won XLIII, lost XLV. I'd say that 8-8 year was worth it.

XLV was in the bag. Mendenhalls fumble just took us out. Shockingly that loss didnt hurt as bad. I guess more so cause my neighbor is a Packers fan and isnt a douche win or lose

I never said Cowher lost intentionally; he is a competitor and wants to win at everything.

But he was a "lame duck" coach, and players knowing their future wasn't involved with him will not give that extra 1% of effort needed and is the difference between winning and losing.

Cowher himself might have tried that 1% less himself, but it's not like he made an effort to lose - never said that.

It just won't ever get old to you huh pop?

I had that same reaction in that super bowl. **** you Mendy. They lost this time? Meh. Ok. Didn't hurt nearly as bad

One of my best friends is a packer's fan. He is the decent type fan and loyal to his packers forever. I have several friends like this. Wasn't so bad losing that one. They were all good about it and even complimentary of the game. Way way different than seachicken fans or the excuse making MASShole fan.

Salute the nation

Giants. Won every game except the Super Bowl.

Thought that was 2007. Sorry should have looked it up beforeposting

I only remember it clearly because me and the current Mrs. Burgundy had gone to Watertown, NY that weekend to see my daughter's concert at school (my kids lived with my ex at the time), left that morning figuring we'd be home in time for the game. Instead the NY Thruway was closed at Buffalo due to an impending blizzard, we tried a back way and found the blizzard ourselves, and ended up turning around and watching the game at the Red Roof Inn in Henrietta, NY. I have a 4x4 but the problem was that you couldn't see the friggen' road. Took another route straight south the next day all the way to Harrisburg to get around the blizzard and PA Turnpike home. Upstate NY had over 8 FEET of snow by the end of the week and Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel was camped out at a restaurant I used to go to all the time.

Somewhere I don't follow. The Colts won the SB in Feb 2007 (06 season). Pats lost in Feb 2008 (07 season).

I think you both meant the same thing but you confused Blitz, Ron.

Cowher didn't say he was retiring so how was he a lame duck?

Because he had only his current year under contract, and there were no talks of re-upping. Both sides knew a new deal wasn't happening.

You would never let a coach who just won a Super Bowl hanging without a new contract with just the current year under contract. Everyone knew what that meant, and no new deal ever surfaced.

Don't you think everyone knew what that meant? Show me a coach who just won a Super Bowl operating with only the current year under contract, if the coach was going to stay.

It just doesn't ever happen.

I just never understood the "Cowher mailed it in" theory pertaining to that season.

If he had truly half assed it, that team would not have gone 6-2 after the 2-6 start. If the head coach was truly disinterested, that team probably would have totally collapsed after the terrible start.

Ben's health was the difference.

The Steelers never mail it in. They also went 8-8 after the 0-4 start a few years later.

I thought it was kind of obvious.

Well, no additional years on contract.....no contract talks......tell me when a coach coming off a Super Bowl season doesn't get extended with only current year under contract.

Steelerfan81, tell me when this happens if the coach is coming back. I am all ears.
