I say we take the money and go to a lake in Minnesota. We can rent a boat and hire us some hookers, everyone remember to wear purple!

His salary comes off the books for this and next year.
Steelers have to decide whether to take the signing bonus hit this year of 4.5M or spread it out over this and next year at 2.25M each year. (Post june 1 designation)
If we take it all this year we save 3.75M if we spread it out we save 6M this year and have a $2.25M dead money hit next year.
New luxury offices for upper-management, chauffer & limo for Coach Shades, jacuzzi add-on to Colbert's office, complete remodel of St. Vincent dorms with luxury suites for veterans with XXL beds, diamond-embedded toilets and satin sheets. The list goes on...What do the Steelers spend the Troy money on?
Benapalooza?
Really?
Troy was never going to play for the 2015 Steelers. So I don't see how his retirement "freed up" any money.
Yeah, but retiring saves way more space than cutting him...
It was Never a foregone conclusion that he was going to retire.
Quite the opposite actually.

How much exactly did it free up? Anyone have the current cap dollars for this year?
try this
What happens next will determine when the Steelers and Polamalu decide to process the paperwork for retirement. If it occurs before June 1, the Steelers will gain $3.75 million in cap space and have Polamalu count for $4.5 million in dead money. If they wait until after June 1 then they will gain $6 million in 2015 and take a $2.25 million dead money charge in each of the next two seasons.

Just depends if they want to sign someone worth signing.
June 1st creates some new options. Cuts will happen and there may be an opportunity to hire someone after the draft. Though I was initially speaking about trading for a player during the draft, as we did with Bettis. Any disgruntled, underachieving, talented OLBs or CBs in the league?
June 1st hasn't been a "thing" in many years. In the old days, players were cut after June 1st because it was treated differently under the salary cap. Nowadays, teams can cut guys in March but designate them (for cap purposes) as "June 1st cuts". That's what we did last year with Woodley. This was part of the new CBA because it's cruel to keep a guy on the roster when he's not in the team's plans...in the old days that player got cut loose on June 1st when teams had already filled their needs through the draft and free agency.
No good players are going to be cut after June 1st. It's possible some will get cut after the draft if a team happens to draft someone that makes a veteran expendable, but I wouldn't count on that.
