What Can We Realistically Expect From Najee Harris This Season?

It’s no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers have had trouble running the ball over the last few seasons. You can probably shift the blame on multiple places; the play calling, the offensive line play, personnel, etc. Whatever it is, the team seems committed to getting back to the ground and pound team they were once known for being. This was exemplified by the drafting of Najee Harris in the first round of the NFL Draft this year.

Harris was the first running back off the board in this year’s draft, and many feel he is one of the most exciting running back prospects in the last few years. He has a rare combination of size, speed, and athleticism that you don’t see very often. He was the guy the team wanted if he fell to the pick, and they did not hesitate to take him. This seemed to be the first step to revamping the run game.

There has been some doubts about the offensive line play heading into this season however, with the departures of Maurkice Pouncey and David DeCastro, there has been concern about the state of the offensive line, and if there will be any running lanes open. So what does this mean for Harris?

Well although with a bad offensive line, sledding can definitely be tough, an exceptional back can sometimes lead you to take that with a grain of salt.

For instance, New York Giants running back, Saquon Barkley ran behind a line that was ranked by PFF as the 21st ranked offensive line his rookie year. That’s in the bottom half of the league. How many yards did Barkley have behind this line? Just 1,307 and 11 touchdowns. Both career highs. Not to bad from where I’m standing. This just goes to show with a special back and a semblance of a line, things can happen.

I’m not saying to expect this from Harris, but I’m not saying not to either. Barkley is an elite running back in the league and one of the best prospects at the position in recent memory, but Harris is no slouch. He is one of the more talked about draft picks at the position since Barkley himself, he could arguably be the most talented picked in the first round since 2018 Barkley was. His pedigree in both the run and pass game makes it hard not to have high expectations for the upcoming season. Mix that with his work ethic (he has been told to leave the practice facility after watching film for hours), and I think he will provide an instant boost to this Pittsburgh offense.

Statistically, I think Harris should reach the 1,000-yard mark rushing in his debut campaign, and well over that in total yards. The talent the team has in the passing game , and with new Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada taking over the play calling, Harris should find himself set up for success.

My final prediction for Harris’s 17 game stat line is: 1,190 yards rushing, 55 catches for 530 yards and 12 total touchdowns (8 rushing, 4 receiving). This may seem lofty, but with an extra game now added to the schedule and Harris’s talent, I believe this is achievable, and a realistic expectation for Harris’s highly anticipated rookie season.

I'll be the homer that I always am...

Najee will be a beast baring injury. The last two years were the worst OL's that Bama has had in years and guess who still pounded the competition??? You guessed it - Najee.

I like Barkley but you cannot compare the two RB's. The comparisons to Lev Bell are more accurate and either way - our offense will be waaaaay more effective with him in the backfield.

I foresee some wildcat w/ Najee flanking and JaySam behind the OL - that's killer!!!

I expect to see our offensive line open up some holes for him to run.

I expect the offense to implement more play action.

I think we need to take more snaps under center this year so teams don't always know we're passing.

He should rush for 1K yards and 10+ TDs.

Just realized we have 17 games and not 16, he should be getting 1,200+ yards unless they're going to divvy up the rushing load. The 17th game is really going to wear down and shorten the careers of running backs.

If J-sam is taking snaps then I fear we are in trouble.

240 carries 4.0 average 960 yards rushing with 8 tds. 50 receptions 9.0 per catch 450 receiving yards with 2 tds.

I think those are pretty realistic expectations if he stays healthy.

80 yds rushing per game = 1,360 on the season. not out of the question.

Greater than 110.36 combined yards per game which happens to be LeVeon Bell career average.

We answered this in another post about the same topic. Barring injury, I can easily see him getting 1,300+ yards from scrimmage and 8+ (and very possibly 10+) TD's..

Didn't they just have three linemen drafted?

I think Harris has great potential, but it's not like he was running behind the 2020 Steelers OL or anything.

He did well in the wildcat when called upon. Don't forget that Coach Canada was his OC in college at NC State...that's where he was used at every skill position on offense!!!

I'm onlu going out of memory but under Fitchner he did well first couple times then didn't do so well partly due to defense knowing what was coming and J-sam can't or couldn't pass. Canada may very well pull the surprise but BEN should be taking the plays of somehow someone who is not going to tip off the defense. Maybe BEN and J-sam in shotgun but direct snap to J-sam. Something anything to generate positive yards.

ALL GOOD

Yes and Landon was the best of the three...the OL was not outstanding as it usually is...

I’m an optimist but I just cannot be for this 2021 season. I’m also a realist and what I see is a 39 year old wobbly QB with no mobility behind a line consisting of two weak OT’s that are backups at best, center could Finney, the rookie Green who has like 4 games as a center at Illinois, or the other mook. Not too encouraging!
I like Big Dot and think he can be pro bowl caliber in time. The other guard Trai Turner signed from the Charges is ? do to his health. Can he stay healthy and can he return to pro bowl caliber?
I think they didn’t do enough to solidify this OL at all and Ben will pay for it.
Defense will fare better with my concern at CB and OLB. What will Haden look like? Can Nelson be replaced? Can they replace Hilton? Can they get the necessary production from Highsmith and Ingram to compensate for the Bud loss? Lots of ????
Then you have Tomlin to contend with again and his mistakes and lack of adjustments, etc.
Factor in all three other AFC North teams are even better. Not confident this season.
My prediction is 6-11 and did I say the schedule is fricking brutal?
