What are your top 5 corners in 2019 draft?

I don't think Isiah Johnson is a day 1 guy, but he helped himself today

4.4 40 - 3rd fastest time
36.5 Vertical - middle of the pack
133 Broad Jump - 3rd longest
6.81 3 cone - 5th fastest
4.06 20 yard shuttle - 2nd fastest

I agree with this, and you left out one of his best traits. He's tall. His 40 time and 20 yard shuttle are impressive. Usually taller players are not this quick, but he is. I like him as a back end classic center field type of free safety, or a zone corner with + match ups in the red zone, on 50.50 balls, or for sideline defense. He's probably not a good jam / bump and run guy, but I think he can run with the speed WR's and match up well vs the taller ones.

He looks a little slim, so run defense / tackling are not his thing and he might be a little easy to block. Not a day one guy even though he has day one work out numbers. I would not be shocked to see him picked later in round two. I love him in round three, and think he would be steal material in round 4.

This corner class is grade C to C- to me, which is to his advantage.

40 times is the product of the media. Straight line speed is a small percentage of the game. The position drills are a truer indicator of game ability. For the DBs today there were a lot of guys who ran well in the 40 and looked horrible in the drills. Others who ran average in the 40 and showcased exceptionally fluid hips and change of direction skills.

I would have to say Greedy Williams looked absolutely terrible in the position drills and probably was glad he had cramps so as to shut it down after the first couple drills. It was so bad, even Sanders was commenting on it, and Williams worked out at his academy. Unless he does well at his pro-day he could fall to the latter third of the first.

Baker, Murphy, Mullen and Love were all very smooth in their drills. Others who looked very fluid in the hips and change of directions included Oruwariye Fields, Long, Johnson and Layne. They all helped their stock.

Joejuan Williams, has a horrible day however, which was disappointing.

he is 6'2 and 208# not exactly light, he had no problem making tackles in college. He could attack harder, but if he got a hold of a runner, he usually got them down. He played bump and run well, but would get in trouble with his hands instead of trusting his speed to stay with the WR. His drawback is lack of experience and some technique flaws in coverage.....which should be easily correctable with good coaching

I would be happy with him in round 2 but absolutely love him in round 3...anything after that is an out right steal

If the ILBs are gone and Baker, Murphy and AO are gone, I’m trading back to get more picks and grab Wilson and Johnson and a WR. The triangle numbers for IJ are awesome. Shuttle and cone sold me.

I don’t want Greedy AT ALL. He soft on the run and doesn’t tackle. What little he did in the position drills showed he has awful technique.

Yeah there is enough on Greedy to make me think twice. Especially at 20.

"let's take the fast guy at CB"
are you crazy? we can get an undersized, slow, indecisive LB from the PAC-12 conference now!
blank stares all around; phone rings
"hello?"
hey guys - take the kicker. i said we should have drafted Mike Dickson last year and he's ....

"With the 175th pick in the sixth round, the Pittsburgh Steelers select Rick Gamboa, LB, University of Colorado"

thanks, Cooch
POST OF THE YEAR!!!
Joe Haden ran a 4.57 and he turned out ok.

My point EXACTLY - which is why I still think that Baker is the most logical pick. You guys know I watch A LOT of SEC ball and Deandre Baker is the TRUTH.

My list:
1. Deandre Baker
2. Byron Murphy
3. Greedy Williams
4. Julian Love
5. Jamel Dean/Amani Oruwariye

From what I read, Baker was a shutdown cornerback. Wexell had a pretty good article on some of the DBs and one Steelers source mentioned the Washington safety would be the guy he'd keep an eye on.

There were comments that Baker has 'many Deion Sanders skills'...that sold me and I watched him shutdown his side of the field in every game last season...

I like the CBs in round one. I don’t like how we don’t seem able to develop CB talent.

NFL combine: Steelers rethinking their approach to drafting corners

For years, the Steelers coveted size and tackling ability in their corners, but Colbert said college players that showed ball-hawking skills will be valued more as the team evolves with changes in the league.

“The game has changed,” Colbert said. “Look, we sacked the quarterback at a very good rate, but our takeaways are not very good at all. It’s really reflective on the players we have back there. What we want to look at, what we want to value looking forward, is let’s value the takeaway-capable guys who have shown they’ve been able to do that in college.

For a team that covets tackling ability, we are not very good at it, and don't seem to know how to coach it. At least they realize that they need to do something differently. I suggest a new coach and close look at the GM, but here is their take -

Since 2015, the Steelers have picked six defensive backs in the first four rounds of the draft. They have combined for 11 interceptions over the past four seasons. The Steelers had just eight interceptions last season, their lowest total since 1940. That’s not nearly good enough for a defense that continues to struggle in turnover ratio.

Four of those six defensive backs were corners, and none of them finished last season as a starter. Artie Burns, the 2016 first-round pick, was benched midway through the season. Cameron Sutton, a third-round pick in 2017, played sparingly as a reserve. And Senquez Golson and Doran Grant, the second- and fourth-round picks in 2015, never played for the Steelers and are out of the NFL altogether.

As a result of those draft misses, the Steelers are expected to use an early pick, perhaps their first-round selection, on a cornerback this year.

So as a result of our awful early round CB picks, we will make an early round CB pick. I agree that we need to do it, but not confident we will get a different result.

That has been my position.
