Watt skipping mandatory mini camp per Schefter

The Steelers have always been cheapskates, its well known enough even the former players are comfortable saying it.
Then they break the bank for DK and cry when TJ wants to get paid.
The last time the steelers were in this situation, Watt told his agent enough is enough and signed the deal, a deal that made him the highest paid defensive player in the league.

And so far, the only thing the coaches and front office have said, is that negotiations are on going, and that they want to make TJ a one helmet guy.

No one is crying, the team is not cheap (minkah was the highest paid safety, Ben signed a few massive deals, AB got to WR money). Calling a team cheapskates while including a statement about paying a historic deal to a WR they traded for is literally contradicting yourself.

Pittsburgh pays the market rate for their star players. At times I think they pay to much. The home town discount scenerio is a myth.

They made Troy the highest paid safety as well, Faneca was the highest or one of the highest paid.

I believe they made Pouncey the highest paid center as well. Some people have a hard time letting forever ago bygones by bygones. They learned from the Woodson and Chad Brown situations A LONG time ago.

There are cap hits and their are also cash outlays, don’t think the Steelers rank very high in the latter but I could be wrong. They also don’t like giving guaranteed money past the first year for non-QBs, Watt broke that mold a few years ago.

Id give Watt Gareett money over three not 4. I don't care if he Retires a Steeler. If he still has something left in three he can go somewhere else if they can't come to a number. Even Troy's last contract didn't end well.

Let Watt play out his contract. If he has a great year....resign him.....

If he doesn't have a great year....resign him at a discount.

If he doesn't resign....franchise him. Work a trade out if you can't work a deal out.

Omar needs to work the system in place. Get maximum value from the product.....at the best price or work a trade out.

We have won nothing since Watt has been here. We probably can get a Tomlinship without him. Maybe even a playoff win.

Watt is lucky to be a Steeler.

So this article(from our home page) states that the Steelers told Watt this during negotiations for his last extension. I wonder who told him that if true?

A. Rooney
B. Colbert
C. Tomlin
D. No one

🤔

NICE post and use of HOME PAGE article. Thank you SIR

I think Colbert probably actually spoke the words, but be rest assured it came from the group (Rooney being hesitant) you have listed (they strategized together).

I don’t blame TJ one bit for trying to capitalize on his skills. This franchise makes a ton of money and they have a coach who is way way overly compensated in relations to his production record of mediocre Tomlinships.

I hope this gets resolved as the team doesn’t need the distraction it will bring.

This one is going to shock a lot of people...Watt has only played in 4 playoff games. He has 8 tackles, 3 of those for losses, 5 QB hits, 3 pass deflections, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, 1 TD. For the lack of creativity the coaching staff has, and teams knowing he's the guy you need to stop. It's not like he's invisible...

His first playoff game was his rookie year, didn't see another one for 3 years.
I guess, and this is my opinion, TJ's post-season performance has been below the line when we get there.

I fully agree that the coaches need to scheme and create better opportunities for him but TJ is all world - so I need to see him create more opportunities on his own...

Would love to see that and agree....but when 3 players are blocking you in various ways on every play others need to step up. Players and the coaches.

The past couple of seasons late in the season, Watt seems to disappear, usually starting around mid December. He doesn’t seem very impactful in these late season games that matter.

Injury has been a part of that, but also add in wear down. Continually battle 2-3 guys wears more than just a one on one.

Hopefully this season they realize the blitz is their friend. Move him a little, but bring that 5th guy as that will slow the double and triple teams on him.

My issue is Watt and been a true professional every step of the way. He plays hard, doesnt complain, stays out of trouble, and has single handily won games for us. We bring in other guys and give them big money but are reluctant to make Watt the highest paid at his position. I know he had somewhat of a down year, but teams are scheming around him and we are not doing anything to counter it. No guy is going to beat double / triple teams consistently. We do not move him around, blitz, and are constantly outnumbered up front. The $$ should be there for Watt. We are not paying a quarterback big $$ anytime soon, Minkah is gone, we dont have a big #2 WR contract, and Heyward will probably retire very soon. Watt is a old-school type player that the Steelers used to be. I say pay the man and work around the contract.

i'd pay the man and he'd have been paid by now. he's worked his *** off, stays out of the headlines and ... even more importantly - setting the example that if a guy produces and continues to elevate his play he'll be rewarded HERE.

however, business is business and if someone offered a similar player and/or multiple high draft picks, I'd listen.

I saw a rumor of Nolan Smith and a pick for TJ. That's the bare minimum I'd go.

Steelers would receive: Smith and a third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft (via the Jets).

Eagles would receiver: Watt.

The problem is the gist of the article "He deserves it as he is a clear future Hall of Famer, and he has had a major impact on the Steelers". Nothing about the present, which is what anyone's value should be based on. As some on this board have pointed out, he has disappeared late in the season. The fact that Garrett got a lucrative contract and Parsons may get an even better one is irrelevant. Why should we let the Cleveland Browns or Dallas Cowboy stupidity influence us?

Garrett and watt were drafting the same year.
Every single year the question of who’s the best edge is debated between Garrett and watt.

It’s no surprise that TJ wants to top Garrett.
And I don’t blame him.

It’ll get done, and conveniently enough, they have about that much cash they need to spend still this season.

This is really not a conversation lol.

When TJ got fuucked by the NFL with helmet-smasher winning DPOY, the Steelers should have re-upped him then as highest paid Edge. It would have been clearly supportive, classy......and cheaper.
