Washington Agrees to Contract Extension

How's the best blocking TE in the league who also has soft hands in the passing game only potential in your eyes?

57 receptions in 3 seasons. Pct of snaps played per season: 48, 52, 57.

Is that worth $42M or are you hoping those numbers increase greatly?

If it's the latter, and you know it is, then guess what your paying for?

How many snaps % do you think he'd had if he didn't get injured ?

The salary cap continues to rise each and ever year.

The old wages scenarios of said positions are increasing as well.

That 5-7 mil dollar tight end of 5 years ago is now a 9-12 mil dollar wage.

The one stat that blows all this away is the fact that he’s only scored 2 TD’s. In his career. That’s not a misprint. 2.
Now I’m not going to blame it all on Darnell. For all the reasons we all know about. But like it or not,he’s played in 50 games. And yes I get the blocking and Yada,Yada,Yada. But 2 TD’s. 10+million per.

So I’m with Windy. It had better be about potential. Because his numbers don’t cut it for 10+ million. I certainly expect more production. By the way. I zoned in on him quite a bit last season. For a guy that is supposedly all about blocking he missed a ton last year. Yes he makes the highlight reels because people love to yap about his size and the way he can toss little cornerbacks. I am hoping fora lot more consistency.

This isn’t me ******** on him. I think he can do it,and I sure hope our new offensively minded coaching can put him in a much better position to succeed for our team.

Compared to Eric Green, which he often is, who had 15 TDs in 31 games in his first three seasons.

I loved Eric. When he signed with Miami I was so pissed off. Yancey exploded for over 1300 yards when Eric left that season.
I would have loved to see them on the field together. When Eric left in free agency he signed at that time a record deal for TE’s.
6 years - 12 million.

At least we can all agree that JPJ performed as one of the NFL's top CBs and should be appropriately compensated to reflect both his achievements and his expected upward trajectory, although their is not much higher achievement runway because he is close to the NFL peak now.

Coaching and offensive scheme used ERIC in a way better scenario than our previous coaching staff / scheme are using Darnell.

Hard to compare the two apples for apples as that scheme has a lot to do with it.

I’m with Steelmann, I have faith in the young man.

I will have faith in the scheme until proven otherwise.

Washington is worth it solely on his blocking... it gives you a weapon in situations most guys only use a sixth olineman as an eligible guy, but who is only there to block...

Also remember, we were forcing targets that should have gone to muth and washington to Jonnu Smith... basically every play designed to go to a TE first read was given to Smith.. so both of their numbers were artificially suppressed

PFF kind of backs up Steelman's assessment of DW's blocking. Last year his run block grade was 73, pass block 68. Both above average, but far from the Winged God of Blocking Tight Ends reputation he gets from fans who react only to highlights of him mowing down a guy he's got 150 lbs on.

By his 3rd NFL season, Heath Miller's run blocking graded at 83, pass blocking 70.

Also, in HM's first three years he nabbed 120 passes and 18 TD.

Those numbers are in a **** offensive system with **** coaches including **** offensive coordinator bullied by a **** head coach who doesn't like throwing the ball over the middle of the field as if it's littered with Troy Polomalus and Ronnie Lotts poised to steal the ball away from him. You can call the payday "potential" or even "plans" if you want to put some positivity into this conversation. But none of us will know if the money makes sense until we see what the Steelers envision for the young lad, AND if he performs as expected. Obviously, the Steelers believe he's about to have one hell of a productive season, and I certainly hope they are correct.
