By: Zach Herbaugh SteelerNation.com   I recently released an article ranking the top wide receivers in Pittsburgh Steelers history. Attempting to rank any position will create debate, but a position as prestigious as wide receiver in Steelers history obviously opened a can of worms I was not expecting. I ranked the Steelers all-time leader in […]

My reply from our Facebook page:
Brown was a more gifted receiver and an all time great for what he did but he was never as complete a player as Ward. If I am building a team I take Ward over AB all day. Ward was a winner. AB was a talented whiner. I take rings and total team play with steady production over AB and his team destroying antics any day.

Ward>Brown

Me too. SB rings and SB MVP aside ..... forget about indiv. accolades. Hines was just a better team player. Did whatever was necessary to win. HW also played for the Chin when The Bus and Fast Willie were featured. Yeah, AB played with Lev, but Tomlin and his offenses were more passing centric. Under Cowher's last 3 years, Ben had over 400 attempts once - Tomlin's 1st 3 years - over 400 attempts every year and most years after that. Over 500 attempts 5 times, over 600 twice. The stillers just didn't throw as much with Cowher - hence HWs numbers are down. But you can't argue what he bought to the TEAM - catching and blocking and his winning attitude vs. ABs, me-me-me, cancerous lockerroom attitude. Way more to look at here than just stats. Just my $.02.

Excellent write up ZACH and correct conclusion.

Remeber little chest stole 22 million dollars and still had contract time left when he bolted. THAT's the PRICE the STEELERS where willing to pay to get rid of him. How is that for a legacy.............. "RED HOT POKER time

Brown is the better player and it isn't even a question. He was recognized as the best in the league and discussed as potentially the second best receiver of all time. He's also one of the best players in franchise history. With that said, Ward is the greater player for the organization. When it comes to talent/the better player list, Brown is at the top and when you're breaking down the greatest Steelers of all time, Ward is ahead of Brown. At least that's how I view the two.

Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu are my favorite players.

AB is supremely talented but Hines is smarter, tougher and made a bigger impact on the game.

Boomin'

Browns actions since Oakland has made me re-think my position...I clearly stated after we traded Brown away, that STILL Brown was better by far...But I was so, so, so, so wrong....I was so ******* wrong.....Here is how I came to that conclusion.....FINALLY

Ward is like the girl next door GF who loves you, respects you, & makes you a better person. You marry & grow old with her...Oh & your Mom & Dad & all your friends love her

Brown is like the hot *** GF who after awhile turns psycho & that *** & boobs just ain't worth the trouble. So you finally get tired of her ****, call the cops & get a restraining order...Anything good she ever did, was erased by all her bullshit. You cannot even remember any good times, just BULLSHIT....

All your buddies told you that Psycho ***** booty just ain't worth it. But you didn't believe them until one day you say to yourself, **** THAT CRAZY *****....Your Momma hates her, your Daddy wants to slap her, & your sister finally kicks her ***...

Character plays a big role in how you remember someone...

AB was a better pure receiver but Ward is better for your team. Hines had his diva moments too but not nearly as bad as AB.

Ward is the better player and it isn't even a question. He was recognized as the best in the league and is the greatest Steeler receiver of all time. He's also one of the best players in franchise history when you add his blocking skills.. With that said, Brown had ben in his prime and many more weapons on the offense. Plus its become a throwing league much more than when Kordy was throwing to Hines.
When it comes to talent/the better player list, Ward is at the top and when you're breaking down the greatest Steelers of all time, Ward is ahead of Brown. At least that's how I view the two.

Stallworth is the greatest Steeler receiver of all time, IMOP. I would take Ward over Brown every time. Ward is probably my fav Steelers of all time.

I agree about Stallworth. I'd take him over either of the other two. He just happened to play in an era where they didn't throw much, including his first four seasons, when defensive backs could literally beat your *** all the way down the field.

Brown was on a career trajectory that probably would have put him at #1 but his ego, narcissism and self destructive tendencies blew it all up in a relative instant. Ward on the other hand was a great WR and the consummate team player and clubhouse leader. Hines Ward over Mr. big ego and it isn't even close.

Here are 2 cool things to know about Hines Ward, that not all Steeler fans know:

1) He could never get an ACL injury. He was born without them. Didn't know it until his medical exam pre draft. It dropped him to the 3rd round because of it. His MCLs and PCLs are wider and helped stabilize the knee.

2) After winning the Superbowl MVP, he went on a trip to South Korea with his Korean mother. His mother had been shunned by having a child with a black soldier. Being a half Korean in Korea, means you are discriminated against and not seen as a human. Ward helped to break that stereotype, and was honored as a hero. That moment was huge in changing the culture on how half Koreans are treated. His mother was also given an official apology and is honored for raising such a fine example of a human being, outside of the country.

Yep knew about that. Which makes you like Hines even more as he never sat on the problem and whined about it he rose above and excelled. That is how you beat racism become better than what ignorance you are facing.

I wonder what Ben would say?

Ward is a better overall player. You could say at their best, Brown was a better receiver.

I would guess BEN being the diplomat that he is would not pick one over the other but instead give BOTH their dues and move on. They both have their stregnths and many are selling BROWN as a huge difference in ability when that is NOT trhe case. What Brown may have over Hines in receiver ability, WARD more than makes up for in football play. I would take WARD over brown anyday and especially on Sunday's unless we happen to playing on a Thursday or a Monday, then those days for sure as well.

All things being equal, I take Ward every day without hesitation. Ward didn't run the wrong route when not happy, Ward could stay in and improve the run game, Ward gave 100% on every play no matter if he got the ball or not, Ward didn't sulk and mope off the field when teammates made big plays. It's not even close. If Ward played in the offense AB did in his prime with Ben, Wards numbers would be right there with AB and maybe better because he wouldn't take plays off or run different routes.
**** AB
