McPhee or Byron Maxwell would be great, but both will probably end up signing for more than what the Steelers would/could offer.

That's what I had in mind. He's only 28 and had 10 sacks last season. His upper body injury this season was pretty significant, though, especially for a pass rusher.

Absolutely a concern, but I think I'd rather risk money on Orakpo for one year than a long-term deal to keep Worilds.

Off the list, I would re-sign Ben Tate provided he has spent a night in the box to make his mind right and draft another one. LB's I like Feeney amd Skuta if we can afford them and let Worilds walk if another team offers a dollar more (but Tombert will be stupid and re-sign him). CB's I re-sign McCain for sure and I like Fletcher from the Eagles. Revis of course but he's probably got too high a price tag.

I'm interested in Knowshon Moreno as a nice 3-down backup to Bell. I think he would hold up to a season with only 100 touches and he's really good at running AND receiving which would fit in our system. He has to pass the medical checks though off his ACL injury but since that happened in October he should be okay by next season (10 months).

Coming off that injury he's probably minimum salary too so bringing him in costs us nothing unless he makes the team.

Another option to me would be Darren McFadden. He's also a capable weapon in both the run game and pass game and is big enough block. If I can get him for Blount type money I would be tempted on that.


At OLB, it obviously comes down to what we do with Worilds. I would really look at Brandon Graham instead of Worilds for that type of money but it sounds like he needs some convincing to be a LOLB. I like Orakpo as a talent, but he's missed 24 out of his last 48 games and investing starter money into a player that isn't on the field would be hard to swallow. With our lack of depth, you need someone that is going to play for sure (or at least as sure as possible).

I would also really like to find a backup swing OLB to add into the mix and that could be O'Brien Schoolfield. Maybe in a Moats type roll to play both OLB spots. He's coming off two healthy seasons and looks to be regaining his form as a pass rusher in Seattle. He would be a nice compliment to our special teams and provide some nice knowledge of defensive systems (playing for both Todd Bowles and Dan Quinn).

At CB there are a lot to choose from and it might come down to cost. Brandon Flowers is capable in zone schemes and is a physical corner. Tramon Williams has shown some nice man-to-man skills in the past. I've always liked Davon House since college and he might be a nice depth signing. Also some high draft choices that have a lot of playing time under their belt: Kyle Wilson, Mike Jenkins, Kareem Jackson, Patrick Robinson, Darius Butler (has the light bulb finally gone on for him??).

How we handle this cornerback group and who we pick at what price will tell me a LOT on how Tombert is evaluating CB talent. Remember, Colbert's background is not college scouting, it's pro scouting (that's what he did in Detroit) and picking free agents is almost as much of a crap shoot as the college draft itself. We probably need at least TWO free agent signings in the secondary, maybe THREE if Polamalu retires. I think when 2015 is over and we look back at this list and see how Tombert did and at what cost is an important evaluation tool for how well they are working together.

Yes Brandon Graham I think would be a upgrade, a lateral move perhaps at least. But you are right I am thinking two OLBers and a SS and CB.

I like your RB options especially Moreno as he could do it all as you mentioned.

Orakpo should be able to bring in at a cheap price due to injury, maybe similar to the Moats price range, with the potential to be a upgrade over just depth provided he stays healthy.

Nobody mentioned will break the bank, but smarter moves than bottom feeding IMO. Stay away from the benched Cam Thomas's of free agency and thinking we can polish a turd. But the slightly better talent. Which could plug holes in needed depth areas.

Even though last years frree agency brought mixed results it was better than standing still. And did bring ok corner play, better safety range, and depth at OLBer. So if Colbert just picks Blount type players without the personality issues. The Steelers could be close to surprising a few.

For me it is this years free agency over the draft that will be critical, not that Bryant, and a few others weren't much needed contributors.

Because one free agent corner one Olber one SS one RB could very well hold the key to next seasons success.
