I think we're in a great position to trade down and out of the 1st round.

I think that the jags could easily take a QB if there's someone they like, the Pats* have to be in the market at some point too so jumping back in to the 1st round at #28 makes a lot of sense if you're trying to get in front of those guys.

This draft sounds like there are 15 or so top tier guys and then beauty is in the eye of the beholder down to 60-75. I'd love to have two second round picks and add a high third rounder. That makes someone like Mason Rudolph much less of a luxury pick and allows us to go ILB/DB/NT.

If a player doesn’t unexpectedly fall, I’m usually in favor of trading down. I think if you look back, trading down most often pays off. I don’t remember the last time the Steelers did it. It seems like they have their draft board in place and immediately take whoever is at the top and still available - no waiting to see if another team wants to trade up.

I said in another thread the Steelers likely try to recoup their 4th round pick if guys they deem worthy of #28 and are at need positions are gone. I think if Jax wants a QB and give us #29 and #129 we are coming out way ahead. If Pats move up and give us #31 and #136 it’s pretty even. Or Indy gives us #36, #104 and #178 it’s pretty even but that’s a decent drop back. I think Cleveland and the giants get their QB in the first and I don’t want to drop back to the next team after Indy in the second whom needs a QB unless it involved a 2019 first or second round pick.

If Evans/LVE are gone and no one falls, I would look to trade down to 32-36.
I will go with the Giants at 34. We trade our 1st and 5th(2nd pick of the round) for
the Giants 34 and 65.

2(giants pick): Sony Michele RB
2b: Jessie Bates FS
3a(giants pick):Darius Leonard ILB
3b: Anthony MIller WR
5: Oren Burks ILB
7a: Keith Frazier NT
7b: Cole Madison G

Colbert has not traded down often. This year, he might if the top ILB's are off the board. The player I hope is on the board is Lamar Jackson. NO WAY should be draft him, but a team who needs a quarterback say Miami 11th overall, Washington 13th overall are SOL as Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield and Allen will be gone by pick #10.

One of these teams in theory could offer us a deal if they like Jackson.

Suppose Miami, offered their 2nd, 3rd and 4th in exchange for our 1st and 7th?

We get pick # 42, #73, and #119 and Trade pick #28, and #220.

Would this be worth it?

With this many QBs with high grades. Someone is falling.

Man the last time they traded down in round 1 was to get Hampton I think. They've traded up to get Troy and Holmes. I'm old my memory is probably off haha

If a linebacker they want is still there, they will run to podium. If they consider moving back teams with 2 second round picks would be good targets.
Indy might want a RB at #28.

42 (480) and 73 (225) are worth more than our 28 (660) pick

if a QB is there at 28, I'd be on the phone with Arizona. I'd be asking for their 2nd (430), 3rd (195) and 5th (30.2).
Value-wise, it would be a good deal for both teams.
We could move back and get two extra picks.

Mason Rudolph, a target in roudn one, or a smoke screen for a possible trade down?

Colbert and Tomlin interviewed Rudolph after his pro day workout. They also had a formal sit down at the NFL Combine. The number of second interviews among projected round one players for the Steelers is a rather short list.

Years back, Colbert was very fond of Phillip Rivers a very accurate type, capable of leading his receivers to run underneath it in the deep ball or hitting them in stride on the crossing route. I think Rudolph has some similarities to Rivers as a passer, minus that funky release. Rudolph is a better runner. Like Rivers he's also durable, and smart.

Is this interest in drafting Rudolph in round one real, or are the Steelers playing a game of poker, hoping one of the teams who didn't get one of the top 4 QB's in round one makes them an offer they can't refuse?

Also the last time that someone fell unexpectedly it was Mendenhall. We just hadn't done the homework on him and he just wasn't in love with the game to that point that he could take the physical pounding.

It's one of the reasons that I'm wary of someone falling too far - and why the trade back seems like a good plan this year.

The trade value chart is all but obsolete these days. I guess you could use it as a ROUGH estimate.
However, a team trading from 32-36 up to 28 will have to give up a 3rd.

If they like him enough, I can see them pulling the trigger. That goes for Lamar Jackson as well.

So wrong on many things....first it was Cowher, not Colbert who was high on Rivers. He had inside knowledge from the coaching staff at N.C. State. Rivers was a top ten prospect during his junior season. Had a monster Sr. year.

Similarities between the two? Definitely not in resume. I know, as I followed him and Koren Robinson while they were in Raleigh. Rivers was All ACC as a junior and Conference MVP for Jr. and Sr. seasons. Was in 4 Bowl games. A Heisman candidate as a Sr. as well. He broke almost all NCSU and ACC passing records during his college career.

Rudolph has had a solid college career, but no where near the substance that Rivers had. As for be a runner, please. Rivers couldn’t at all. I doubt he had 100 career yards while starting 50+ games.

I wouldn’t have a problem Pitt grabbing Rudolph. Would make sense to let him sit and learn from Ben. I only worry about that arm strength.

I don't think they're trading down and if they did, I doubt they'd trade out of the first so they get that extra year on the rookie contract.

Not seeing it

if a team wants to trade up with the Steelers, they need to have their offer in place two picks prior to the Steelers' turn....no way the Steelers give them time to make an offer once they are on the clock....

I love how all the threads talking about the draft have been given one star by someone. LMAO! Whatever dude.

I read an article that the Steelers are interested in Dante Pettis from Washington. Planning to meet with him.
