Top 5 defensive concerns

Cause Heyward, Tuitt, and Shazier all suck?
Watt's no good?

Going back to Timmons and Woodley which kicked off this current era?
Maybe Keenan Lewis in there, too.

I don't think drafting has been a problem with this current regime.
There's plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise, both sides of the ball, that show that isn't the issue.

I don't think drafting quality defensive players*in*round one has been the problem.** I think the real problem on defense is what is our identity combined with the way NFL offenses are evolving.

If you want to run a 3-4, a top NT is a must to stuff the run.

If you want to run a 4-3, your inside linebacker better have good speed, and the DT's need to be better than Hargrave and big Dan.

If you want*to play a*nickel formation you need two LB's that can cover.

The Steelers spent 3 of their first 4 picks on offense this year when everyone and their mother knew the defensive problems the team was going to have in 2019

The way the draft fell, I'd take Washington and Rudolph every time in round 2/3. You can argue 4, but it seems like a great idea now since we lost our swing tackle for the year.

he's not arguing . He just has groundhog day every day. He gets up and repeats the same dumb ****. But you already know this. So nice of you to indulge him.

Hmmm....please enthrall is with your acumen on what the identity needs to be.

Curious as to your definition of which backers are supposed to cover? You DO realize it depends on player matchups. That’s the whole reason for the nickel and dime formations.

In fairness the NFL isn't letting anyone tackle, we just happened to be among the best at not tackling.

Do you want to win a championship now? Can either of those guys play defense and tackle? Chukwuma Okorafor is someone who should not have been drafted, give me the best LB or DT/NT on the board at that point please.

Do you realize none of our ILB's can cover? RB and TE's will eat us alive. We might be best off with a dime, with Edmunds as the linebacker, but of course you can't play that formation on 1st down, 2nd and short or 3rd and 1.

Right now it looks like the Steelers are flirting with the idea of playing 2 nose tackles, that;s because we really don't have one good one.

And with Hawkins out for the year we wouldn't have a swing tackle. Pretty smart to draft one since Hubbard left and we replaced him with someone cheaper, right? It's all about the cheaper option right?

and one of those DT/NT OR LB would have gotten us a championship? damn.

they tried to trade up and get one of the top ILB in the draft. when that didn't happen they took Edmunds. I do agree that a top ILB could be the difference between a championship this year or not, but it didn't happen that way.

given how the draft fell, you cant really argue with the picks, very athletic defensive player, a WR that looks to be a stud perhaps the future franchise QB. and a capableOT.

Hawkins was a turnstile. We should have signed a veteran back up tackle. If Chucks has to play...watch out Ben.

Bullshit, he was in on multiple sets last year, and we were very successful with him as the extra tackle. He was set to take Hubbard's spot, all in line with drafting, then he gets hit with a season ender. Sour grapes, but don't try to change what actually happened with your negative narrative.

Am I the only one that can tell that Coach started a thread just by the title he provides?

Anyway, it's preseason. They haven't even game planned yet. Also, this will not be the 70' Steel Curtain.
Sorry...If we can get these guys to be top10, you can go to the SB with the offense we have. Hate to break
it to you Coach, but very few teams have dynamic offenses and defenses simultaneously. They have this thing
called the salary cap that prevents that.

The top two issues for the defense are tackling and getting to the QB.
I am hoping we add another OLB before our first game. Bud needs to take the next step; but I have no confidence that will happen.

You initially said the nickel requires 2 ILB. What is the nickel? With this team, it’s 5 DBs, typically one ILB and the rest line or edge players who can drop into coverage. Hilton is the nickel back. They haven’t determined the ILB yet. They may replace that player with a money backer a’la Edmonds or Burnett.

For someone who says he knows a lot and has (purportedly) coached at some level, you sure are questioning your understanding of defensive formations and tactics.
