Tomlin Extension

I’d still like to know what it is he excels at as a head coach? I do get what Coryea is saying but you have to wonder with all the talent that has gone through the Steelers complex, that with a better HC where we might have gone.
For me the last straw was the playoff loss at home to Jags. So poorly prepared and looking ahead to the Pats. Who ******* does that?

I think Tomlin needs to feel some heat after the failures in recent years, however, if you feel you have regained the locker room by getting rid of Brown and Bell, signing Tomlin to an extension makes sense. If they don't, there will be yearlong speculation that he could get fired. Then you just create another distraction. The Steelers have enough money if they want to fire him a year into a three-year deal, they could.

It is not that I hate him as a person but I strongly question his approach at times. Most notably clock management and replay challenges. Show me some sign of mixing it up and improvement in those critical moments of a game. For the last few years I think that most would say our offense was stronger than our defense. If you win the coin toss why always defer unless it is based upon weather conditions. If you possess the ball first you have a 50% chance at having one more offensive series than your opponent during the course of the game. Possibly take an early lead and let the other team play from behind.
There are just so many little things that can turn things in our favor. How the hell can you make an informed decision on challenges without using guidance from above (not God) but a body in a coaching booth with quick visual aids and a knowledge of the current rules.
I looked at the list you mentioned and it is true Tomlin has had success. He will continue to climb that lists no doubt, whether it is with us or another team.
I hope he moves up quickly because that may mean we have achieved another ring.
The one stat that definitely is my most important though, is Tomlin playoff record 8-7 , Cowher playoff record 12-9 , Noll playoff record 16-8
Both Tomlin and Noll had a QB and some pretty good players in support Cowher had Ben for a few years and some good DEF
If Tomlin improves that record and starts learning how to put opposing teams away I will lighten up. No one can win every game. I just don't want to hear any excuses why we were not prepared to win, no matter how eloquently they are spoken.

All good points about the possible perceptions of the front office and the masses.
I hope they wait at least until next year and re-evaluate the direction the team is heading.
Stability in an organization's coaching staff is great but even the likes of Noll, Shula and Landry had an expiration date.

Just my opinion, but I think Art II should wait until they get past the 49er's and Dolphins before extending him.

You know, to see if things have changed at all.

Maybe Art II should use his own personal salary if he wants to extend Tomlin early. That way we are sure the front office has faith in the coaching staff.

When they speak about needed change because of poor results.....and they fire the LB coach and not anyone more significant than that, color me not impressed. Yea, Tomlin, change like that will really make an impact.

Art 2 doesn't even need a salary, he owns the team, and it's worth approximately $2.5 billion.

The team was owned by 19 different members in the past. About 5 of whom are Rooney's. Art II is still probably the largest % of ownership but I highly doubt he operates as the President of the team without compensation for that specific job title. Basically I was joking that he should spend his personal monies ahead of the team's assets if he has so much faith in Tomlin.

Tomlin can make things look so good and then add in the "cliches" and a lot of people are mesmerized and buy into the win loss record. He hasn't had a losing season.... Yadda yadda yadda.....

Flip side,.......... Cowher won 1 SB year 2 with BEN. Tomlin won SB in Ben's year 4 and a WHOLE BUNCH OF COWHER's PLAYERS (not going to argue this fact). What has CMVLT done since......... What outstanding trait is Tomlin known for?......Does Tomlin typically bring players in and elevate their play through coaching?.......Who are some of the coaching "tree" that served under Tomlin?.....I can go on and on but you get my drift...............


I can't tell ownership who to hire / extend but I CAN SEE the product on the table. His current contract could be extended next off season as easily as this off season. He can't decide if a coach needs to elevate their game (bubbles cheek), doesn't step back and enhance as a leader should, has attitude of untouchable. There is NO URGANCY to extend him and the wait and see approach would make WAY more sense. Granted this extention is all here say but this is my opinion. Would I like to see Tomlin show change and true coaching leadership, HELL yea but until then, the EXTENSION would be out of the equation.

Ben went 13-0 as a rookie and won a Super Bowl in his second season. He is absolutely a Cowher legacy. Would've loved to see what he would've done if not for all of the injury issues in his third season.

Lurker here, but this thread is where the rubber meets the road with this franchise IMO. Nothing about Tomlin has trended upward since the Tebowing and the embarrassing sideline incident a couple years later. Too many sloppy performances rationalized with "not looking for style points" and "we don't apologize for it" gibberish.

Looking back, he was compensating for something. He still is compensating with comments about "formulation" and "cleansing" following Operation Scapegoat that started in Week 17. Tomlin aided and abetted the very conditions that are now scapegoated as the two reasons for his lack of results.

Tomlin's handling of challenges and the admission by Art that the team will now hire a replay assistant is Exhibit A of his lack of Executive humility.

By contrast, Jon Gruden's very first move upon accepting the job in Oakland was to hire Gerry Austin. Why? Because Gruden's years in the booth taught him that the game had changed at warp speed and static approaches to dynamic challenges would not work. Tomlin meanwhile had to be dragged kicking and screaming to change and has yet to exhibit the humility of self-introspection.

It should also be mandated that he figure out how to rotate carries in the backfield. How many seasons were compromised by his stubborn refusal to do so.

Definitely agree with others that making this a Prove It year is a No Brainer.

Rooney told cowher to take him. Cowher is just a beneficiary of Rooney's decision.
