Tomlin era drafts reviewed (AGAIN)

Spaeth can't block? You know he lasted 10 years in the league, widely recognized as one of the best blocking TEs in the league?

The 09 draft is the worst in history. I did an article on it. Finding a pro bowler anywhere in that draft was a miracle, and the Steelers nabbed one in the 3rd round. That draft was so bad, a readraft would have had Wallace in the top 5.

The one thing Spaeth could do is block a mofo. Like you said, he didn't last that long in the league for nothing.

NOT in my neck of the woods. Our entire fan club calls him Oak Tree, Steel Wipe. Why don't you add to the thread something other than your tantrums.

What fan club are you speaking of? He’s always been Shade Tree. All the way back to his freshman year at UT.

How about some providing some analysis of the completely awful drafts completed by Hoodie and the Patriot organization in the past 20 years? Their success rate is in the teens percentage wise. They can cheat, but they have a lousy scouting department.

The Steelers have drafted defense in the first round for 7 straight drafts.

That tells you two things: 1) Ben is the offense, and 2) Shades hasn't figured out the defense yet since Lebeau left.

Over the last 50 years there have been some good drafts, and some that weren't.

You're welcome!

Do you Remeber them???? I think the 69' draft was pretty good.!!!

Salute the nation

I would say the Steelers draft alot better than the Pat's. If you take away the cheating

I remember as a teenager while working as a caddy at Westmoreland Country Club, for the fat cats from Squirrel Hill, praising the LC pick.
Those ******** had every conceivable club made in their bags, but that's the first I clearly recall.

It has already been noted that it is Tombert that handles the draft. A horrible biased thread packed with window licking commentary. And I am not a huge Tomlin fan. Just a ridiculous attempt to hate on Tomlin. Hopefully it is about time to set this troll out to the pasture.

It should also be noted that Tomlin and the positional coaches are responsible for developing the players. Tomlin a former DB and alleged top cover two mind has failed in this department.

Polamalu Talyor,Hope, and Townsend were fine picks by Colbert, developed by Bill Cowher and his staff that Tomlin inherited. I haven't seen much in terms of DB development of drafted players since Tomlin became the head coach, have you? Colbert did bring in Clark and Haden, which were solid moves, but these were already developed players from other NFL Staff's

LeBeau covered up for the lack of talent among the DB's as best as he could.

Butler, whom Tomlin picked to replace him guided the defense to a 16th overall ranking, 23rd vs the pass, and 28th overall in terms of interceptions.

I'm glad I'm NOT one of the three in your fan club. I've never called him the Oak Tree, it has always been the "Shade" tree.

A-N-D

I thought in your neck of the woods there weren't any trees. Lot of waiting in line for adult diapers and geritol.

Drink Iron ******, do you ever post abut football?

Loved when TMC would do his analysis. The draft is a crap shoot, bitching about it afterwards is pointless.

The crapshoot comment is usually said after a bad draft. Talent evaluation of the draft elidgbe players, having an understanding of how they fit into the deployments the coaches want, and smart GM maneuvering have a lot to do with a successful draft.

While Colbert is good GM overall, I just don't understand his DB analysis.

Years back I wanted Kyle Fuller in round one. He's one of the best now in football.

I also like Peters. While has off the field issues, the man can flat out play. I'll take that at corner like for his first five seasons before he's making 11+ million a season.

And I disliked the Burns picked and wanted X Howard. The Steelers badly missed here and had a trade down option.

Strike three for the Steelers.

Colbert is good at picking up other teams DB's, but drafting them he has been rather cold lately. Having said that I like Lanye a lot in round three. I think he can be a very good #3 or solid starter type.

Tomlin was known as a supposed DB-oriented guru from the brief time in TB per John Lynch's comments some years ago. It's telling that the defense and in particular DBs have been such a mess since Tomlin took over the D from DL.

Tomlin played WR in college. Our WRs aren't a problem are they?

And lets look at the last 7 defensive players taken in the draft round 1:

Devin Bush - Top 10 talent, projects to being a pro bowler/all pro
Terrell Edmunds - Highly athletic SS. Very excited to see his sophmore progress since he made plays as a rookie
TJ Watt - Home ******* run. Pro bowl talent and wants to be better than his brother, which means he has his sights on DPOY
Artie Burns- Looked good early, and fizzled. Has all the measurables, just didn't have the mentality. It's succeed or bust out this year.
Bud Dupree - One of the best Sparq per size players we've drafted. Getting incrementally better each season.
Ryan Shazier - Honestly, I thought this pick was a head scratcher, then I saw him play. All pro/DPOY talent. Too bad he's not playing, because he'd be an all pro
Jarvis Jones - Abosolute bust. Just a bad pick. Drafted with poor film and poor medical record. Don't know why we loved him, I had him as undraftable, Like I also had for Randy Gregory, but that was due to the pot...

So One bust and another possible bust with burns. Missing on up to 2 of 7 while hitting on 4-5/7 is pretty ******* good in the NFL. Dupree is a push for me if I'm being honest. I want to see the 1.9sec bend he has in training camp in a freaking game!

Troy was pretty easy to develop would be my guess. Ike for a fourth rd pick was awesome but not sure if he really developed. he could cover his *** off but couldn't catch the ball. hope was ok and townsend was ok. what made they last 3 really good was having Harrison in his prime rushing the QB

Can’t we merge this ? Today for lunch I’m gonna grill some chicken quarters that have marinated in Goya Mojo for 48 hours I even added a squirt soda. Was gonna make it for dinner but all the kids spent the night elsewhere. The trick is to get the skin really crispy without being dried out. Can’t decide if I want to add a little open pit BBQ sauce at the end or maybe home made with onion and apple cider. Perhaps just a dry rub will do.

Ben probably has a lot to do with that (we'll see in Oakland this year), but they have drafted that position well for 20 years with a few headcases mixed in.

Tomlin had a rep as a Tampa 2-DB guy in Tampa Bay prior to the one year in Minn. People wanted him to put his imprint on the defense once the Lebeau era ended. 7 straight years of going defense in the first round.

This is a pivotal year for Tomlin's defensive vision.

Cool Shades rode the coattails of a very stacked TB D. As it turns out, he is actually pretty horrid at coaching a D and seems totally lost in attempting to make adjustments....well, I don't think he even attempts to. His stubborn nature and lack of making adjustments made us lose to a Tim Tebow team in the playoffs.

To be fair, Tebow won a lot of games that year he shouldn't have.

There was only so much our D could do when we lost 2 of our starting 3 DL to injury in the first half, and we had to change our game plan. A lot of revisionist history when people lament this game.

I remember being so excited that Sweed "fell" to us. I thought he was the missing link to another championship.

Me too, big time! What a disaster he turned out to be.

See, I thought we didn't change our game plan. I thought they kept daring Tebow to beat them deep and he did all game, and needed 1 play in OT. But I didn't know we had 2 DL out.
