Todd Monken hired as Browns new head coach

If Cleveland would have hired a guy with a defensive background, I’m guessing Schwartz would have resigned before the press conference. Not so sure now and the Steelers can’t reach out to him directly, they will need to go through the Browns front office and I’m pretty sure they’d tell Art or Omar where to go.

Schwartz would need to resign knowing someone will pick him up, I gotta believe Cleveland has already told him he’s getting a raise to soothe his ego.

On the other hand, watching Swartz on the sidelines, he gives the impression he’d like to enter the game and hit someone. Maybe he’s pissed enough to walk.

Todd Monken going to the mistake on the lake.
Steelers now need to inquire about DC Jim Schwartz from the Browns. Love to have him!
I read he was ok with Schwartz returning as a DC, I am thinking he will just stay there…

Bob Pomp on 93.7 The Fan reported that he just heard from Schefter that Schwartz was visibly upset getting passed over for the HC job.
Said his goodbyes and left the facilities.
McCarthy needs to get on speed dial now .
Definitely

He's still under contract, so the Steelers would need to cut a deal with the Browns. Not sure they want to do that. I guess we'll see.

Browns fans seem to hate this hire. Have any fanbases liked the move? If I had to grade in Tiers.

B (safe) tier - Harbaugh and McCarthy
The Giants have talented young players at the offensive skill positions and need to grow as a team. Pittsburgh has enough talent to win with a few upgrades IF they can find a QB, which is a massive hole. Probably the best pure coaches in the cycle with Harbaugh getting it done with Flacco and Jackson and McCarthy having success with two different franchises.

I don't love the McCarthy hire, but compared to what the rest of these teams...the Steelers did pretty well.

A (upside) tier - Jesse Minter
There are still two jobs left, but in terms of the popular up-and-coming coordinators, Minter is the only one to get a job so far. From what I gather, he was a favorite with Ravens fans. From everything I've read, he has the blend of X's & O's along with leadership style that should succeed.

C (bad retread tier) - Stefanski and Saleh
Saleh is a terrific DC and was a disaster as HC in New York. That's a tough franchise to win with and didn't do anything to help the cause. Stefanski is supposed to be some offensive wizard, yet no QB development and the Browns are only known for their defense. I think Saleh is a much better coordinator compared to Stefanski, but would give Stefanski an edge as a HC.

C- (more of the same) - Joe Brady
Buffalo gets the same offense and possibly a downgrade with the defensive playcaller (McDermott was pretty good at getting the most out of that roster). The Bills are really counting on Brady instilling better game management and culture change to get them over the hump. To me this would've been like promoting Arthur Smith. If you're that close to a Super Bowl, hire a coach who is going to get you there.

D (underwhelming) - Hafley and Monken
Hafley was bad at Boston College and isn't exactly known to be a defensive mastermind in the NFL. The Monken hire is already hated by the Browns and I rate him low because I think the Browns interviewed a lot of coaches and had options with more upside, even for Cleveland.

Schwartz runs the 4-3 defense...if McCarthy is true to his word about keeping the 3-4 and the language, no way do I see him bringing in Schwartz.

You think Schwartz has never seen a 3-4? These guys adapt very well. Especially the really good ones,

Nah, I love Swartz, but that guy is a 4-3 fanatic... he will end up with the Ravens

Plus if he just quits, a team will have to give up a pick to get him

So why not just switch to the 4-3 and hire Schwartz?
Personnel. Linebackers mainly.
We don’t have a middle linebacker capable in that alignment …
TJ is not going to fit as An OLB in a 4-3 .
Herbig either.
Highsmith possibly could transition well?
Sawyer could work also against run .. but not pass coverage..
You lose pass pressure also because I don’t believe our current group of DLinemen could fit the role in 4-3..
Just my humble opinion..

A brand new defensive head coach hiring an alpha DC would be quite the move.

Thanks for the response. I would actually be interested in seeing how a D line of Heyward, Harmon, Black and Benton would perform.
