Timmons Willing to Take a Pay Cut to Remain a Steeler

It did take him a little time but he is a top 5 ILB in the NFL. He has been for several years. I think the stigma stuck with him after we drafted him and he had to learn a whole knew position. But just look at the numbers and he has been better than a lot of pro bowl players for a few seasons now. I think however his contract will probably play out and we let him walk. He's 29 and we have him locked up for two more years so unless he takes a hometown paycut and allows us to spread out some signing bonus I doubt he gets another contract with us. That being said he will make 7.5 million and 8.75 million in the next two years so don't feel sorry for him.
youre out of your mind he's not close to a top 5 ilb

All Pro - Inside linebacker
First team:
Luke Kuechly, Carolina, 43; Bobby Wagner, Seattle, 31.
Second team: C.J. Mosley, Baltimore, 9; DeAndre Levy, Detroit, 4; Lawrence Timmons, Pittsburgh, 4

Not bad for Joe Average, or someone behind the curve.

"But he only got 4 votes!!!" Of course, irrelevant, since there are only 3 people who got more votes. For those mathematically challenged, that is tied for 4th best in the league. If he was even half as bad as you say, he wouldn't have gotten those 4 votes. If there hadn't been some injuries in the league, he might have fallen out of the top 5 to top 10, so, I guess, you can hang your hat on that...

As, probably, his most ardent supporter on this board, even I think Timmons has been overpaid, but anyone that argues he is anything close to average is wrong.

Timmons does bring his lunch to the field every game...some times he even leave it ON the field too. But he never quits on a play.

Timmons might be "overpaid" but if you look at him vs Woodley I would say he earns his money. He plays and starts 16 games every year. Gets hurt, pukes, pulls something and misses a few snaps not games or a season. He might never lead in a category but he always seems to have 100+ tackles, 2-6 sacks, 2-6 PD's, 1-4 INT's. Always very good numbers. Yeah, maybe not eye popping numbers but year in and year out dude gets the job done.

I mean "overpaid" in the sense that he is one of the top three, if not *the*, highest paid ILB in the game (unless I have that wrong). If that is the case, there should never be an argument, anywhere, as to whether you are a top-5 player at your position.

Timmons is over paid. He's paid because he makes tackles, not because he makes plays, But because he makes... Takles. I guarantee you put anybody in his spot at buck inside linebacker and they'll make 100+ tackles for the season. Also, doesn't EVERYONE say they want to restructure their contract to "help the team save money"? All it means is they get their $ sooner than later. Remember Ben's home town discount and "pay cut" to stay with the team? Well it's all pay cut until they actually have to sit down and negotiate, then it's still market value for what they feel they're worth.

I think Willis had a bigger deal and Bowman was right up there. Kuechly is going to break the bank when he gets a new deal. I'm not saying Timmons didn't get a huge deal but if we grade on a curve and consider Woodley's massive deal and what we got out of that Timmons at least plays thru injury, stays in shape, and produces on the field.

His words in the article were adjustment. The article went on to state what he was to be paid over the next two seasons and it sounds a bit high. If the contract were adjusted to lower the cap hit each year and maybe extended one year or two it could likely result in his earning less each year and no dead money unless there was a career ending injury. The alternative would be for him to be cut and make nothing and be replaced by another player. Ike took a cut to be with the team an extra year so players do such things so did Bettis.

Sounds like he is ready to do something in a reasonable fashion to finish out his career with the steelers, and in the business of professional sports reasonable is great.

Injuries is exactly why he was there. D Johnson, bowman, lee and Cushing not back to normal had a huge hand In it. I will also add Beason is better and Demario Davis is well on his way to being better. Timmons has been the second highest paid ilb for some time now and isn't near the secod best ilb in the league. You can easily argue a few more guys being better

So, you are saying he is a top 10 ILB?

The fact is that if he matched what the detractors from this board says he is, he doesn't get 4 votes, regardless of injuries.

Timmons is a solid player and it's nice that he is thinking ahead to finish his career in Pittsburgh. Hopefully it all works out.

Hopefully he's self aware enough to know that the odds of making his nearly 9M salary next year are slim. I wouldn't mind if we took his existing non guaranteed money and transitioned it into a 5 year/27.5 pact so he could finish his career here and make a more reasonable salary.

Maybe this coming up around OTAs means the team looks LB heavy, mostly with young guys....if somebody can play alongside Shazier, then Timmons and his big cap hit and salary will be obvious sources of funds needed to sign the younger guys....good for Timmons and his people getting out in front of this.

I definitely wonder with the depth at the position and his cap hit if he wasn't starting to feel nervous. Some people get to love a place and are smart enough to realize the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side. I think with players plenty of them feel that way and wish to stay. Some weigh the money possibilities. In every job you have some of both. In my new job they teach me a lot and leave me alone. After I get state certified my value will instantaneously rise up. I could easily get more if I explore then. But because how they treat me I will be hard pressed to go anywhere. At least not for awhile.

ILBer is one of the Steelers strengths and can become even stronger if Shazier emerges.

I think Timmons simply sees the writing on the wall and wishes to stay and even more-so wants the FO to know moving forward he will continue to be reasonable with his salary expectations.

Why so many here want to put a negative spin on this is beyond me. Overpaid, you may think so but the FO must have felt differently. L.Timmons is willing, before being asked, to lower his cap hit. He will be paid near his value to the team. FO and him will determine that $$$. He has been here, very good, and healthy, why send him packing?

Salute the nation

good leader, reliable starter good captain for these young kids on D
please take the pay cut so we can lock up up Hayward for life.
locking him up will be essential to regaining a top 5 front 3 in a long time, for us since 2010.

LE Heward NT Mccullers RE Tuitt, use Mclendon more in 4-3 sets as the under T
