The 2018 college football season is still seven months away, but it’s never too early to look ahead at the upcoming year and rank some of the top players returning to the gridiron. Houston's Ed Oliver takes the top spot in Athlon's early top 50 players returning for 2018, with Clemson's Christian Wilkins and Stanford's Bryce Love rounding out the top three. It's a deep year for talent on the defensive line. In addition to Oliver and Wilkins, Clemson's Clelin Ferrell, Ohio State's Nick Bosa and Northern Illinois' Sutton Smith also have a spot in the top 10. Penn State's Trace McSorley is the highest-ranked quarterback, checking in at No. 5 overall prior to spring ball.

Ed won't be a Steeler, he will go way too high the year he is drafted (baring major injury)

He ain't no Case Keenum or WJIII! Lol anyway I'm playing, he's great and should be a great pro

I am also very encouraged by PSU having the top returning QB. This makes me feel very good about our B1G and Natty chances

It will be between him and the Hawaiian in Alabama.

Georgia landed the top QB recruit, a dual threat named Justin Fields. Funny that both Alabama and Georgia could possibly start true freshman QBs over more experienced guys who got their teams to the playoffs. Of course, the Georgia QB actually had to win his way into the playoffs, but still, a unique situation.
