The transition from the 3-4 to the nickel / dime defense that has the DB's playing well off the LOS has been a painful one.

Players like Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Joey Porter, Ike Taylor, Troy Polamalu, Deshea Townsend, Brett Keisel, James Farrior, Lamar Woodley ( He was good for a few years ) , and Ryan Clark are long gone.

I listed 10 players.

All that remains from the old guard, A.K.A. Bill Cowher players are James Harrison, and he's got little left. There you have it, our starting defense in 2008 minus Larry Foote.

Any one of these players would the exception of Foote be starting or playing a major role on the current defense. You could argue Heyward and Shazier belong in the above group, but Shazier is hurt again, and Heyward is also out.

What's left is a group of down 4 lineman that lacks a Nost Tackle, and outside of Heyward has little or no ability to rush the passer.

The OLB's are a complete mess. The worst group I've even seen as a Steeler fan. And the DB's are playing off by design, to mask weakness, and have yet to record one interception in six weeks of play.

How did it come to this?

Yet other morons on here will give these threads credibility by actually responding to them in paragraph form.

are you drunk, coach? I don't see the point in that rambling post.

The sobering reality is Tomlin and Colbert let a once excellent defense decline to what we see today.

The Browns defense might be better.

There should be a smack talk forum for posters who want that type of stuff. I guess when the point is too powerful you can always go to comedy. They know the defense has gone to $h^t

Make a thread about it

excellent comeback.

For years I wished we had offense that matched our defense. Technically, now we do.... but it matches the old defense, not the current one. Doh.

Well, not sure if you noticed, but........DL was here for several years after Tomlin came on board. He played the guys 10 yrds off the LoS, too...

yeah, yeah, the 50 year veteran of the NFL was bullied by Tomlin into taking inferior players in which he had no input. Except that, when he left, he asked several of those, including the much maligned Blake, to come to his new team. Did Tomlin make him take those players, too?

I think that 95% of us, at one point or another, have asked Coach to quit posting.

However, in Coach's defense, he ALWAYS shows up. Which is more than what I can say about posters who flock to the forum after a Steeler loss, but go radio silent following a win....

Let's compare your posts in this thread to Coach's original post....which are more worthless? Yours are. At least Coach posts on topic with valid points. All you do is ***** about others' posts, which is far more worthless than ANY on topic posts.

Is that really all you have to offer? I hope you offer more to society than you offer here: Crying about people who make on topic posts is so weak.

It's not about SCHEME! They don't have the players to run any system effectively. Stiffs on the D line and schmoes in the secondary with china doll injuries in between

There are no more Aaron Smith's or Troys or Casey Hampton's on the D team - no new youngblood playmakers have stepped up

We got a whole lot of bleh, with another round of bleh backing them up

I blame the draft busts (which the Steelers stubbornly refuse to admit were mistakes and get rid of)

That's why I've been saying for a year now, don't waste any more time talking about the D - it's years away from being even average again

Draft all offense for Ben's last remaining years and hope to outscore them all....this defense is deader than a doornail

That's what drives me the most nuts. They protect their ego over doing what is best for the success of the team. It is so over-the-top obvious to me. That mentality is child-like

Aw, is it that time of the month Bleeder?

If you don't like my posts skip them.

the D is obviously in transition, how many young guys are on D? Tuitt, Hargrave,McC, Cockrell, Burns, Golden, Shazier, Vince, Chick, Davis.
OF course they are gonna suck from time to time, is part of the learning experience.

But what was the other option? keep old vets and garbage FAs?

nobody does you dumbass, except your pal poop, who makes as many dumb threads as you do. But I didn't say anything about him,, because he cried to Justin. I guess I can now.

I saw the D starting to rise up the standings before the injuries.

I think they are one or two players away from having a solid D.

A pass rusher (above average) Dupree's return?
A corner ( hopefully Burns will develop)

oh yeah and a few players actually staying on the field.............

Josh Miller had some interesting comments on 93.7 this morning. He basically said that Belichick drafts borderline talent guys who have to work their butt off to even earn a job and that whatever there job is, they're expected to do it and do it well. It was a very interesting take and given some of the draft picks they've made over the years, it makes sense. I thought of a guy like Vince Williams, someone who had the talent to play in the NFL, but was going to have to work to earn a spot and he's developed into a nice backup and capable starter. But like many others, I'm amazed that a defense with so many high draft choices is so bad at times. They started to get the whole bend but don't break thing down and that works, but at some point you'd like to see the investment pay off into a few playmakers.

Give it time bleeder. It will go away. No need to cry to Justin.
