The top six rookies you want to see most in camp are who?

I saw the segment, that's what he said. I've been to camp twice and have seen Washington beat the CB deep, but the QB hasn't always made a good throw.

Thanks for verifying. I hope you are right .

He said Washington wasn't going to be a great deep threat? If anyone has a link I'd love to listen in...

From my breakdowns, Rudolph threw him open well in college, and is a NFL caliber QB. Ben is also an NFL caliber QB that will throw him open in the pros.

Washington isn't the fastest, but there were 3 things I broke down in his receiving game that will get him open:

1) He accelerates slower than most receivers, but has a longer duration of acceleration. It causes DBs to misread their angles, as JW is continuing to accelerate all the way through his route, for about 20 yards. This is how he gets separation on sideline fly patterns.

2) Route running. He does a nice job of setting up routes. In college, the DB didn't know if he was running a post, fly, or corner/out, because he masked his route, broke down before the DB could get close, or feigned another route while driving hard back into his planned route. For a receiver that is fast at top speed and gaining ground, a single misstep by a DB means he's open.

3) He's a combative receiver. He's bigger bodied than just about anyone he's going to go up against in the NFL, and he uses his barrel chest and long arms, to box out, highpoint, and catch the ball away from his frame, with his hands.

He has the tools to be a Anquaan Bolden type player, but with a sneakier deep speed.

Washington will have several deep passes for big plays this year.

I think Washington is just a gamer who wants to win, and his physicality and willpower will allow him to make plays beyond what his work out #'s suggest.* If he's getting open vs our group of decent corners, that is saying something.

The Edmunds pick looks fantastic so far. I hope Tomlin gives him a chance to start as a rookie. He's too much of a playmaker to be left on the bench.

I'd move him to start at and pair him with Burnett, playing Davis at one of the safety sots when Edmunds moves to Dime or Nickle Backer.

Did you use your CoachO'meter to gather all this data? I'm sure some scouting organization is looking for a device like this. A gamer who wants to win. God if we could just find more of these.

Maybe you should dust off the ol' headO'meter just to make sure,, nah.. never mind best leave that one covered up in the garage.

But you hated the Edmunds pick....what changed your mind?

WRONG. I had Edmunds in my mock drafts for rounds 2 or 3. I liked him, but felt he was a bit of a reach in round one. Anyone I mock in rounds 2 or 3 I like.

Here's what I said about the pick on draft day :

Top sub-package player who can play nickel or dime ILB. Should be able to cover most Tight Ends. An X-factor type in situational football. A Strong safety with good hands.* Top character.* I wonder how he'll be in coverage vs. NFL WR's
and suspect the answer is so-so. I like Edmunds and would have been very happy with him in round two if we didn't pick a S or ILB in round one.

Now that your memory has been refreshed Ike, you can quote me correctly

He likes him because it will knock Davis off of the field ;)

Well, the Steelers spent a lot of money on a free agent at Safety, and used their first round pick at the same positon. So the question is, will Edmunds be better than Davis as a rookie?

My memory didn’t need refreshed, you hated the pick in the first round. You even commented in your quote you didn’t know if he could cover....well according to the spotters he’s covering like a corner.

You can’t even quote yourself correctly, that’s why there are a cast of thousands who do it for you.

So you are comparing a 1st rounder or a 2nd rounder? Wait, you said Edmunds should have been drafted in the 2nd..so what if both are starting? (Unlikely).

Last year at this time JuJu was a slow possession receiver. Making big plays is more than just speed. If it was then drafting WRs would be easy. John Ross would have been the first overall pick last year.

So many of these speed WRs suck in the NFL because they never had to learn how to play the position. They were always able to just outrun everybody for easy TDs. They get to the NFL and you can’t just run past people, you need route running and contested catch ability because you rarely get wide open.

I think JuJu and Washington are similar. Neither has top speed but they both play fast, understand how to get open and make contested catches.

Ok State’s offense had lots of vertical routes so Washington caught a bunch of deep balls. He probably won’t be a primary deep threat for the steelers but that isn’t a bad thing.

Tape, good analogy on the importance of a route tree. I would like to know the efficiency rating for JW and MR when he was targeted while OSU.

You can't even quote me in context. You must have reading issues. I'll help.

Good coverage vs TE's, so so v WR's. Where did I say he would be bad in coverage?** Go back to rearranging lawn chairs Ike, you're clueless

Wrong genius, you specified he could cover versus TE, and wondered how he would handle WRs. You didn’t state “so so v WR’s”. Your context of “so so versus” isn’t the same as questioning “whether he can cover WRs.”. Beat writers there at St. Vincent are saying 34 is covering people (that means all receivers cool breeze) like a CB.

I swear, it’s almost as if you enjoy being considered idiotic. For you to call someone else clueless.....that’s classic. To use your own thought process, your head must be too big to keep up with your own rambling musings.

Coach I just don't get how you can eval a player. You admitted plenty of times you don't watch game tapes. So IMO you are just regurgitating something you read somewhere else. And passing it off as your own eval.

And if you evaluated based off of you-tube highlight reels that is just as bad.

If you ever want to be taken serious you have to either start watching games in full length, or don't throw **** up like you are some draft nick. Because seriously you aren't.

Sounds like coach has all bases covered on Edmunds. If he’s great then he told us he was great because he had him rated in the top 3 rounds. If he’s not great then coach told you he didn’t have him as a 1st rounder.

As for coverage, he’s only good vs TEs and so so vs WRs. Again, you can claim you’re right no matter what. If he becomes a great coverage saftey you’ll say you told us he was great vs TEs and better than average vs WRs and it’s no surprise he developed. Or if he struggles in coverage, you can say that you told us all that he was OK vs TEs and bad vs WRs so it’s not surprise he struggles in coverage.

I know Coach puts work into his reviews but they do often straddle the fence.

I’ll be shoched if Qadre Henderson makes the team. It seems his only shot is as a return man and the NFL keeps twaeking the kick return rules to where it’s not worth keeping a guy who just returns kicks unless he’s Devin Hester.

When they signed Eli, i think that was the end for Henderson.

Edmunds is looking good, that's a great thing. It's early of course, but if he makes some of us eat crow, serve it up on a platter!

I've been to camp twice. I am really optimistic about this group of Rooks. Some thoughts...

Edmunds- Besides his physical talents. He has great anticipation. He was always around the ball. He's doing all the right things. Watched him signing autographs well after all the players were gone, Rooting for this guy.

Rudolph- The most stand out thing is his level of engagement. I don't think the stage is too big for him. Even when pressured, he showed poise. I did see some bad timing throws but that is what camp is for.

Frazier- There had to be a reason why Dunbar wanted him. I just have no idea what it is ? Dunbar wouldn't stick his neck out without reason. I'm hopeful.

Washington- He is quick out of the cuts. He doesn't look fast but somehow winds up with a step. Once Ben figures him out, 20 Yard TD's will come.

I'm not thrilled about Allen and I'm disappointed to say it. He was out of position, slow to the play. He wasn't aggressive to make a hit. Tentative about everything. Unlike his PSU career.

Just realized I was at camp twice and really don't have an impression on Samuels or Okorafor. I guess we shouldn't stop at Dino's after. Disclaimer we did stay at an Holiday Inn Express.

JaySam looks as advertised a solid pass catcher and at RB maybe a work in progress. JC and Ridley has had more reps at RB which makes me think they will use him as a pass catching RB first, and actually toting the rock secondary.

I think Allen's injury put him behind and I am not sure if he will catch up enough to make the final 53. We'll see.

I can't wait to see Washington and Rudolph in pre season action.
Hopefully they connect early and often and get some confidence trickling into their other fellow 2nd/3rd stringers.
