With Atlanta, Smith had washed up Matt Ryan, Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ridder at QB. That's why the offense didn't move. In Tenn, he took over the 24th ranked scoring offense. In his 2 seasons as OC 2019-2020, they ranked 10th and 4th in points scored.
Also, Derrick Henry averaged 5.1 and 5.4 per carry and had a 2000 yard rushing season. Those were the only 2 years Henry hit 5 ypc in Tenn. After Smith left, Henry's ypc were 4.4 or less in every other season until last year in Balt where the Lamar RPO game makes it easier.
Unlike Matt Canada, Arthur Smith has proven himself in the NFL. His system is similar to what McVey runs.
Broderick Jones is the big question mark. If he can just play at the Dan Moore level, this OL can be great. If Smith struggles, it could drag down the whole offense.
I didn't like the pick of Roman Wilson. At Michigan, he was pretty much a slot guy. Yes, they lined him up outside but he was off the line and they usually schemed him up to not get press coverage. He's good after the catch though.
Calvin Austin is better than people think.
I think WR2 will be more of a group effort. It will be a combo of Austin, Wilson, Robert Wood and Johnu Smith. They still have time to trade for a WR if they feel they need one.
Metcalf was worth the money. Steelers have plenty of cap space. They needed a WR1 that's a physical presence. Pickens showed he had zero interest in blocking or even running routes at full speed.
