The Sprint To The Podium Conundrum

It seemed to me like Cowher and Colbert were more willing to make moves early in the draft.

The year they drafted Hampton, they traded down a few spots and still got him. Also, they went on to use the extra pick they got to trade up in the second round to pick Kendrell Bell.

They also traded up for Polamalu and Holmes.

The Steelers just seem really rigid in their approach to the early rounds anymore. I'm not sure how much of it is Tomlin, or how much can be attributed to Colbert adopting a more conservative approach on his own, but the Steelers seem much less inclined to trade early picks anymore.

or they mighta got ****.

and that's why they didn't.

anyone got transcripts?

I would think the fact Denver traded with Seattle and gave them a 3rd is enough to assume that since the Steelers were in a better position would at the very minimum garnered at least that same offer. Why do you need a bug in their phones to tell you that?

because all anyone here has is speculation, maybe?

I freely admit that I don't know jack about Artie Burns, but is he such an outstanding prospect that taking seven minutes to initiate calls to other teams to see if they have any interest in moving up was out of the question? Was Burns a Woodson-Sanders type player, such that the thought of risking losing him by moving down [x] picks in a deal was abhorrent?

I get the feeling the answer to those questions is no.

whatever, huh?

You said "or they mighta got ****."

You were implying the Steelers didn't receive an offer worth trading out of the spot. We know for a fact the going rate to move up BEHIND the Steelers is a 3rd rounder...why would the Broncos offer a team who is higher a worse offer??

give it a while, and they may tell us....or continue with the conspiracy theories....meh, speculation is fun.

I don't think that would be a big deterrent if they really wanted Lynch. I want to say the Steelers trade partner when they traded up for Shamarko Thomas was Cleveland.

I don't think you can compare Cleveland to other teams. Everyone knows they are likely to **** up their pick, or draft a good player, then destroy him.

I do think the Broncos would rather give an NFC their 3rd pick than an AFC team. If they did call, maybe their offer wasn't as good as a 3rd?

I could be wrong but I don't recall any mock drafts that I saw out of the dozens of different ones over the last month that had Artie Burns in the 1st except maybe 1 if I remember correctly. So yes, rated higher by everyone in the media, draft "experts", this board...everyone except for apparently the Steelers.

Are you telling me Myles Jack is not rated as a higher draft prospect than Burns? Or Billings or Alexander or AShawn Robinson? A LOT of mocks had Alexander going top 20 and almost all of them had Jack going top 5 or a minimum top 10. Again, not just 1 or 2, practically every mock and draft analysis I read had all of these guys rated higher than Burns. And the fact these guys are all still there when we theoretically could have picked up an extra 3rd if we were just patient or willing to trade and STILL grab a player rated higher than Burns IF Burns happened to be gone by 31 is frustrating.

As a Steelers fan, I've accepted the fact the team won't sign high priority free agents and MOST of the time I agree with this. I think I need to add to that list that the Steelers just won't trade down to pick up extra picks because of all the years to do it, this was it.

NFL.com had more than one with us taking Burns. Members here, including me, had mentioned it.

That's not speculation, that's a fact that Denver gave Seattle a 3rd rounder to move up.

Maybe they were willing to give Seattle the 3rd and offered the Steelers something different? Maybe a 4th and 5th or whatever that is worse? I wouldn't have taken anything worse than this year's 3rd. Maybe they offered the Steelers a pick next year?

Maybe, after talking to the Steelers they realized they had to up the offer to Seattle? If you were Denver, which team would you rather trade with? Steelers or Seattle?

Since you don't KNOW, it is speculation. It may be reasonable.

Yes for the last couple of weeks Burns has been making appearances in the first round. And in the end just because the media and fans have someone rated somewhere doesn't mean it's facts. Nobody had Neal going 17 or Joesph 14 because of injury. But teams boards are different. We don't know where these guys are slotted. Some guys are higher lower based on schematic. So just going on mocks and such can be misleading. Back in the day the Steelers had a First round grade on Brian McFadden they got him in the second but they had a first round grade on him. You don't know how teams boards are. We bitching about Billings and Green Bay passed on him too and took Kenny Clark.

And maybe the Steelers valued Burns over the Broncos low third basically a fourth

When you think about the time and resources that go into preparing for the draft, if we didn't know right away who we were picking when we got on the clock I'd be disappointed. Whatever the reason for not trading down is so be it. We don't know if they were engaged in any trade talks with other teams who may have wanted to move up to 1.25 before we even got on the clock. The draft is very fluid as we saw early last night with all the moves. I would have liked the opportunity to pick up additional picks as these rookie contracts are extremely team friendly and allow us to resign our talent without killing the cap.

Hey, everyone, turn on ESPN; the Steelers 2nd round pick is in.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes we do. Denver traded with Seattle, therefore the Broncos simply MUST have called us first and offered us a too-good-to-be-true trade deal, which Tombert **** on because they dont like doing the draft.

The sprint to the podium was ridiculous

Hey! look at us! We know more than everybody! Even though our rivals just punked us in the *** by stealing our pick, let's pretend we meant to take this other guy!

Look, a shiny penny!

No, I'm not telling you Burns is rated higher than those guys. But, the Steelers are. Apparently the other 30 teams who picked last night agree because none of those guys went in the first round. With Jack, it's definitely the chronic knee issue. With the others? Who knows? But for whatever reason, apparently the NFL teams didn't have them rated high enough to go in the first round whether the mocks called for them to or not.

Except for the fact that it was stated by the writer that shall not be named who works for the paper that shall not be named that Colbert and Tomlin told the scouts on Wednesday that Burns was their guy over Jackson .... So, did the Bengals really punk them by taking a player that they weren't going to take anyway?

And, if you look at the draft rankings by grade, most had Jackson and Burns with either the same grade or so close it doesn't matter. Take that with the fact that this regime in the first round will usually draft the guy from a Power 5 conference over a small conference guy and it's believable that they did focus in on Burns over Jackson.

You have had all off-season, and then you sit there and watch 24 teams pick before you. I would think that they have had plenty of time to decide on their pick. Why sit there just for dramatics?????

because every easy-chair GM insists that some guy is still going to fall to us.
or that some team will pull a Ditka/Ricky Williams each and every time we go to draft. these fools obviously value our draft pick selection more than anyone else.

for ***** sake, why didnt the Broncos trade up with Houston? they knew Houston wasnt going to take a QB.

Shouldn't this all be in Coach's thread?

What makes William Jackson better than Artie Burns? Can any of you say with any certainty?
