When the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Dwayne Haskins as a free agent this offseason, I referred to the transaction many times on the Steeler Nation Podcast as a “no risk, high reward” signing. Taking into account that the Steelers got the 15th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, starting his 3rd year of his career, with a cap friendly futures contract near league minimum, it was a no brainer to acquire a college quarterback tied for the 5th most touchdown passes ever thrown in a NCAA Division 1 season with 50.

This ‘no risk’ hiring is already paying dividends. Haskins opened training camp as the 3rd quarterback, ahead of Josh Dobbs. What he’s done in training camp is reinforce the Steelers’ depth chart as he is currently leading all training camp quarterbacks in snaps, yards, touchdowns, yards per attempt, and yards per completion. He is already entrenching himself as the 3rd best quarterback deserving of a roster spot, but now he appears to be pushing Mason Rudolph as the possible #2 quarterback this season.

Brooke Pryor of ESPN tweeted his interview:

Is there an open competition for the Steelers No. 2 QB?

Dwayne Haskins: “I’m trying to make it one.”

Is Thursday your first try out to be the future franchise QB?

Haskins: “I feel like that was the first day I got here.” pic.twitter.com/GtEzTi7Hot

Haskins is already positioning himself as a competitor and stated that his coaches are expecting more of him. Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette added:

Little more on this: Dwayne Haskins says he’s been “told certain things” about his future with the franchise, but he’ll keep that between him and the coaches. https://t.co/TNFg7hbEiT

It seems as though his new head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert have more confidence in him and have shown more support for this young man than he received during his time in Washington. “He’s grown by leaps and bounds”, coach Tomlin stated before practice today, then continues, “He does a good job of communicating with coaches, with players, gaining an understanding of what we’re trying to do schematically and his role in it. Gaining a rapport with the receivers specifically.”

Will the Pittsburgh incubator create the next great NFL quarterback? We don’t know for sure, but we will see his first action on Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys in the Hall of Fame Game, right after the starting quarterback Mason Rudolph finishes his time.

Whether he passes Mason Rudolph as the #2 quarterback, or becomes the heir apparent to Ben Roethlisberger has yet to be seen. But since he seems destined to make this team as a rostered quarterback, Dwayne Haskins is already a successful signing for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Do do yinz think of Haskins in training camp so far? Sound off in the comment section below!

Funny. I was skeptical. I felt he was never pushed at tOSU, but rather was anointed over Burrow without it really being a fair competition. I also felt he came into the league too soon, was too immature and unprofessional and would be a psychological train wreck after his time with the WFT. Just didn't think he'd be able to regroup.
So far, he's proven me wrong. Hopefully he continues to do so.
Edit: Really like his demeanor in the interview today. Humble without appearing weak. Talked about his goals without seeming brash or cocky.

Yeah I don’t mind being wrong about him… maybe he learned his lesson, but lets see what happens if he earns a roster spot… many a suddenly “driven” player falls back into bad habits once the pressure of earning a spot is off…

I think players just get pigeon holed into a certain viewpoint. But some just need a different setting. Then there are those who just continue sinking. So far Haskins is showing that there is talent there. Mindset is everything. He has a decent chance to beat out Rudy IMO if he continues down his present pathway.

Good thing is that the pressure will never be off. I mean if he wins a spot, there's suddenly the pressure of trying to surpass Rudolph and how he's viewed if he can't. If he surpasses Rudolph, the question becomes can he show enough to take over after Ben's gone. If he does take over after Ben's gone, the pressure will be to show that he really has the physical and mental ability to be a starting level QB ... and so on and so on. Plenty of "motivational" hurdles for this young man to attempt to overcome.
Hopefully he stays humble, puts in the work, and plays with a chip on his shoulder. That would be best for him and the team.

Well, let's see how they both play on Thursday and if they improve from game to game. Can't lie, I'd be happy for a Buckeye success story. Even happier that it came with the Steelers!

I don’t think he really has a shot to beat Rudy this season, but if he has a year with the team he might be a two next year cause at this point I totally expect Ben back if he has a good season

I also really think if they really love him and Rudolph has a great preseason they may well trade Rudy for a mid rounder and keep dobbs as a three… assuming that they really think he turned a corner

He would have to completely blow the doors off to beat out Rudolph as the No. 2 and Rudolph would have to look like ****. Haskins was just trying to make the team this year. I don't think it even entered their mind he would be the backup this year. Next year is a different story.

GREAT write up "G" and thank you SIR.

The STEELERS are in a win / win situation here with Haskins. They signed him cheap enough that if he fails it is no big deal. NOW if he succeeds, that would be the BIG win and so far I agree with the author of th article, Haskins is doing the things correctly and the STEELERS currently have a win.

I want the 1st round talent to excell and actually take Mason's job away, lets face it Rudolf hasn't overly impressed even with granting the extentual pass of 2019. Can Haskins achieve #2 status has yet to be seen but if both QBs get the gloves taken off and opened up in the HOF game, some questions will be answered.

GOOD luck to both young men.

A-N-D good luck to Stryker as well.........................................

Salute the nation

But has starting experience. I initially thought the same. But his stats in camp has been very impressive. And Rudy is what he is inconsistent. If I was a betting man I would lay even odds at this point.

Good problem to have. We will see if he gets a hat come week 1 however.

I mean both have starting experience and Rudolph has superior stats…in every category even sack percentage…. Rudy gets shot on here alot but his numbers are pretty good for a young guy…

again guys sometimes aren’t tge same from practice to gametime… go pull up the stuff on kordell back in the day… the press would rave about his practices then he’d look like a deer in the headlights at gametime. People were absolutely certain Duck was a super prospect based off of his practices and he was nothing special on the field….

Honestly id wait until his value peaks… I think he will have a good preseason and the colts might get really desperate…
Rivers making noise about coming back.

True sometimes game situation proves different. I could be wrong... Either or these preseason games will be very interesting.
