The short and long term situation at pass rusher and corner back

Green was an undrafted free agent signing with the Miami Dolphins in 2014, but failed to make the team. This statement from the article does not instill lots of confidence. Another that does not instill lots of confidence is his injury history and his comparison to Spence.

I think the Spence comparison was due to the fact that they both went to Miami and both have suffered major knee injuries ... at least that's the way I read it. The Depot says that after he initially agreed to sign with Miami as an UDFA after the draft, he never signed the contract and didn't go to camp with them. Wonder what that was all about? His injury history is a definite concern, but he's probably just a camp body anyway.

Nope they have not been big players on day one and I never insinuated that they should be but they could have made a move later that week on a guy like Orapko who didn't exactly break the bank and maybe even one of those F/A CB's from the 49'ers would have helped as well. Tell me you wouldn't be feeling better today getting ready for the draft. I know I would have.

That's the thing. Would have a move in FA really made them better, or just made us feel better? I am glad the Steelers don't make moves just to comfort us, because I don't know that signing Orakpo or Morgan or Sheard or whoever really would have made them any better. Didn't Morgan get something like $26 mill over 4 years or something? For 6 sacks? Does 6 sacks make the Steelers better? I think they looked at it and realized they could get better or at the least comparable talent in the draft and not pay silly money.

Shayon Green
Undrafted
Not invited to combine
2014 prospect (last year's draft)

A slow footed, straight line but decent edge defender. Strong. Junk in the trunk and holds up very well at point of attack and sheds extremely well. Good hand use.

Medical issues abound. Two left ACL tears. Left meniscus tear in knee. Wrist dislocation. Lost most of 2009, 2010 and 2011 to injury. Lots of tackles in 2012 and 2013 as a DL/LB but no sacks. Only 3 career sacks in those last 25 straight starts as a Hurricane.

6'-1 3/8"
255 lbs.
Ran a 4.62 at pro day (Miami is notoriously a fast track)
34 reps
29 1/2" vert
9'-1" broad jump
4.47 3-cone
7.40 shuttle

Very good character guy. Not a bad kid to give a chance to (although Miami Dolphins did this for him already).

Not sure what his role would be on this team. He's just not a good enough athlete/footwork to be an effective pass rusher. He'll do his job at OLB, stay in his gap, hold the point, stuff like that. He can probably play special teams. Good weight room guy. Worker.

But I don't see any upside. And his knee could go at any moment and we're likely on the hook for medical coverage/salary.

This is what I saw last year, and I'm a little fuzzy about actual games of where this took place. However, what I saw was the Steelers crowding the box with potential pass rushers, be it linebackers or safeties and at least creating some confusion and getting to the QB or at least hurrying him into bad decisions and we actually got into a turnover situation. Then we would leave that and move to what looked like Tampa two "Safe". Now the problem with Tampa Two is this. It is predicated on big matchup problems up front. You have to have that Suh type Dline guy that creates a huge mismatch and be able to get pressure from a front seven individually winning the battles.
Now here is where I get real scared if Tomlin was more involved in the defense last year, which of those guys is a crowd and confuse the line of scrimmage guy and which is a Tampa Two guy: Lebeau and Tomlin. And who is gone. Did Leabeau lose his instincts to use the zone blitz and overwhelm an offense and create confusion, or was he trumped by a head coach who prefers Tampa Two.
With our offense I can tell you one thing, we are far better off with a risky give up big plays, but create turnover defense then we are a sit back and let them chew clock move down the field defense.
Last year I fully documented what this team did when it created turnovers and when it didn't
