I suspected that the Steelers have been tagged an unusually high amount for OPI, but wanted to make sure so I tracked down a site that keeps track of all penalties, for every team, including breaking it down by penalty, home/away, etc.

https://www.nflpenalties.com/?year=2019

Can be tweeked to look for every penalty, particular penalties, yardage against, yardage for, yardage difference (net yards) - everything. Learned a few things:

  • We may think the Steelers get hit with a lot of pre-snap penalties, but in terms of false start, the Steelers are middle of the pack with 7 false starts against, vs. 6 by the opposition.
  • In comparison, Houston has 16 false starts against and Buffalo and Cleveland 13 each.
  • Steelers called for offensive holding 10 times this year, among the lowest in the league.
  • For comparison, Jacksonville called for 21 offensive holding penalties, Washington with 19, Atlanta, Minnesota and New Orleans 18, Dallas, Seattle with 16. Seems to be an NFC penalty.
  • In terms of penalty yardage overall, Steelers among the league-best with +88 yards in penalties, called for and against.
  • League leader in net penalty yardage - Green Bay. League worst - Cleveland. Figures.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing this! This will come in very handy for debates/flamewars.

Green Bay-biggest home field advantage as far as calls in the league. It’s actually comical. I ******* hate that team.

I'd like to see game altering and meaningless penalty numbers and who leads those catagories...........

I'm pretty sure who the beneficiary would be in those catagories.....

Salute the nation

Johnson has had two bad OPI calls against and last night is as bad as it gets. What made it worse is the very next play the Dolphins DB had an incredible amount of contact on the Steelers' receiver and no call.
