Judge Dismisses State Charges Against Paul Manafort, Clearing the Way for Pardon

A New York judge on Wednesday morning “hastily dismissed” state mortgage fraud charges against onetime Trump 2016 campaign chairman Paul Manafort–paving the way for a presidential pardon.

Manhattan Supreme Justice Maxwell Wiley tossed the 16-count indictment against Manafort without discussion or explanation during a hearing which reportedly lasted all of 90 seconds.

The dismissal comes as an implicit rebuke of Manhattan District Attorney (DA) Cyrus Vance, Jr., who had prosecuted Manafort in an effort to ensure that President Donald Trump would not be able to pardon the Republican lobbyist.

New internal polling by the Trump campaign suggests Democrats in pro-Trump districts should avoid supporting impeachment or risk losing re-election. The new poll, released Tuesday, surveyed 900 likely voters in the 30 congressional districts that President Donald Trump won in 2016 but are currently occupied by Democrats.

According to the survey, voters in those districts oppose impeachment by 10 percentage points, 53-43, and would support a new candidate over the Democratic incumbent by 11 points, 47-36. A plurality of voters, 38%, said that if their congressperson supported impeachment, it would make them less likely to re-elect that individual. Just 29% said supporting impeachment would make them more likely to vote for the incumbent.

Yet nobody - not here, nor in the House - has said a single word defending Trump's actions. It was true the weeks and months leading up to this day, and it's true in the House chamber. Trump has not brought forth a single witness or document in his defense. Because what he did was indefensible. He got caught, panicked and has done nothing but obstruct the process since then. Pretty sad to see the GOP - and the Trump base - torture themselves trying to wiggle out of it.
