Australian prime minister abandons greenhouse gas target

Australia's prime minister on Monday abandoned plans to legislate to limit greenhouse gas emissions to head off a revolt by conservative lawmakers.

Malcolm Turnbull on Monday conceded that he could not get legislation through the House of Representatives where his conservative coalition holds only a single-seat majority.

He said although most government lawmakers supported the target of reducing Australia's greenhouse gas emissions by 26 percent below 2005 levels, that support was not enough.

"Even with strong support in the party room, if a small number of people are not prepared to vote with the government on a measure, then it won't get passed," Turnbull told reporters.

Judge Reverses Himself, Hands President Trump Big DACA Win

U.S. District Judge John Bates said the government does not have to accept new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals requests, going back on his initial order from Aug. 3.

Illegal immigrants who were brought over as children, known as “Dreamers,” can renew their DACA applications, but no new requests will be processed

Bates initially ordered U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to restart DACA by Aug. 23.

USCIS warned restarting the program would force the agency to look at the uptick of roughly 50,000 new DACA applications instead of focusing on legal immigrant and guest worker applications, The Washington Times reported on Aug. 15.

Opponents of illegal immigration — and supporters of the president — applauded the ruling.

President Trump set to roll back Obama-era regulation on coal emissions

The Trump administration is set to unveil a proposed replacement for Obama-era climate change rules that will impose looser, state-based regulations on coal-fired power plants rather than pushing them towards closure.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to propose that individual states should decide how, or even if, they should stem carbon dioxide emissions from coal plants.

Donald Trump, who has pledged to end what he calls the “war on coal”, is expected to unveil the plan at an event in West Virginia, a major coal-producing state, on Tuesday.
