So, Booted, how do you feel about the sitting President literally obsessed with renaming massive, historical bodies of water, the Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, the Atlantic and Pacific oceans? Is this what you expect from the top leader and elected official in the country? Holding a press conference from the White House today, discussing such things? This is where you want his attention to be, amidst a months-long standoff with Iran, and all the issues facing Americans right now? This seems completely normal and acceptable behavior to you?

What's your take on it, Booted, I'm genuinely curious.
 
And yeah, his little quip about renaming the oceans was likely a joke, the type of stupid joke a deranged megalomaniac makes while sitting at the Resolute Desk, in the middle of signing an executive order *actually* renaming one of the Great Lakes out of spite. A petty, small-minded fool.

It accomplishes nothing. I understand why people love it and why people hate it. I think it’s a silly political sideshow that doesn’t do anything to solve any of the real problems this country faces. Trump could truly be great, but his pettiness is way below the office he holds.

It's just red meat for his base, the rest of the world ignores him, as they should. Neither New York State, and most certainly not Canada, will go along with it. Just like the Gulf of Mexico will be the Gulf of Mexico in perpetuity, long after Trump is mercifully gone.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed the directive. He stated on social media that "naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now and always." Other Canadian leaders, including Industry Minister Melanie Joly and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, characterized the move as "real foolishness."

The Democratic governor of New York immediately announced that the state would not recognize or implement the name change. Lake Ontario forms a vast portion of New York's northern coastline.

There is no international body that dictates the naming of shared waters. While Trump can direct the U.S. Interior Department to update its domestic Geographic Names Information Service database, he cannot legally compel foreign nations or individual U.S. states to change their geographic charts.

The lakebed and shorelines are split strictly down the middle by the international border. Management of the waters is governed jointly by New York and Ontario, alongside bilateral bodies like the International Joint Commission.

Canadian leaders pointed out that the name "Ontario" is over 400 years old. It stems from the Huron/Wyandot word "oniatarí:io," meaning "lake of shining waters," predating the existence of both countries.
