New Orleans Saints receiver Brandin Cooks is frustrated by the NFL's sudden crackdown on the bow-and-arrow touchdown celebration that he began as a sign of his faith in God.

Cooks himself has never been fined or penalized for the gesture, which has become so associated with him that the NFL Players Association and a partner company created an emoji of Cooks shooting an arrow. Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman was hit with both a penalty and a fine two weeks ago, with the NFL's head of officiating Dean Blandino explaining that it "mimics a violent act."

Cooks said he plans to keep doing the celebration in some form, although he doesn't want to hurt his team by drawing a flag.

"Well, there are different forms of doing it. You just can't shoot [the arrow]," Cooks told NOLA.com. "I'm still going to pull it out. Whatever happens after that happens. I don't want to do anything to jeopardize my team, but I'll figure something out."

Cooks has adopted the nickname, "The Archer," which he uses on social media.

The third-year receiver explained to NOLA.com last year that the bow-and-arrow gesture was inspired by a Bible passage in which a boy named Ishmael used his archery skill to survive in the desert.

Cooks further explained to the New Orleans Advocate on Tuesday that he found another Bible verse that spoke to him: Psalms 144:6, a form of which he then recited.

"Send forth lightning and scatter your enemy, and shoot your arrows and rout them," Cooks said. "I just remember it sticking with me for such a long time, I remember thinking, maybe I can do something with this."

Cooks expressed his frustration to both media outlets on Tuesday while doing promotional interviews for Mercedes-Benz.

"I've been doing it for three years now, and there was never a complaint about it," Cooks told the Advocate. "Now, all of a sudden, there is. It just reminds me that, it's almost as if they try to take so much away from us, but for something like this, that means so much to someone that has nothing to do with violence, it's frustrating. I'll definitely continue to speak my opinion about it, and if they have a problem with it, so be it."

Cooks added to NOLA.com: "It's one of those things that they want to fine anything and get their little ... whatever they want. They're not going to stop me."

I absolutely do not get this one in any way. The "knife to the throat" gesture is one thing. I can at least understand banning that.

But making a movement simulating shooting an arrow? Isn't the gesture done while mimicking shooting an arrow up in the air?

The NFL needs to check itself. Much more of this nonsense and I will just give it up altogether.

Norman even did it on the sideline outside of the field of play and was fined. Redickuluous.

mimicking a violent act, my ***. If they were pointing it at a person, and you had nothing better to do than look for **** to fine, maaaybe.

Kiesel had an arrow shooting celebration after a sack. I remember him being penalized for going to his knee to do it and I thought that was ridiculous.

I agree with the no fun league. However, how about a player on a struggling team concentrates on how he will get into the end zone instead of what he will do once he is.

I hadn't heard this; all I keep hearing is how it is more popular than ever and that is why the Fuhrer keeps getting mad raises.

There have been a lot of National articles lately saying that viewership is down something like 11% this season.

Don't get it. Wesley Walls used to imitate a shot-gun a.k.a. duck hunt I believe. Give it a rest.

I think Jesse James should start pulling out the six guns.

Interesting read from Awful Announcing on declining NFL ratings: http://awfulannouncing.com/2016/why...eagues-greed-has-finally-caught-up-to-it.html

http://www.espn.com/dallas/nba/stor...cuban-says-greedy-nfl-10-years-away-implosion

"Just watch. Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way. I'm just telling you, when you've got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns on you. That's rule No. 1 of business."

Mark Cuban predicted this 2 and a half years ago when it seemed like the NFL could do no wrong. His cautionary words are looking pretty smart now.

As for the lowering ratings, a lot of people are tuned into Red Zone as well.

It is a terrible model having 8 games on at the same time when they only play once a week. I like the morning game option on Sundays when they play in England. It then gives 4 games on Sunday to watch. Monday nights should always be an east coast west coast matchup, like they do week 1. Plus a game on Thursday and now at least there are 7 of the 16 games that are viewable.

This week alone, the only games I have an interest in are:

Steelers Dolphins
Ravens Giants
Bengals Pats
Eagles Wash

And they all play the same ******* time. At least stagger one East coast matchup to the afternoon...

The best anology would be to use the Masshole line of thinking. If you say it enough, then it must be true. The articles I've seen have been stating how low the ratings have been dropping. The presidential debate was blamed by the NFL as the reason that game was so low. But a piece was put together showing how the nfl has been trending downward on its ratings over the last year and a half. The nfl is saying it isn't so, so it must be true their ratings aren't dropping.
