Dolphins sign CB Brice McCain (2 years, $5.5M; $3M guaranteed):
Brice McCain was awful for Houston in 2013. He signed with the Steelers after being released and rebounded nicely. He didn't play great, or anything, but he was a somewhat decent starter down the stretch, though he struggled during the middle of the season.

This is a fairly decent signing. McCain will give Miami some much-needed depth at the cornerback position in the wake of Cortland Finnegan's retirement. It would be a mistake for the Dolphins to rely on McCain to be the starter next year, so they still need to add a cornerback in free agency or the 2015 NFL Draft.

>>Coach's comments: McCain had a good year for us in 2014. 3 interceptions, and 1 fumble recovery. His coverage for the most part was solid. The Steelers could not afford to keep McCain in free agency, who at the very least would be a solid #3 CB, or a starter in 2015. Why? We didn't have 2.75 Million a year in cap space.

Or did we? Cam Thomas fans speak up. Had the Steelers cut Thomas, they save $2,000,000 in cap space. Then we could have kept McCain, who is a much more valuable player.

We'll see if Colbert's move here was the correct one. I think the Steelers made a mistake.

I agree, they should have kept him.

This free agency has been a kick in the pants. Losing 2 starters always hurts, but with us, it happened at our two weakest positions OLB and CB.

Maybe the Steelers feel B.W. Webb can step into McCain's role? Its possible, and he's still young as well so we will see

speaking of CB's

Vikings signed CB Terence Newman, formerly of the Bengals, to a one-year, $2.5 million deal

why didn't we grab a guy like this?

To best Miami's offer we would've been paying him close to 3 million per year. I don't think the Steelers had that kind of value on him.

we have the money, even without cutting Thomas. Apparently the F.O. just thinks that he isn't worth it

And it's OK to take that position. As long as you either have someone on the team who can replace his production or you find someone who can replace that production either in FA or the draft. This year's draft looms large because they are going to have to find kids, defensive backs especially, who can contribute right away. Or at least early in the season.

But they value Cam Thomas at 2.5 million a year? I think we could have kept McCain, and the cost in space would be about 500-700k more.

This tells me the Steelers value Thomas more, even though McCain clearly has more value to 2014 team, and would be a projected starter in 2015 while Thomas rides the bench.

I liked him. Not in a dating sort of way, but in the field of play way..................
SHOULD have kept him as his cost for two years was minimal as to what he brought to the field. Who could we get for same value as to talent skill tranlation?? $$$ to field

Salute the nation

Im looking and expecting Cortez to rebound this year.........he had a bad season, adjusting to the illegal contact rule emphasis and injuries. He got benched but he still has talent. Im not ready to write him off

Just hope the alternative plan works because there is no safety net.

He played well for us last year but he isn't worth 3 mil a year. Not for a guy who doesn't have a consistant track record and may not even start. If we over paid him and he stunk it up I'm sure there would then be a thousand threads on here slamming tombert for that too.

i'm gonna read berm's 14 threads today

I'd set his over under at two threads started.

The only way he posts 14 times is if I start 14 threads. He is a fan or shall I say a bit of a stalker type in my threads :)

well all a'yall get to postin', its boring as hell at work today :D

Complete BS. They had the cash and chose to let him walk. This FO has a bad habit of letting this happen with their good CB.

Not a McCain fan at all. I think we can improve his spot in the draft. See how long he lasts in Miami.

Keenan Lewis?

I have heard that when the Steelers traded up to snag Shamarko Thomas whom the Raiders were eying then believed Tyler Wilson or BW Webb would be there for their other 4th round pick. They both then went off the board and the Steelers panicked and took Landry Jones.

I guess we will see but Webb did squat last year for us so I do not have high hopes for this year.

I'm with coach, this was the mistake.

Where do you get such great insider football information? PFT?

They could just be giving him time to develop and think he can make a jump this year, after all James Harrison took years to develop so can't say anything definitively yet (not saying Webb will be as good at CB as Harrison was at OLB, just pointing out not everyone develops in the same amount of time). So they could possibly have been seeing things in practice throughout the year last year that made them hopeful for the next season, but again we shall see.
