The head coach search

On the QBs that are out there that we could sign as a stopgap until the 2027 draft I’d say Willis or Mack Brown.
System really matters and great coaching matters.
Mack Brown played well in relief of Purdy in a great offensive system under Kyle Shanahan and Klay Kubiak.
Take Brock Purdy, the last pick of the 2022 draft, same draft as Kenny Pickett. Look at how well he’s developed under that system.
Then there is Malik Willis the backup in GB. Played well as a backup to Love in a great offensive system under Matt LeFleur.
System does matter and can get the most out of these marginally talented QBs.
Now if we hire Shula and he brings in Sheelhase as the OC, I think you can take one of those QBs and help him shine.
It’s talent of course but it’s also very important to have a great system and coaching.
The correct HC and OC can and will help Will Howard as well.
I agree, except to say that Mack Brown is the retired college coach for UNC and Texas. Mac Jones is who you're talking about.

Think of the Raiders coaching search like this... since the 2000 season (26 years, counting 00) the Browns have had 12 head coaches
The Raiders have had 14... though that isnt counting Grudens second stint with them... and since Art shell was fired in 94 after a 6 year run, only two head coaches have coached longer than 3 years.. Gruden in 98-01, and Gruden again from 18-21...

If the Browns HC job is toxic, the Raiders are radioactive..

Edited... my 12 turned into a 15 somehow🤦🏻‍♂️
The raider organization is reaping everything they deserve..

Tomlins agent advised him not to take a job this year because the only coach that will work under him is Austin . Can't attract young exciting talent.
The guy is gone. As he should be. But, I don't understand this need to keep bringing him up some folks have. Must be TDS - Tomlin Derangement Syndrome.
And, what about the fact that ARll doesn't like paying his Asst Coaches the going rate in the modern era. Plenty of articles coming up over the last week about that and how it has to change for any Steelers HC to attract top assistants/coordinator talent

Philip Rivers is easily one of the most cerebral football players to have ever played the game. Just saying.

Steelers still have his rights. Compensation would/ might have to be given. No?
Yes for this year for sure. Possibly next and even possibly longer depending on the language in his contract according to one of the real inside guys.

“When the topic of Brian Flores was brought up for a potential head coach candidate, Pettine was asked what he thought of Flores, and the ex-Vikings coach held his tongue.

"Uh, probably not many that I would prefer to share... I mean, we didn't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, and that's why I spent this past year on offense... I'll take the high road on that one."

My two and a half cents:

With his past it would take very minimal for me to check mark him off the list.

Yeah I read earlier today what Mike Pettine had to say.
That is very concerning and plays right into the Flores tenure in Miami.
I never liked him as a potential HC for us only as a DC.
I wouldn’t hire him as our HC.
Another candidate I don’t want see hired is Anthony Weaver.
Had him here in Houston for three seasons and his defenses were not good.
His defenses in Miami nothing to brag about either.
They say he has a great presence and commands the room. That he’s a leader of men. That’s great but there’s so much more to this job.
To me he’s Tomlin 2.0 and we shouldn’t want any part of that moving forward.

Man this site has gone to hell I thought getting a new coach would set the place a fire! This is something we have only done 3 times since the ‘69!!! I think it's the candidates no one is stirring up any excitement! I think more than anything that’s why Rooney’s better hire offense! Since Ben retired we have been in the doldrums! The seats are getting emptier and emptier! If he takes an offensive head coach at least getting defensive coordinators is easy go hire Foote away from Tampa bay. Developing qb’s should be the top priority of the new head coach! The San Francisco staff can turn purty into a starter that’s like turn water into wine! I think the Rooney’s forget chuck Noll played center for Paul brown and coached under Sid gillman. He knew offense! Either kubiak brother makes since here they both have solid NFL backgrounds going back to their dad’s playing. They have come up through the best coaching staff in a decade in the nfl. Klint is probably more responsible that the head coach for Seattle’s success and had the saints humming before everybody got hurt. Seattle stunk last year they brought in klint and the offense took off. Considering everything, the Rooney’s going with a first time defensive coach as HC again is a big gamble. The teams not loaded both in talent or coaches like when Cowher left. We have neither. We have some good young players but that coin could flip if they bring in a coaching staff that flounders. GoSteelers!

I think most here are a nervous wreck with Art Rooney II conducting the search.
We’re excited but also very nervous. Art could really **** this up. Hoping he hires the right man and not someone who talks a big game.

Mr Rooney: Hi Mike it feels good to get you in for this up close interview

Mike McCarthy: Hi Mr. Rooney you may call me big Mike. You know I have roots in Pittsburgh. Or was it that I saw Roots on a TV screen in Pittsburgh. (shrugs) um anyway. I’m excited to uphold this standard I keep hearing about.

Mr Rooney: Oh ok… big Mike ..tell me why you are the right man for the job?

Big Mike: Well as you might be able to remember I mentored AARon and you welcome.

Mr Rooney: That was impressive Big Mike obviously.

Big Mike: There is more I was instrumental in developing QBs err um a QB .

Mr Rooney: Who was that Big Mike?

Big Mike: AARon and you welcome.

Mr Rooney: (stares at Big Mike wondering if he is some way handicapped he could be the first Steelers head coach hired with a disability!)

Big Mike : I feel at the very least I can uphold your Tomlinships, I feel I am the right man for the job.

Mr. Rooney: You are a smooth talker Big Mike, the last Mike was a smooth talker, heh heh. Give me your best cliche.

Big Mike: Oh um I coached in Dallas for the Cowboys and the only thing from Texas is steers and queers. You don’t see any horns on this here head now do ya? ( points to his head)

Big Mike: Hehe serious now I have a post season record of 11 and 11.

Mr. Rooney: You’re hired.

I think it will he Shula.

I think we should stick with a hybrid 34.

And I hope the HC hires an incredible OC and DC that he will lose in a few years to being head coaches.

And it would be awesome if Shula invited 88 year old Dick L. In as a defensive consultant. That guys knows more about Steeler defensive football than any.

I'll buy a paragraph for $300, Alex!!!

Have the Rams lost yet???
Then we want the game to be competitive so we see both the coaching options to be competitive throughout.

I know some posters want one or the other but I am greedy I want both. Which is why I want Shula as the HC and Nate with a little less experience the OC, sheet make him the assistant HC I don’t care get them both in. You want these beautiful minds.

As I said elsewhere you have a game tomorrow. Yet no HC is hired. If they really were leaning on someone from the list they have talked to would have been easy to hire them and start attacking the offseason. I think they are really liking one or both.

If they get both - why go defensive HC again?

Scheelhaase is the McVay clone from all the data on reading.

Shula makes diamonds out of coal.

I'm torn but still sticking with Coach "Steelhouse"!!!

I know that is a good question and my thought process is two fold:

1 Nate is green and his mind isn’t in question but his experience leading a locker room is a little unknown. That Miami HC was known to be a beautiful mind in regards to offensive X and Os so that gives me a little pause. The great unknown so yeah living a little in the failure fear.

2 Shula isn’t coming over in a lateral move and I really like what he did defensively. More so that with a low cost personnel he squeezed those lemons until dry getting the most out of them.

I do realize that the last ten minus cheat was all offensive coach backgrounds so that makes me want Nate a little more for a HC but that green factor is still there. I think if they can get both you really addressed every aspect of the team well.

Ultimately I am for what gets them both in the building…

Austin is interviewing with the Commanders for their DC job.

😳😅

So, he will be the closest to 5minutes of all our coaching staff………….

Good Rosenberg.!!!!

Salute the nation
