The Duck

Hodges has averaged 165.3 yards per game as a starter. You're deflating his numbers by including the two games he entered as a backup.

To which I respond...
I did my usual half-assed statistical dive. And you may be surprised at what it demonstrates.

FLY DUCK FLY!

Steelers’ Devlin Hodges outshines heralded 2019 NFL rookie QBs

The NFL’s official draft page included 21 quarterback prospects in advance of this past spring’s draft.

Devlin Hodges was not on the list.
Not drafted — and not even thought highly enough to monitor — was a four-year starter from Samford in suburban Birmingham, Ala., named Devlin Hodges.

As the year’s end draws near, none has led his team to more wins than Hodges.

Given a $1,000 signing bonus after going undrafted and not even signed as an undrafted free agent — he would make the 90-man offseason roster as a tryout — Hodges has directed the Pittsburgh Steelers to wins in each of his past four appearances.

Hodges is 3-0 as a starter, and he led a comeback win off the bench in the second half of the Nov. 24 win at Cincinnati.

Of the 11 drafted quarterbacks, one was cut and ended up on a rival’s practice squad. Seven have thrown a pass during the 2019 regular season and only six have started at least one game.

Hodges is one of two undrafted rookie quarterbacks to throw a pass this season; both have started at least one game, but only Hodges has won one.

That’s more than can be said of the 10 QB prospects that NFL.com tabbed as worthy tracking into the draft but who did not get drafted. Of that group, only one is even on an active roster currently (four others are on teams’ practice squads).

He's done well so far, but it's not good enough. He needs a running game. They need to solve that and it will help him immensely. I don't see us winning against the Ravens or bills with the status quo or rushing effectiveness.

I know it is mission difficult, but not ready to say they can't or won't win. I think it is a wait and see. That O-line is run blocking capable, it is teams stacking the box. But that will continue to give the team passing opportunities.

Same thing is true of Rudolph... its better to add the two partial games together since he played roughly a half in each then divide his total by 4 instead of 5 games... far better representation

The reality is that both of them were producing yards about the same as many of their like aged peers at the position, most of Lamar Jacksons games have had less than 200 yards passing and were bolstered by one or two huge plays...

People were spoiled by Ben... 300 yard passing days aren’t easy to get as a young qb... duck is fine... the offensive woes are because of the offense as a whole, not the qb... had Rudolph not melted down and started throwing picks in Cleveland then regressed, he’d have been equally fine... around 200 yards, a td, and minimal picks is what they are going to get out of these guys for a bit... might have a huge game or a bad game here and there... got to just stick with it

Its too late in the season to start playing musical chairs at qb.. if duck continues to barely produce you don’t belittle him and try to force him into bad throws... stick it out...

I just know that we are probably three bad plays from the less football savvy yinzers calling for lynch... or one great game from them demanding the ben be cut asap... lol

Again the offensive woes need to be addressed by better scheme design... trust the wrs some, run more motions, route options, and crossing routes... I know that early on some blunders led to picks or near picks but you cannot just abandon them. Do more quick outs and slants... ducks arm isn’t bens but its not like he is brian greise either... he is average... he can make all the throws...

This is correct. I’m not in the Duck or MR camp. The biggest difference is what 6 is doing with the ball and his play.

Duck has beaten the last 3 overall #1 picks, even if Garrett didn't play and Rudolph beat the #1 pick before that, Goff.

So wig is the duck deflator?

No. My half-assed statistical analysis showed that he is actually a very efficient QB. He needs to start churning out a few more yards, but he is surprisingly, even shockingly effective.

Any QB's you Duck remind you of I see a bit of Garcia Flutie and Garrard, mobile decent arm, looks like is playing with a chip on shoulder being D 3 usdfa and each game getting better with this group of WR's.

reminds me of bubby brister
was just a kindergarten kid when Brister was on the Steelers any 1995-current QB's he reminds you off.
Unles Mason improvers his mobility he looks like another Rob Johnson teases you with the zize arm strength but needs a full year to look at film and break down spiesd and cover 2.

Pro Football Focus gives high praise for Devlin Hodges after the Steelers Week 14 win

The Pittsburgh Steelers were winners in Week 14, and a large reason was the play of Devlin Hodges.

Duck Hodges was efficient as efficient gets vs. the Cardinals, completing 16 of his 19 pass attempts, but he didn’t just protect the football. He was decisive with the ball and delivered several key passes down the field to keep drives going and put points on the board.

Devlin Hodges continues to make strides on the job with his ability to evade pressure, with his quickness being a considerable advantage. The Pittsburgh coaching staff did an admirable job tailoring the offense to his abilities with quick strikes to the flat, deep shots and a major focus moving the ball on the ground. The simple fact that the Steelers are right in the middle of the playoff race this deep into the season after losing Ben Roethlisberger speaks volumes to their preparation.

As for Hodges, he displayed all of his plus traits during a scramble drill late in the fourth quarter when he found Diontae Johnson on a comeback for a 17-yard gain on 3rd & 13 that paved the way for a 25-yard field goal.

Duck to the Pro Bowl!

The hottest rookie QB in the league currently isn’t on the Pro Bowl ballot. @PSchrags makes the case for a write-in candidate:

It's OK to do your half-assed analysis of the statistics, I enjoy your posts...just make sure the stats are accurate to begin with.

Correct.

Wig seems to be a Duck Detractor, although he won't admit it.

I like what I've seen from the kid. It will be interesting when they are forced to take off his training wheels, though. Maybe as early as Sunday night.
