The Dick Lebeau defense to the rescue

This game really reminded us of why it was time for Dick to go. When the Steelers started throwing the ball quickly, they ate his 10 yard cushion defense for lunch.
 
In the past we were the "injection" other teams needed.................LAST night Dick's "D" was the injection we needed.

man everyone wants to pick on dick. give him the right players and he is still one of the best minds in football. the game has not passed him by. 80 years old and still relevant. his defense held us to 3 touchdowns in the red zone on 7 trys.
 
Ben has practiced against that defense for years..and next up is Green Bay who employ a similar defense.. Hopefully another good game will kick start this offense and instill confidence.

His defense has been figured out. Belicheat figured it out years ago. Quick passes rather than going for the big play.
 
I'm sure deep down every Steeler and most fans were probably thinking the same thing. In a way its kind of sad, he has had an amazing career, but stayed around too long, father time is a *****, Its impossible to be your best at 80 years old.
Regardless i got nothing but love and respect for the guy.
 
That's not the same defense he ran here, Tennessee runs mostly man not zone.
Not sure why the need to kick a great coach after he leaves, especially one that helped win two Super Bowls. Lebeau's defense is our last defense to beat Brady.

I would say Dick's defense put more than enough pressure on Ben, hey stopped the run and the secondary covers much better than the game showed. We made some important catches on third down to keep our offense moving. Dick was run out of town when Tomlin did not address the defense, he had some great years here and deserves better from this forum.
 
I love Dick Lebeau, he is a great guy, and I was surprised he wasn't ever given another shot at a HC position somewhere. That being said, his defense was always vulnerable to the quick throw underneath, and still is. Both things can be true, I can love the guy, and appreciate what he did while here, and still say his scheme sucks in today's nfl.

He's not running that scheme anymore. When we beat NE in 2011 we played man most of that game. We're still playing majority zone defense.
I'd take him over Butler in a second with the talent we have.
He's still the only DC we've had to beat NE in the Brady era.

Ben looked like Brady in the 2nd half playing against our defenses of the past.
 
I wondered how long it would take for yinz to remember the old time to Retire LeBeau threads.

I thought it was cool though....last night, every defensive player on that field had a ton of love and respect for that 80 year old legend.
 
LeBeau is a ******* icon. No shame at all for the man.

His defense, though, has been blueprinted in how to beat.
That's why we abandoned the run and put the game on Ben's shoulders. Short, quick passes - the occasional deep throw and a few runs sprinkled in here and there.
 
Dick is as iconic as the Cowher chin and Tomlins Shades! With the talent they had during his time in Pittsburgh, I think we got the most potential out of all his players. The unfortunate thing was that I feel in hindsight Pittsburgh held onto it's defenders way too long. So eventually that entire side of the ball were all too old and not enough fresh youth to turn over the reigns. I'm not saying it would have been easy but their draft picks weren't getting plugged in until 2nd or 3rd year if they were lucky. Pittsburgh culture has a hard time with letting go of the past in many ways. Although the Rooney family are progressive in some ways like hiring young talent such as Cowher and Tomlin and parting ways with Lebeau.

2/3 of the teams they play that defense is just fine and they are a young team. They are condending for a playoff spot the Steelers are supposed to be contending for a title. Last night they did not look like it. For most of the season the Steelers have not either.

Vanilla defense with 10 yard cushion and no pass rush - they can have it
 
Lebeau's defense was effective because most qbs aren't patient enough to attack it the right way. Brady always has been. I can still see James Farrior blitzing, coming in clean, and Brady dumping it right in to the spot that Farrior left vacant., all the way down the field. Most qbs want to play hero ball at some point, and Dick ate them for lunch. You might remember that we didn't have to play Brady during either of out title runs.

Too bad our best offensive showing had to be against him.
