I thought to myself is there any defender on the team that you know will be good by 2018?

Only Heyward. That's it. We are going to need to pass on Bell and use all 20 million in cap space plus the first, second, and third round pick here.

While size, and speed are nice draft football players. Tough guys with character.

Not going to say we have no one as Burns and Davis have both shown signs of what they are capable of. Shazier will hopefully be healthy and so will Bud. Hargrave will be better. But, last night was all about the defense falling apart in the last 5 to 10 minutes of the game. They left 2 gaps wide the **** open and Zeke ran right through both for long TD's. It was pathetic. No discipline to maintain gaps as they always talk about.

We need to solidify a front 3 or 4 that can and will play on every damn down. 2 linemen in there gets run over all the time and we get no pass rush with it. I hate that formation.

Wrong! - the Steelers have PROVEN they have no clue on how to draft defense in the last 10 years. More wasted high draft picks on D is futile. We need 40 points a game to compete in the NEW NFL.

Go ALL OFFENSE in the 1st 3 rds of the draft. another true #1 WR, a true #1 TE and OL studs to protect our new QB coming in.

Grab FA's and scrubs on D off the waiver wire - they can't be any worse than the stiffs they've been drafting #1.

What he said.

What he said.

Spike has been saying that for a bit. It's an offense catered game now. And going back on yesterday's game the Steelers did enough to be in a position to win

Shazier, Heyward, Tuitt. That's it. I think Burns and Davis can grow, so I have optimism there. Hargrave maybe? Still think Justin Gilbert should be playing some.

You still need a good enough defense to stop a great offense. Our guys can't stop ****. We will never win like this. You will sooner or later run into a team in the playoffs who has a great defense and then you're sunk.

This offense isn't even all the great. They spend large amounts of a game sputtering around when they should have zero trouble moving the ball between the 20s.

I actually see potential in the D... but the mindset which this coaching staff has gradually installed over the years has been dismal. Mental errors, undisciplined, that's coaching. Until that changes, I don't believe we'll see anything consistent. Now they're giving up HUGE plays every game which makes winning extremely difficult. I can't see how this staff keeps their positions. Eventually, the NFL itself demands change.

We went offense in free agency with Green. How's that working out? Yes-- Ben, and crew can be great but what good are they if your defense gives up 35 points at home, and your coach has an IQ close to Joe Rockhead?

I said draft offense - FA defense. Completely the opposite of what this regime does! Green wasn't anybody I wanted.

The front office needs shook up, fire all the scouts that keep picking these underachievers year after year on defense at the very least. But Steelers arrogance will never admit they make draft mistakes and fans clutch their pearls that Blitzburgh is just a player or two away every year.

The Steelers are dead last in sacks again this year and now can't stop the run or the pass. The defense is at least 5 years away from being any kind of effective and Ben's last years will be wasted without more blue chip weapons coming in.

It falls on Colbert. How many more swing and misses from him until he gets the boot. He got lucky w AB big deal...

We need a real NT. That last run up the middle was just terrible.

I think the defense can be fixed in two years but only if Tomlin and Colbert are gone. And Butler too. He has added nothing.

1 ) Do not re-sign Bell. Try to get something for him. Use his 12-15 million it woudl cost to re-sign him elsewhere to help the team out for the future ( 2018 cap space and beyond )

2 ) Let Jarvis Jones walk ( Hope for a comp pick in 2018 ). Thank Timmons for his service and let him walk too. ( Hope for a 2018 comp pick )

3 ) Use the 20 million in cap space for the best Edge Rusher and Defensive back not franchised in 2017 free agency! I think one good edge rusher, combined with Dupree, Heyward and maybe Chickillo is good enough.

4 ) Use the top three draft picks for DT/NT, RB, and either Saftey or Corner, depending on the player signed for 10M a season in free agency. In a four man front a distruptive DT or run stuffer is a major need.

5 ) Hope and pray that Dupree and Burns are the real deal.

Everyone one of our D coaches should be on the hot seat, even the D coordinator. I see nothing from them. WHoever is making the call to only use 2 d-linemen on downs 2 through possibly 4 should be fired immediately. And, that actually might be Tomlin making that dumbass call.

The only real issue I have with your list is point number one. Who do you expect to replace Bell with? A 34 year old player, who finished last year hurt, and is hurt again this year? If I'm not mistaken, didn't he recently have surgery too? D-Will cannot shoulder the load for a just even a single season. And letting Bell walk then carries over into your other plans. You'll either have to spend a premium pick on a back or spend money in FA on a back, thus taking away from what should be spent and used on the defense. Bell's going nowhere, as he shouldn't anyway.

1-Bell is a free agent next year. only thing we can get from him is a comp pick. we don't really have a proven back up if he walks next year

2- agreed

3- we will not have the money for that. we are going to resign or franchise Bell

4- it will probably be another draft of top 3 picks going on the defensive side of the ball

5-and Davis

This sums up the defense.

YPG allowed 380.8 (25th)

YPC allowed 4.3 (T18)

PPG allowed 23.8 (18)

Sacks 13 (last)

INTs 4 (2nd from last)

Defensive touchdowns 0. Tied for last. 19 teams have one or more

Fumbles recovered 2 (3rd from last)

Total TOs 17 (last)

I feel the current CBA that limits practice/coaching time is a big hindrance and will continue to be. It takes away coaching and practice time. It becomes a 'cram' session for each practice to ensure players are in position. They forget to tackle and forget their fundamentals. I also feel they're looking for that highlight reel hit vs simply stopping the play.

That would be true, except, it affects all the other teams too. Many seem to be fine. IMHO, it is a matter of a) Team discipline, i.e. every man taking care of his assignment; b) Coaching which encompasses discipline and scheme; and c) Perhaps the talent level is not there, which goes back to draft picks... How do the hated Patriots manage to do it year in and year out (like the Steelers used to...). Just my opinion...

Cowher was on the radio in Pittsburgh yesterday and was asked if coaching has changed with the current NFL, and he said not really, your team needs 3 things from a coach 1. Structure 2. Direction 3. Accountability.

I don't think the Steelers have any of that aside from Ben, Harrison and Heyward

I cannot throw Cockrell under the bus either. The guy plays

Tomlin has thown all of these three things down the drain. If he is not careful he will have this team just as the Bungles. As much as I hate hate saying this look at the coach in NE, all three things stand out.

Would definitely be on board for a NT if we are to continue playing the 3-4

1) UGH-Hell no, he will be franchised or signed long term
2) OK So let JJ walk, no huge shoes to fill there but we probably bring in a bigger salary than he garners which will not get us a comp pick and LT has 10 accrued seasons so he will not get us a comp pick even if someone pays him large.
3) Free agency is not the answer, we will sign our own key free agents and a couple/few mid range free agents...hopefully at least a bit spent on an edge rusher as we will have nada there outside of Dupree returning from injury.
4) I'd draft a ball hawk safety and dump Mitchell, then go DL and TE in 2-3, since we ARE keeping Bell.
5) if they are not we have even more holes and troubles ahead

no way they go TEin 2 or 3 with Green here, I like the idea of a ballhawking FS, but a pass rushing LBer is just as important. SO BPA at those positions. Although I prefer one of them to be filled in FA. This team doesn't have the luxury of building just thru the draft in Ben's golden years. The weaknesses need to be shore up yesterday.
