The Coronavirus thread

Pediatricians don’t want children under middle school age wearing masks. Kids with special needs of any age should not wear masks, and that’s the same for adults with special needs. As for babies not making eye contact- I I have no reason to discount what she said. I’ve also seen that first hand our in public with babies and masks. Just because a baby can’t “focus” doesn’t mean he can’t see and can’t be scared.

I don't really think newborn babies are visually or intellectually capable of being scared by the sight of a facemask. Facemasks are pretty common in hospital settings anyway. No one ever worried about traumatizing babies with them before. Transmitting infectious diseases to babies on the other hand can be deadly.

I agree it is not practical to have all children wear them all day in school, and probably not good developmentally for a number of reasons, not the least of which is speech development. But I doubt seeing other people wearing them sometimes is especially traumatic.

Maybe, but my daughter locked eyes with mine shortly after she was born while I gave her her first bottle.

Yep. My daughter looked me directly in the eyes 2-3 days after she was born, and I don't care what "experts" claim as to when babies first smile, I was talking to her and cooing when she was 1 week old and she smiled like nobody's business.

Ok these are nice stories but have nothing to do with my comment. Newborn babies do look into faces that are very close to their own. Failing to make eye contact with nurses in the maternity ward would not be out of the ordinary. Certainly the idea that they are crying because they're scared of facemasks seems highly unlikely. They have no idea what they're looking at or what things are or are not supposed to look like.

As someone who's spent a whole lot of time with babies in hospitals (2 in NICU for months, one in NICU for weeks and PICU for weeks) and have seen babies handled by plenty of people wearing facemasks, I'm sorry, I just don't buy it.

This is not an accusation, but a ruthless taking stock [of the current situation]. I could slap myself, because I looked at Sars-CoV2- way too long with panic. I am also somewhat annoyed with many of my immunology colleagues who so far have left the discussion about Covid-19 to virologist and epidemiologist. I feel it is time to criticise some of the main and completely wrong public statements about this virus.

Firstly, it was wrong to claim that this virus was novel. Secondly, It was even more wrong to claim that the population would not already have some immunity against this virus. Thirdly, it was the crowning of stupidity to claim that someone could have Covid-19 without any symptoms at all or even to pass the disease along without showing any symptoms whatsoever.

That was a great read. Still a lot unproven but seems eminently reasonable.

That said I still maintain that wearing a piece of cloth over faces does seem to be slowing the spread in a lot of places and there is very little downside to it. But I totally agree that lockdowns for the vast majority of people are way, way overkill.

Took my daughter to Applebee’s tonight. She wanted to go out to eat and mom was working late so I was all about it. Just like my gym, the couple pubs I’ve gone to, empty where normally packed.

The next wave isn’t the virus and lockdown. The next wave has already been created from fear and it will be mass going out of biz. Two months four at most. Not sure if you all are seeing the same but it’s going to be a shame.

I see it. Went to Outback steakhouse a few days ago, and not only them, but the mall it was next to was a ghost town. Someone I know who works there used to be a manager there and when they first cut back from the lockdown, she had to beg them to let her take pick up and delivery orders and not lay her off. She actually moved down to Mexico so she wouldn't go broke. No bullshit.

In fact quite a few people I've talked to lately (especially Marine corps guys) are moving down to Rosarito, B.C. You can get a place on the beach for next to nothing compared to San Diego apparently. Mexico is a dangerous country, but these people seem to swear that they have gated communities and 24/7 security that helps make them feel safe. It's a crazy time and place, never thought it would get here like this.

Saw a picture of Minneapolis just recently, looks like damn Fallujah.

The hubs and I went out tonight. We got back from Oregon yesterday. Went to our local bar- the bartender wore a mask but the customers did not. Earlier in the day, we went to Wally World and half the people there (me included) had their masks off their face while shopping. I’m not sure what point the governor here is making, but it’s failing.

Stuff is shutting down again in westmoreland County, PA for 2 weeks. No bars or in house dining at restaurants. As far as i know stores are staying open

We are leaving for a road trip to GA next week. I feel like I need a spreadsheet to keep track of which states mandate mask wearing and all that other ****. It’s crazy how things differ from state to state- even county to county.

Even if the fear was gone tomorrow it's already too late for a lot of businesses. Now with this new wave of panic I'm guessing at least half will go belly up.

The number of positive cases is going up because the amount of testing has increased 500% over when this started. The mortality rate is plummeting. It's less deadly than the common flu. Only the sheep who believe fake news and the commie politicians are afraid. Hands off of our businesses, *******!

That's what we get when 50% of the population -- well probably 60-70% when you factor in lower functioning or beta males -- cannot grasp simple ratios and percentages when their emotions are telling them something else.

I know some people who went on a trip and came back with the Covid. It was like a bad flu. Recovered. They weren't the healthiest either.

We need to let this thing play out like every other virus/flu. This shutting things down is for the birds. I believe we hurt our immune systems by shutting down. Protect the vulnerable, but let the young and healthy go for it.

I think there is some justification for trying to slow the spread through the least oppressive methods (mask wearing for example). There is no justification for shutting everything down.

This idea that we need to shut down life as we know it until the virus is eradicated or nearly so is ludicrous. The human costs of that would far outstrip the virus.

Least oppressive.....LMAO. Try wearing a mask when it’s 105 outside with 95% humidity. Ain’t happening.

It's hot and humid here too but masks aren't required outdoors unless social distancing of at least 6 feet isn't possible. So I haven't been in that situation and can't foresee when I would be any time soon .

Be thankful!! It’s horrible here and the heat travels into the buildings. I take the mask off as soon as I get inside. It’s awful.

If you pick some girl up at the bar and the two of you go out back to bang, do you have to wear a mask as you are not 6 feet apart? Can someone tweet that to Wolf....thanks

I never wear a ******* mask outdoors. That is ridiculous. You get this **** from sustained close contact.

I don't either. No reason to wear it outside unless packed in like sardines with other people for some reason.

I guess it depends how long your thing is.

I don’t wear mine outdoors either- just long enough to get from my car into the store. But that 2 minute walk is HELL. Once I’m in the store, the mask is OFF and it stays off.
