Tampering grades————-Steelers

I am less excited than most about the acquisition of Pittman. Is he an upgrade over any of the receivers not named Metcalf? Probably. But that's a low bar. He'll help for sure, but I don't see hm being some earth shattering addition. Plus, who is throwing any of them the football? That is a huge question mark and will make a huge difference in how all of this turns out.

Jamel Dean was a great addition but his age is a factor. Dowdle is ok, nothing great. Solid players all, but no real game breakers.

I'd say C+/B-.

That's the thing -- got a bunch of guys in their late 20's, all upgrades which is great, but it's a win now move and we don't have a QB. Also, where do the explosive plays come from in this offense? DK taking a slant to the house?

Tough sledding when you have to rely on grind it out drives all game.

I’d give it a solid B-
We have 2 solid #2 WR’s now. I truly hope we can get that young exciting stud in the first round. And play him instantly. Let’s hope one of the top WR’s fall.
I think I’m the only one……but I think they should have kept Isaac. 10 million was definitely doable.
I would have made a serious play for a young Coby Bryant from Seattle and then more than likely cut or tried to trade Ramsey if he is that safety option.
I’m fine with Rico. They saved 2 million on salary and I think they needed his type of style if our 3rd round pick is a bust. Gainwell was our MVP and a surprise. I wish him well.
We will get hopefully 2-3 solid years from Dean. I like the signing but in no way would it stop me from drafting a top DB if available.
Resigning Cole for that cheap was a no brainer, and bringing back our punter Johnston I agree with. Waitman had a zillion chances to pin punts inside the 10. And just never seemed to get it done. Inconsistent.
Asante was a good move for 4 million dollars. It could be the diamond in the rough.

No matter what the QB carousel keeps on turning and turning and turning…….we can draft all world WR’s sign 30 million dollar a year WR FA contracts blah, blah ,blah. It all means nothing unless we have a young rising QB to Chuck the pigskin. While the jury is still out….I think they made a big mistake not going for Dart in the draft when we had the chance. I watched quite a few games with Simpson. He is not the answer in the draft. After not going after Dart or Darnold last season,Rodgers was the best option. Will it turn out the same by not going for Willis? Say it ain’t so.

Great post Steelmann, appreciate yaz.!!!!

I wanted them to bring in Malick Willis, and he went still within the price range.

I’m tired of the old geriatric roller-coaster this team has been on.

It could be Art 2 pushing the win now agenda because he might be near stepping down.

Art tie would like a SB run before he retires……………..

I wanted them to a team that has a future.

I’m a side note, they are making the team better and better from the trenches outward..

Driving Coolie around.

Like I said, we understand your handicap………………..

Keep in mind that when those little oxygen mask(s) drop from the ceiling, USE them……. Gas is present

You eat the clock and win, keep the D fresh and the opposing O getting cold sitting on a bench

I dont get the age concerns on Dean... he is 29 turning 30, the same age as James Pierre... he should be fine for 1 or 2 seasons the issues come when signing those guys over 32 years old.. like Slay at 33/34 last year

Definitely

He’s been playing great ball and likely about at his peak, if he stays healthy he’s still got a few years in the tank as a good-great corner.

The nfl panelist on this website depend on head size and hand size to gauge a players ability.

How clever. They don't do that at the combine.

You taking over coach's job now that he is no longer participating on this messageboard?

I think he is, now if he can get us 2-1st rounders for Austin3……… that would seal his identity………….

No, but we have player’s success and failure to prove that theory isn’t to bad to bank on……………..

It’s unfortunate. A good joke is lost on some people. Humor is quite subjective. I’m certain the organization will soon see that long sought after seventh Super Bowl. On that note, I bid you all good day.

I don't get the entire "win now" argument with this offseason. The Steelers aren't going to tank and none of these moves have mortgaged the future. If nothing else, they are building a strong enough supporting cast that a young QB could step in and not have to do everything by himself. Plus, we have a dozen picks coming up in the draft to add youth.

What young QB? If you mean Howard this year, fine. If you mean a 2027 draft pick, who will likely sit for a year, then by the time he starts in 2028 all of these guys will be 31 and 32, Cam will be gone, TJ possibly gone or at the end, Ramsey gone, DK will likely be 31, etc.

They're not picking 12 players after filling out the roster the way they did in free agency. Never said anything about tanking, but if you're building a roster for your next franchise QB, this isn't the way.

This is all for Rodgers I fear.

The way I look at it during the free agency periods every season is, did we add more value added personnel as compared to what we have lost, during free agency to this point.

Based on that type of analysis, I would be confident in saying that we are a better football team today than we were before free agency started.

You’re absolutely correct. It’s tough to grind it out and score points quickly and consistently in the NFL.

But I believe you’re totally disregarding the signing of Rico Dowdell…
He probably will become our greatest home run threat on offense this season.. and most importantly,a legit one.

There have been zero “win now” moves thus far in free agency imho and the prepping for the future “win down the road” foundational roster moves will come in the draft. The “win now” (“winning” being defined as at least 9 of them) will be when the dinosaur returns.

This free agency period has been more of the exact same mentality we’ve seen under Art for years…it’s a “don’t suck out loud” mentality. He doesn’t need his Steelers to be SB contenders, just enough so that die hard fans stay consumers.

That threshold in his perception appears to be mediocrity.

So far…
QB is worse (will be about the same when Aaron returns).
RB is about the same, maybe slightly better. The position got less versatile as the backs are pretty similar in many ways.
FB got worse, although baby Heyward was jag and very replaceable. Maybe McCarthy brings in a true blocker later to improve our short yardage? Not sure if he’s a FB guy or not.
WR is definitely improved at the starters and depth will surely come through a pick or two
TE is better with addition by subtraction of Jonnu and having an offensive minded coach that will use Muth more than 10-20 snaps a game (if he’s on the roster).
The OL is worse- LT and LG are big questions with no starter at either spot. (Could’ve had Walker for 10 million) I definitely would’ve offered 2/25 or 3/35 range to get that deal done.

The DL is the same, almost exactly except Scam is firmly one foot in the grave at this point. When does he fall off the cliff?
LB is pretty much the same
Secondary has been improved a bit.

The roster may be ever so slightly better if you are looking at this exact moment (except for the most important position) frankly I actually expected better with the amount of cap room available. I’d count Dowdle for Gainwell as a wash…Pittman was the only really nice add on offense and Dean on defense but we lost a starting OL (and QB). Have to figure there is a back room deal in place with Rodgers, there is no reason for ownership to let the fans know he is resigning.

So I guess when ya look at it with an objective eye give them a C as they really Steelered it up moving the deck chairs on the Titanic once again.

Until they figure out the most important position in the game C stands for Ceiling…damn how can an entire front office be that dense, or is the goal to recreate the 80s?

They aren't going to help the Steelers win now for the reasons you stated, which is why it's puzzling that they're making some of these moves. If KC or Buffalo added Pittman, Dean, and Dowdle, it would make more sense because they're ready to win now with a couple moves. The Steelers are not except in their delusional minds.

Steeler ought to be moving on from Cam, TJ, Ramsey and getting younger, acquiring more draft capital for next year, and feathering the nest for the next franchise QB.

A first-round QB in 2027 doesn't have to sit a year. That shouldn't be the assumption.

Right about the draft picks. Maneuver around the draft to get better prospects and trade for future picks.

What does your offseason look like to build for a new QB?

Get rid of older guys who aren't part of the future for picks and/or cap space. Instead of paying another WR who will be 29 and isn't a game breaker $20M per, draft one. Finish the OL. Get his Bettis or Bell in the draft.

Probably take two offseasons, which is why I draft him next year and sit him a year.

Would have been better to start this plan in 24 or 25 after Kenny left. We're just treading water from year to year with no apparent plan.

it takess two to tango, probably everybody and theri grandma knows next year's picks are more valuable than this year's for the simple fact that the QB class is lacking, also the WR and CB is nothing special. I doubt anyone is throwing picks away to get our vets

agree but there's no time machine.

Soooooo. If they go 9-7 this year is it a Mccarthyship? Or will it still be a Tomlinship in honor of the greatest 9-7 coach thier has ever been?
